If you don't have the time to navigate the local weekend fish and vegetable markets, this is an excellent excursion. Easy to reach (Cal y Canto metro stop or an inexpensive cab ride), Mercado Central is a haven of fresh fish, seafood, and restaurants for tourists and locals. It's worth a walk-through before buying, but wear clothing and shoes that you don't mind smelling "fishy" - this is a crowded, somewhat smelly market. A huge selection of fish and seafood is available; if you have an available kitchen, try the pulpo (octopus - it's excellent), corvina, salmon or scallops. Take time to talk with the vendors: ask what's fresh, what they recommend. By gringo standards, it does not look like the cleanest place, but I've bought plenty of seafood and eaten at different restaurants there and I've never had a problem.
