“Fantastic Teppan-Yaki at Teru”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

I had a great evening with my parents in the capable hands of Chef Rocky. Granted, prices are not cheap, but in return you will get the best teppan-yaki in town. This is not a 'traditional' teppan-yaki, but the chef adapted the techniques and sauces using his years of experience in Europe, the Middle-East and Asia. The result is truly great.

We went for a slight adaptation of the cheapest menu (SGD 80 per person) and added goose-liver and lamb rack and sake. The menu itself came with salmon, king prawn and beef. One can also order a-la-carte. Garlic chips, fried rice, vegetables, tea, desert came with the menu. Chef Rocky delivered the goods, everything was cooked to perfection and tasted fantastic. Chef Rocky also is a great entertainer and story-teller.

Comment from my parents (this was on their last evening in Singapore, after a 10-day stay in Singapore and Penang, with visits to a lot of great food places): "this is the best food we had on our trip".

The teppan-yaki is separated from the rest of the restaurant (which is a relatively large sushi restaurant) and has only place for 6-7 people. Reservation is recommended, but of course, you can also sit in the main restaurant. You will miss out on the stories by Chef Rocky however.

“Needs improvement”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

Service was in a mess and sushi/sashimi were way too expensive....could get the same quality, if not better, at Tampopo....atmosphere was do noisy with people drinking and making a scene...and it seems that the female supervisor was not doing anything abt it at all.....highly not recommended to try....

“Kaiseki at modest prices!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

"Kaiseki" conjures up visions of haute Japanese cuisine at extravagant prices. Not at Teru Sushi where chef Ian cooks up a storm at modest prices, even at dinner time.
The one time disciple of Master Chef Nogawa in Singapore, Ian presides over a new restaurant in Link Hotel over at chic Tiong Bahru.
Not really fancy in decor, it still boasts a sushi bar, tables, and tatami rooms with attentive staff, some of whom are students at Singapore's numerous Polytechnics.
The sushi is fresh, chewy when it should be, oily as Salmon ought to be, and the Saba (mackerel) is pan fried, crispy enough and not dry. The sake list is small but still satisfactory.
My curiosity over this relatively new Japanese restaurant is satisfied. I will return for value and to satisfy my taste buds.

“Has potential but not quite ready for prime time”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

My wife and I looked for an alternative to the mostly Chinese restaurants in the Tiong Bahru area of Singapore and found Teru Sushi. This restaurant is located on the ground floor next to the Link Hotel. It looked new and modern and had many customers the night we went. The waitress that seated us was friendly and the atmosphere of the restaurant inviting. Then things went downhill. We each ordered the black cod, a sushi dish, rice, and miso soup. We were each brought a small plate of black cod. We waited for our rice and soup but nothing came. They had forgotten about the rice and soup and one of the sushi dishes. During our wait, a different waitress brought us a dish of sushi that we did not order. We weren't the only customers waiting and having wrong dishes brought to their table. We noticed that the young waitresses looked confused and brought plates of sushi to the wrong table. The only calm workers were the sushi chefs who seemed to run the show because they kept barking out orders to the younger waitresses. Price-wise, Teru Sushi is a bit expensive. The portions are small. When you order a main dish, there is an additional charge of 4 SGD for rice and miso soup. Taste-wise, what we ordered was just average compared to other Japanese restaurants we frequent at home in California.
