“Faded glory in a superb location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

As many others have stated here, the Gran Hotel is in an absolutely fabulous location, with views of Volcan Villaricca to one side, the lake on the other (and mountain views for rooms on the sides) - but the rooms themselves are not as well apportioned as you'd expect for a hotel in this class/price range. Internet is terrific when it works - but seems plagued by outages (during the week I spent here, the internet was completely down for 2-3 days). The room I had was fine - though as others have noted, paint was peeling in the bathroom, there was a notable lack of plugs for charging laptops etc. - and noise (toilets flushing, doors shutting, furniture moving etc.) easily traveled through the walls from neighboring rooms and hallway.
On the plus side, breakfasts are fine - buffet style in the dining room overlooking the pool/lake - mostly continental fare, with fresh fruit, yogurt, juices, fairly decent coffee and even some eggs/sausage options. As the hotel is right on the shores of the lake, the pool and grounds are very pleasant. Finally, the hotel is about 3-4 blocks away from the main part of town - so at night especially it is quieter than some of the hotels/hostels in the center of town (which can be quite noisy, according to some colleagues who spent the week there).

Nice location, but that's about it. The hotel is old and in an extremely poor state. The staff was not very friendly, a lot of them didn't speak any English at all. The rooms haven't been updated nor maintained in ages. The room safe didn't work, there was no sound isolation and no air conditioning. The bathroom was in a very poor state with horrible plumbing. I actually had water in the bathroom walls, which was contained only by the paint on the walls and the ceiling. The water pipes made a horrible noise, and when taking a shower, the water ended up all over the bathroom floor, probably due to a leak in the drainpipes. The food was, well... eatable. My advice: avoid this hotel at all costs, this hotel is an insult to hotels all over the world.

Room Tip: If you want a good room, find another hotel

This clearly was once very grand, but is in need of some aesthetic help, such as paint outside. However, this isn't reflected inside. The rooms were comfy and clean, and the breakfast very extensive and nice in a beautiful dining room. The pool is great, and the black sand beach -- with mountains in the background -- is very nice. I think this is the only hotel right on the lake. They seem to be still on the rebound. For example, the beach bar only offered one type of beer, and it wasn't cold. The pool snack bar and fitness center seemed better organized and equipped. Great location, just a block away from town. I think they have good kids activities, but it wasn't apparent how to take advantage of these. I think it may have been childcare for smaller kids, so it wasn't offered to us (mine are 9 and 11). FYI, this looks the opposite direction from the volcano. If you want volcano view, better to stay in neighbor Villarica -- however, Pucon is a nicer town for strolling around.

The Gran Hotel Pucon is awesomely located on Lake Villarica in Pucon but it is "tired". The hotel was grand in its day but has not been updated or even maintained at a reasonable level. Before coming here, we stayed at the Antumalal hotel just 10 minutes away - it was SPECTACULAR and about the same price. I don't recommend the Gran Hotel - its not gran anymore.

We lived in southern Chile for 2 years and spent a weekend at this hotel in 2006 (not in 2011 as it says below- I had to choose a date to process this review and 2006 wasn't an option). It is grand in the old fashioned sense of the word...large old building with a hint of old fashioned charm, but not elegant or well kept up. I would not stay here again...one could do better in the area. The lake view is very nice I will admit...beautiful views. Breakfast was also nice in the large restaurant with many others...many others around you, but in a fun old-fashioned kind of way.

It was not a dirty hotel...just outdated and worn out a bit.

The location is spectacular, the reality of the hotel is the opposite. The first thing you noticed once you are in the hotel is the facade looks a bit rundown, the second thing is the spectacular view to the Lake. Unfortunately besides the breakfast that was pretty good, there are not good things to say about the hotel. The staff needs a lot of training, Cristobal was at the reception when we arrived, after waiting 15 minutes, we were asked for passports, without greeting or talking us at all we were checked in. When we wanted to have lunch, we realized that as Cristobal never asked for a credit card, we didn't have " credit" at the hotel, so we needed to pay every thing on the spot (not charges to the room allow) When I asked in native chilean spanish, why he said he didn't realize I speak spanish, even though he took a copy of my Chilean passport, so his option was just not to provide information. On Tuesday morning there was a leak in the ceiling at 4th floor, by Thursday there was a huge hole and besides a plastic container to receive the water there was not attempt to cover it. No wireless connection in our room and the whole hotel needs a big investment in painting, cleaning, change wallpaper and carpets as everywhere you look there is a stain. you don't want to sit in the white sofa at the reception area!

Room Tip: If you really want to stay here, ask for a room facing the lake

The lake view was great. The room was big enogh clean and nice. Comfortable bad that you can watch the view from. Though it looks that they can't spend much managing the building it looks nice. Breakfast was very good. We would come again gladly.
