The staff at the Venue are polite, smiley and try to be helpful, the room rate is reasonable by S'pore standards, and the area has lots of local colour and little eateries. Unfortunately that doesn't compensate for our 2 sleepless nights there mid-June due to the incessant racket from traffic & people in Joo Chiat Rd and loud music from bars on that road.
Choosing a room in this hotel means a compromise between space and noise: The standard "superior" rooms at the back are quieter but minuscule, practically windowless and claustrophobic; the "deluxe" ones at the front are not as tiny but noisy as hell since they're next to the road.
We were in a deluxe (room 220) fronting the road that had windows with wooden shutters BUT they could not be opened because they were encased in a plexiglass screen that was nailed down. So there's no natural light in the room. There's no double glazing so we could hear constant traffic noise, people talking on the sidewalk below and karaoke music long into the night. Unless you're zonked out from alcohol imbibed at one of the many bars on the road, there's no way you can fall asleep.
On the plus side, the wi-fi works. Aircon, hairdryer, kettle & safety deposit box work. Water pressure is ok. Basic toiletries, instant coffee & teabags are included. Towels are a decent size. However, the shower cubicle has a door but no sunken floor so the water spills out into the rest of the bathroom. The hotel's configuration--a warren of small, mostly windowless, rooms done in garish colours--seems more suited to hourly rental by couples who wouldn't be bothered by noise and lack of natural light! i.e. a "love hotel".
I booked the Venue to be near friends living in the area and it's heritage shophouse character made it more attractive than a nondescript chain hotel. But next time I want to stay in this neighborhood I'll go for the character-less Grand Mercure Roxy or similar which is more likely to provide a good night's sleep.
Pls don't stay in room 220 unless on an hourly basis!
