“Old school Charm with modern day convenience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

We have ended up staying 3 nights after originally planning only 1. As other reviewers have said, the building is an old school and with the wooden floors and walls the noise does travel a little. No more than many other hostels and the fact it is so large it isn't that big a problem anyway. With a 200m walk into the middle of town, it is in a perfect position to explore Puerto varas or catch a bus into montt. Haven't had any issues with the cold as the fire is always burning. Get a glass of vino and kick back

We spent there one night my husband and I. The owner is supposed to be French but we found that the French touch is nowhere. The hostel is cold (not only the rooms, also the atmosphere) and noisy. Thin wooded walls everywhere and lack of intimacy. There were two bathrooms (not enough) and at least mine dirty.
Suitable only for young American nerds. Go elsewhere.

We loved, loved, loved this hostel, never wanted to leave! The location is great, a couple of blocks from town, the double private room was lovely, big with a comfortable bed, the bathroom etc was always really clean, the kitchen is big and well equipped, the atmosphere is very homely with a cosy lounge/dining area and a fire as well as an endless supply of tea and coffee.... but the best part about this hotel is the owner and his girlfriend - they were so friendly and really make you feel at home. They don't have a breakfast option but that's no problem for us.

The hostel is in a lovely old house but as already mentioned this means any noise carries. The is a family with extremely noisy toddler living on the first floor so forget any ideas of having a siesta as the child,s screeching and stomping about will make it impossible. Things do improve once its finally gone to bed. Kitchen is cramped as there isnt enough cooking space and only two easy chairs in the communal area. Staff can border on the sullen and could do with learning the definition of hospitality. It's a lovely building but best suited to those out all day or who are deaf or like their stay accompanied by the sound of children. If you're not one of these I'd suggest you stay elsewhere

I’m not convinced about Margouya. On paper, it’s a perfectly reasonable place to stay – it just lacks a little athmosphere.
The building itself is an old school, and it doesn’t look like much has been done to it since then. This is actually quite nice, as you can see all the original features. The disadvantage is that everything creaks. If someone goes up or down the stairs, the creaking can be heard throughout the building.
The room was clean and secure. As well as a bed, we had a shelving unit, a desk and a chair – it was nice to be able to spread our stuff out for a change. The room also came with an electric heater (very useful on the day that we arrived!)
The bathroom on the lower floor was cleaned regularly, and there was never a queue to use it (though from speaking to others, this was not the case with the upstairs bathroom). The hot water was good enough for a long shower.
The kitchen was well equipped with two ovens and six gas hobs (though one of the ovens was a 1900’s original and we didn’t dare touch it). There were plenty of spices etc for cooking that were available for all to use.
Apart from the kitchen, the other common area was a dining room and tv area. This had a very large selection of DVDs, but only two armchairs. If more than two people want to watch, then you are forced to sit at the dining room table, which is not too comfortable.
Wifi was fast, did not cut out and was available throughout the building. There was also one computer that was available free of charge.
The hostel rents bikes for CL$6000, which is good for a quick trip along the shore of the lake.
There is a laundry service, but at CL$9,000 (US$18) to wash and dry your clothes, we decided that the laundry could wait until the next destination.

Anything you could want would be in this kitchen. Free spices, tuppaware, plastic bags, juicer, blender. Allsorts. The beds were comfy. The workers JP and frenchie were a great laugh and told us so much information. The breakfast was great and the rooms included lockers. All in all, great place, would highly recommend. Great social environment in the middle of all the rooms, breakfast and evening food forced everyone to have a chat. It was great. Met some great friends.

Thanks guys!

This place was really nice, good kitchen, nice common room, decent bikes for rent. The owner/manager and his family are great. Decent showers and nice neighbourhood.

We would go again!
