“Expensive for a budget hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2012

First trip to Singapore and this hotel was recommended by a friend who lives in Singapore. When we arrived we were able to check in strate away which was lucky as we arrived around 10 am. The room was very small and so was the bathroom but you get used to the bathroom after a while and the shower was actually very powerful. Received free bottled water everyday and toiletries which was nice. There is also complimentary tea and coffee with a kettle but no fridge or milk. That is all the hotel has to offer and there are no other facilities on site. There is free wifi but its not particularly fast. The bed is extremely uncomfortable but again once you slept on it a few days you just get used to it. A lot of reviews have said about the noise and seeing prostitutes in the hotel, we didnt have a problem with either of these. The reception staff are not particularly friendly and luckily we had no problems with anything so only spoken to them on check in and check out. The hotel is in a great location and within walking distance of a lot of attractions, failing that there is a bus stop only 2 minutes walk and train stations about 5 minutes walk that can take you where ever you want. There are plenty of shopping centres around with plenty of restaurants. Make sure you pick up a map at the airport. Raffles is nearby and try and do a trip to the night safari, china town, marina bay, little india, orchard road and universal studios at sentosa island. Things can be cheap or expensive depending on your budget. There is a free water/light show at the marina bay which is well worth going to of an evening. They dont offer airport transfers but taxis are pretty cheap and when you arrive there is a cheap shuttle bus (just go to the transport desk) There are lots of "Hotel 81" hotels in the area so make sure you say its the one near Shaw tower in Bugis. Location wise this hotel is excellent but it is certainly not worth the price you pay. I think there are probably more value for money hotels than this chain. Having said that, due to the location i would probably stay again.

That was my first trip at Singapore so Im observed the city hotel via internet which accorded with my budged, so I prefer to stayed at 81-Bugis Hotel because that hotel located strategic and near from eveywhere. I stayed for 3 night, Its about $138/night (*I thought it was publish rate so I recommend you to book hotels before “H” day via agent) which fasilities LCD TV with bored channels (almost of channels such chineses drama), bed, AC, bath room, water heater and non included breakfast. There’s no window in my room, super duper smallest room & bath room (well.. what I could expect with minimalis budged, right?!) dont expect too much you can enjoy your shower time peoples! The bus station located in front of hotels and you can take taxy easily outside hotels and it take about 10 minutes by foot goes to Bugis MRT Station, you can find many markets around like Bugis Junction, Bugis Streets or Singapore National Library and many more. I aint recommended you to stay at this hotel because the receptionist wasnt helpful so if you wanna ask something they will give their straight face and unhelpful answers. The most selling point from 81-Bugis is this hotel located in Bugis Area. I would prefer to another hotels when I come back to Singapore

Room Tip: ask them for the room which have a windows

it is a budget hotel so we were not expecting much.. we only need a place to stay at night anyways since we were out for most part of our stay in singapore. it was small but clean. the beds and pillows were ok. the hallways were a bit narrow but was not a problem since there weren't much occupants during our stay. it was hard to understand the staff (language barrier?) but they seemed to be helpful. we were also allowed to leave our things in the lobby after 12noon check out while we continue to roam around the city, since our flight is on midnight. location was great though ;)

Location: great. Bus and subway nearby, shops, touristic areas.

Rooms: very very small, and smell humidity a lot. When you shower, the entire bathroom floods, and despite the use of A/C, the room smells humidity. Conclusion: bad.

Service: minimum. No smile, no help to get directions. 2 minutes after check-out, I asked to use the Wifi for 5 minutes... they refused as I had already checked-out... 2 minutes before !

Overall: location is ok, but hotel is definitely old, smells bad, and is not clean. I would not go there again.

My usual Hotel was fully booked so I chose this particular hotel simply for its location.

The hotel is five minutes from Bugis MRT and a few minutes from Suntec City.

The tiny reception cannot cope at times and I found myself in a queue out to the street when I arrived. The receptionists with the exception of one gentlemen were monosylabic and really didn't want to talk other than amongst themselves.

The room was clean, I had a room with a window so that helped. I can imagine the ones without having a tomb effect. There was a large bathroom and everything worked.

I'm not sure I would stay here again as the price whilst understandable for the location is simply too high.

In a very expensive city, this is one of the cheap hotels - reasonable and comfortable. I stayed here almost a week in June and July with a friend. We were not expecting too much (since it's been said that it is somewhat the cheap motel type) but it's quite reasonable compared to staying in a backpacker's hostel, where you have to share a room and bathroom with the rest of the guests. The room is quite small yet the bed fits just right. The room has a tv, a small closet, a water boiler, some stash of coffee, tea and bottled water. I just don't like the mirrors all over one wall. It might be there to make the space look bigger (but i dare not think of what purpose it serves for others). Same goes for the little toilet and bath, small but decent enough since they have enough soap, towels and toiletries. They have free wi-fi access and complimentary breakfast. The room may not be superb, but the location is EXCELLENT! I love it that everything seems to be just within walking distance - the malls, money changers, convenience stores (7-eleven is just beside it), bugis street and the different museums. There's also a nice coffee shop a few steps away from the hotel which serves really good food for 5 sgd. yum!

Room Tip: If you're going to any Hotel 81 location, I guess Bugis is the best choice.
