We recently stayed in this hotel for 6 days and loved it.
The hotel is brand new (opened in May 2013) and some aspects - such as a bar, restaurant and convenience store - are being finalised.
Beds were super comfortable (brand new!), with super soft pillows and high quality linen.
For us, it was important that the room was clean, secure and that it had comfortable beds (not the ones wrapped in plastic covers found in Hotel 81 or some other Geylang hotels - as described by other travellers on here). The linen was clean and changed daily. On one of the days, we asked the housekeeping lady not to do our rooms - she said that "it's our duty to keep your rooms clean and provide service. you just go, enjoy Singapore and leave the rooms to me." When we came back, the room was cleaned and we got fresh towels in the bathroom.
Bathroom featured a rain shower which was fantastic after a busy day. It came with a selection of toiletries, including free bath gel, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste - just to name some. Yes, the sink was a bit small but it did the job. We didn't feel the need to lay out all the makeup and toiletries - as always, we keep them in our toiletry bags. We put some stuff on shelves below the sink.
Rooms although narrow - a little bit wider than our KING size bed - had plenty of room for luggage (two big suitcases and two carry on pulls) – were designed in such a way to maximise space use while featuring modern, sleek design. I loved the fact that I could control everything from the wireless pad - from lighting, TV and access to the internet. Great air-condition with controls for fan speed, temperature and a timer.
Reception staff were very helpful and attended to all our queries promptly. In fact, I have named a number of them in the survey which we filled out when checking out of the hotel - they were fantastic. One of the best parts was the Chief Concierge - Radzwan (I'm sure I spelled his name incorrectly - apologies) but he was fantastic! He knew everything, he had all the connections and could get us tickets for anything without the need for us to queue up. We got better deals through him than we would online. We planned a one-day trip to Indonesia (Batam or Bintan Islands) and he advised on the best tours and deals for us to do that. He knew every bus route in town and his advice was welcome and appreciated. We got a cheaper deal on our maxi-cab transport to the airport and check in and check out were smooth.
We liked that the hotel was centrally located, two blocks from Bugis Junction and 10-15 minute walk from the Raffles precinct. There was a bus station across the road from the hotel and a train station block away.
On each level, there were water coolers/filters and you could buy additional drinks from the vending machines. Reception featured a massive couch (wish I could transport one back home!), good selection of reading books and TV. As I said, the hotel is being finalised so for what we needed and wanted out of a hotel on this occasion, we got. In fact, with an excellent service, we got more than expected.
I can only offer you one bit of advice: it all depends what you are looking in a hotel. If you want a 5+ star treatment, the Intercontinental is just down the road - feel free to book there. If you want a clean, comfortable, friendly and centrally located hotel which offers value for money - we recommend the Big Hotel.
Many thanks for all the staff who made our stay a pleasant one!
