“lovely little place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2009

I stayed here for two nights with my boyfriend in a double room which was actually in a dorm but sectioned off from the bunks. it suited us down to the ground, as it gave us some privacy on a budget. we had a lovely big window behind our bed where we could sit and look out at life on the street below. this hostel is situated near little india. it is a lovely area with lots of great little restaurants and intersting shops. it is close to the train/ underground (i can't remember which) but you can walk into the heart of the city. this walk will take you about 15 minutes and you can pass by the famous raffles hotel on your way.

for breakfast we were given two slices of toast with a choice of spreads and a selection of fresh fruit - a perfect light bite to start the day. staff here are friendly and helpful. although we filled our two days with activities, we saw many guests chilling out inside and outside the hostel. it is a very homely place. there was free internet which any backpacker would appreciate.

if i am in singapore again i will definitely stay here!

As a previous comment already stated, the staff reception @ Sleepy Sam can be a nightmare. We walked in to ask whether they would have vacancie for the following day and whether it was possible to see the room. NO WAY to see the room! The staff told me, whether I would like to have all the time having people walking in my bedroom... and then I asked, how many people do share the bathroom, just to get an idea of the place, the woman asked me, whether that was the first time we would stay in a hostel, and all that in a quit agressiv unfriendly way!!! well, as we sort of liked the place from the outside, we decided to book anyway for 2 nights. But the lady wanted money right away, for both nights, and she told us about 10 times, if we did not like the place, there wont be money back!!! So then on the next day when we arrived (at least the new staff was much nicer) we found out that the room is pretty much a huge rip off: 89 SD for just approx. 5 m2, and the joke is, that paying all that money you dont get any privacy, as the room is on the edge of the dorm-room (through which you have to walk to get into you room, or to go to toilet). You get all the noise from the dorm, so at the end, we really asked ourself, why we paid 89 SD and not 2 x 25 SD for just 2 dorm beds, as we did not get any more comfort, beside a thin wooden door and a window . So then we changed to another hotel, where we paid 89 SD as well, with ensuite bathroom, room service etc.
Conclusion: Dont even consider to stay there in a double (dorm seems quit ok), and please dear Sleepy Sam, improve the friendliness of one of your female staff member and please be honest and let people see the room before they pay. This is a very normal practise all over the world, and even everywhere else in Spor!!!! Tx.

We arrived after 12 hours of overnight travelling to find a rude staff member who insisted that we should pay 400 Dollars before we were allowed to even see our room. Needless to say this sort of behaviour should not be tolerated and we left and found nice rooms at the YMCA. I can not recommend booking this hostel.

It's a great place, clean, good services and in a convenient location.
The breakfast was lovely, you can wake at anytime and it's still on.
Staff are great and friendly.
The showers are good.
Free internet access was fantastic, however at times the computers were experiencing problems and one could not use them.
Sleep Sams is the kind of place where you can just chill out the front and watch people go by (your not near a busy, dusty noisy street), read a book or have a nanna nap.

Go there and stay there for a few days if your staying in Singers.

I'd definitely go back.

Regards,

David Wilkinson

Nice place to stay for young people. We didn’t find no bugs at all as mentioned in other comments in this site. The hostel was clean and confortable in a very good position next to the metro station (8 min) Nice breakfast and internet –use for free

Staying in my first ever hostel at the age of 38, i might have been worried at some of the previous reviews. Not a bit of it. A great place to stay on one of Singapores most colourful streets. Accomodation was basic but clean, although the staff were not extroverts they were polite and helpful, (chucking a smile their way from time to time doesn't hurt).
It was a good base to explore Singapore, with Bugis MRT station close buy and the centre of China town only a 30 minutes walk.
People staying ranged from late teens to old duffers like me, with most in their twenties.
Breakfast was good and 24 hour convenience store across the street was a saviour supplying the first beer of the day after exploring the city.
The outside of the hostel is fairly social and a good place to hook up with people for trips out, as for inside, well if like watching family guy on a continuous loop or spending your life on the internet, that will be the place for you!
