“Interesting area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

I hadn't been to this area for 3 years so finding my way from Paya Lebar MRT station was a challenge. A lot has changed around the station area. Had a nice stroll down Joo Chiat Road and popped into some shops along the way. Had a meal in 112 Katong Mall, it has a great Foodcourt on the top floor.

“Old Singapore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

If you want to see some old Singapore houses head to this district. Easily accessible via green or yellow line of MRT you can walk around and find many interesting places like Joo Chiat Road, Koon Seng Road which has some of the most beautiful old houses I have seen in Singapore. There is also the Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple and heaps of eateries around the district. Worth a visit.

“Old quaint area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

Lots of little bars and eateries...a few dancing spots..we liked Chevy's..hope I remembered the name correctly. Here they play good live music..rock and pop..for a more mature crowd.very small place though.

“Nostalgic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

Somehow one feel's transported back in time in katong. From the layout of this surburb to the many local favorites such as the infamous katong laksa, and fei fei wanton mee.

“A Heritage Area Outside the City Center”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

Katong is one of these suburbs outside the city center that give you the sense of an older, less glitzy Singapore. I often hear people complain that Singapore is like Dubai or Las Vegas but people often forget the long history the city has. Katong is one of those areas where a lot of Peranakan Chinese had their businesses and as a result it is one of the few areas left with original shophouses. Increasingly people are having these refurbished, fresh coat of paint, giving the whole area an extra dimension. It is lovely to wander around here, discovering architectural gems as well as incredible food places. East Coast Road is known as Food Paradise, a large concentration of excellent mostly low-end eating places. Of course it is one of the best places to sample Peranakan food. It is also one of the few neighborhoods with rather easy access to the beach. All in all it makes an excellent day or afternoon out of the city center, wandering around, eating, having a chilled beer and enjoying the relative quiet of an old area with lots of heritage and character.
