“clean bed and close to chinatown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

I booked the 16-bed dorm and traveled with dad and brother. Even it was a family trip but we carried backpack, just want to safe everything against a developed city

the bunk bed, blanket and toilet are clean. I stayed at the 2nd floor ,there are 2 toilets and 2 shower rooms but nothing is a problem, first time of mine to stay with much people like 16 bed dorm room. I never met people at the same time while I need shower room to take a bath ( I came back from visit outside about 11pm-midnight

they have oven, fridge, milk tea, coffee and some crackers for breakfast and it's self-service. moreover there is a hot-cold water available 24 hrs and the washing machine with cloths dryer, very convenient for someone who need to watch their clothes.

For the location, right now there is a construction at the Smith street( where the hotel located) in front of the hotel. At first saw, I'm afraid that it would be a problem but it's not we travel at daytime and they construct at the daytime too

just 5 minutes walk from Chinatown Subway

the hotel is close to Buddha tooth relics temple,

After I came back from Universal Studios, we decided to take the bus at Bus interchange( you can find the way from the sign at the Waterfront Subway )
take the bus no. 80 to Chinatown costs only SGD1.3 , to avoid crowded people who get off from Universal Studios the same time as you and you will not be tired to walk as a long distance to change the MRT line as well

It's simply not good. Check in was okay and hassle-free but then: no fresh linen! They didn't give me any for the bed. So I had to sleep in the used one! Only two showers and two toilets for around 20 people on the main floor. Uuuuh! Didn't look very clean. And it's not that cheap! My recommendation: do yourself a favor. Stay somewhere else!

Arrived quite late, with a detailed letter and instructions left for me at the front desk. Very clean! Nice location, and helpful staff. The hostel was quite quiet, and there wasn't really a big communal area, but it was ideal for me at that stage of my trip.

first time in dorm and it's quite good, affordable price, great location and helpful staff, definitely come back next time

f you arrive before check-in time, just leave your luggage there and go round, they keep it for you

and dont sleep near AC, it's really cool

There's a great hostel and there's a bad hostel. Royal hostel falls in between.
The place is superb, it's in chinatown and very close to the culinary and shopping centers. Walking distance to great places in singapore.
The downside are the numbers of bathroom & toilets (2 each) that accomodate the numbers of people in one floor (there are 2 floors in the hostel), the cleanliness of the bathrooms needed to be cleaned more thoroughly and the because I stayed in a room with no windows you have to be careful with the smell that lingers around .
But other than that, the hostel nice with its decoration and Helen at the reception that helps us .
I suggest for female travellers to order a female dorm

Room Tip: Order the dorm with windows and female dorm for female travellers

Location is excellent, couldn't be better. The cute girl on reception is also very friendly and helpful. The bedding is spotless.
Unfortunately, here's the bad points:
The dorm room has 18 beds not 16 as listed on hostel bookers. There are many people who live and work in Singapore or the hostel and stay in the dormitories. The bathroom is adequate but not clean at all. It is full of left over toothbrushes and half soaps not to mention peoples left over hairs that despite the live in cleaner, didn't move for four days whilst we were there. Our last night when we returned from the grand Prix at around 2 am, we were confronted by people not only scattered on the dormitory floor but one person had decided to help themselves to our pillow and duvets and use them as a mattress. The guy in the bed next to ours came home a little later to find someone was slept in his bed. It seems that although there is a key fob to get in, the owners are quite happy for people to sleep on the floor.
A little dissapointed as like I say, the location is perfect and the WiFi is fast. Change the cleaner, get rid of the longtermers and don't let in the waifs and strays, only then will this place be better. Shame

The best place to stay in the heart of Chinatown. Good location, very clean. Will come back for sure. Helen, the receptionist is very helpful. For Indonesian, you can stay here, feel like home because Helen is Indonesian. So, no miss understanding if you can only speak basic English. Enak banget deh tinggal di sini!
