“Over price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

Chicken wings is nice, rice and chilies below average. Few car parking lots better than main branch. But would recommend to eat at main branch as the food is 2 stars better than Kotong branch.

“It's just not up to standard”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

If you've had good original Malay Nasi Lemak, you won't like this. The chilli is sweet. There are no curries or sambal to choose from. Don't go expecting Malay-style nasi lemak.

I tried the Serangoon branch years ago and was very disappointed. Had it again recently and I know why I never ate it for years. The rice was acceptable, no big deal. No extra points here.

The ikan bilis was nicely crispy but was so sweet. These are the small type. It should be salty. The sweet style should've been reserved for the bigger ikan bilis. Minus point.

Fried chicken wing. Looks crispy and it was but tasted very bland. Definitely not marinated. Minus point.

Chili paste. Looks great but was again too sweet. A child could eat this without tearing. What a letdown. Minus point

Otak and peanuts were ok. But where were the eggs?

Price was steep compared to normal nasi lemak. There's a $2.30 Nasi Lemak set at the market round the corner wher the chili, ikan bilis and the fish fillet is good.

Nope, my party won't be having it again for years to come.

“Consistently Good, Very Clean for a Coffee Shop”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

Have eaten at this place many times, and I cannot remember any occasion when there wasn't a queue. Rice is flavorful and cooked just right, the chilli sauce was just right (not too sweet), and the ikanbilis was nice and crispy.

Wish they would have fried chicken thighs or drumsticks (not just wings) and nicer archar.

Overall, I would go back repeatedly.

“The Original and Authentic Punggol Nasi Lemak”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

First, this shop on Tanjong Katong Rd is the current outlet of the original and authentic Punggol Nasi Lemak. There is one other branch on Serangoon Rd. All other shops calling themselves Punggol Nasi Lemak are not affiliated with the original and authentic shop on Tanjong Katong Rd and are copy-cats.

If you are a fan of Nasi Lemak, or just want to try, then Punggol Nasi Lemak stand is the place to go. There is always a line of locals, which provides some assurance of the quality of this popular dish at this shop.

Punggol's point of difference from other nasi lemak stands is the flavor of its chili and the ala carte method of ordering condiments. The chili is spooned out from a counter top pot directly on to the service tray. Condiments are ordered from a glass case and include the usual fried egg, fried chicken and ikan billis. Punggol also overs premium condiments such as fried shrimp and my favorite chile shrimp crumble that bursts with umami.

Tables are all al fresco. Soft drinks are purchased separately from a small counter in the rear.

Punggol gets some deserved criticism from Singaporeans for being more expensive than most any other nasi lemak. The more condiments ordered, the higher the price, so a plate can add up to S$7-8 versus the typical nasi lemak of about S$3.

If you want to experience perhaps the best nasi lemak in Singapore, then make the trek to Tanjong Katong Rd. Its well worth the visit. Beware the fakes!!

“Not just nasi lemak”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

This is a self service restaurant and it has many branches throughout Singapore. It is not just about nasi lemak, but many delicious dishes as well, including nasi briyani (although the taste is not as outstanding as other restaurant that I have reviewed). It is not really value for money but have varieties that you can choose. In Kuala Lumpur you may say that this can be nasi kandar!
I like the food, its spicy but the people behind the counter at times working like robots. Not as friendly as you would have expected.
