“Lifesaver!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013

Having wandered the streets of LIttle India in search of a hostel with a free bed for 3 hours, I was delighted that Shophouse had space for a small and weary traveller. Note to self: for future reference, do not turn up on National Day in Singapore without having booked somewhere to stay.

The dorm was a little crowded and basic, but by Singapore standards is well priced. Areas of the hostel were incomplete, but it showed the foundations of a great hostel.

Most importantly, the hostel is quite well located, and the staff are lovely and fantastically helpful. I would definitely stay here again when the works are complete, as I think it will be an excellent hostel.

Perfect place for our two days in Singapore, located on Arab St, near everything! Beds were v comfortable and the rooms were clean and bright. We stayed in a 14 bed dorm and it wasn't cramped or squashed. Breakfast was also included although basic it was a handy option. Free wifi aswell which was an added bonus! Loved the trendy little cafe below the hostel... Cool little spot to chill out and have a coffee!! Staff in the hostel and cafe were great and talked us through a map which really set us up for a day exploring!

After hearing about this hostel from a friend of mine, we decided to try it out and we are glad we did.

It's located in a very convenient area - close to the MRT, malls and lots and lots of food places. I sometimes find it really hard to find food as I am a strict vegetarian but Arab street has a bunch of restaurants that does veg meals which was great. If eating outside is not an option, there is always the free 'all day breakfast' at the hostel. You don't really have to rush before 10AM to eat breakfast. You can have breakfast at 10 in the morning or 10 in the night if you feel like grabbing a bite. There is also a really cute coffee shop at the ground floor that offers yummy food, juices, coffee and beer! :D

We booked two beds in the ladies dorm room. Dorm was great - you get your own lockers, aircon that works pretty well, clean bathrooms, comfy mattresses and good bed linen.

There is also an awesome roof top area where you can spend your evening sipping beer or just chill. In addition to that they have a social lounge equipped with a tv, movies, books (I think I saw some video games too) etc.

The best best best part about this place was the people, They were nice, very friendly and amazing amazing staff, It was so good that by the 3rd day my friend started calling it 'home' :D

They are not very strict on check in and check out times.. We had an early flight to SG - so headed to the hostel to drop of our bags and they checked us in right away as the beds were available. On our last day we had a late night flight, so we checked out and they took care of our bags.

Overall this is a great place to stay in - I am definitely gonna come here next year as well.

Having stayed at this area & usually at the same place (elsewhere), I'd decided to venture to somewhere new - this place certainly made me glad I'd decided to try somewhere new. Because the hostel is at the 1st floor, the signage can be quite easy to miss, especially if you are in a taxi/car. So, while you keep your eyes peeled for the sign, do also look out for a café called “Working Title” – here is actually where the reception for the hostel is. The reception is open for as long as the café is open, which is from around 8.00am till 11pm and you’ll need to make special arrangements for your key collection/return if you don’t arrive/leave within this time.

Location is great – close to food, the train station (I prefer the Nicholl Highway one, tho’ you could stop at Bugis too), convenience stores, ATMs, etc. Love all the witty signage, pictograms & posters around the hostel. Love the Social Lounge & Terrace at the rooftop and also the "Breakfast Club", a pantry where you can help yourself to all sorts of goodies (i.e. coffee, tea, cereal, bread, etc.), that also serves as a place to consume meals.

I’d opted for the 12-bedded all-female dorm on the all-female floor (a.k.a. No Man’s Land) – it was clean, felt spacious, pleasant air-conditioning worked fine, comfy bed that didn't creak.. nothing out of the ordinary. Loved it that each bed was assigned TWO plug points! However, since my bed was right next to the window, you can hear some of the noise from the street later in the night.

Location is nice: lots of restaurants around. Nearest MRT station around 10 min away. The 6 bed dorm was clean. Showers worked well. Wifi-connection worked also pretty well. The staff is really polite and friendly. They have a full-day breakfast included in the price, which is really convenient! No need to rush up before 10am for breakfast! :)

I would stay here again!

The location was fantastic, great shopping, eating and drinking all within immediate walking distance. The MRT is, realistically, about a 10-15 min walk away, as is the nearest ATM. The cafe downstairs is cute and has slow, but friendly, service and realistic prices ($4 slice of pizza, $8 craft beers, $5-6 sandwiches). So it's a good option if you don't feel like wandering far for a meal.

I stayed in the female 12 bed dorm. While so many beds in one room was not ideal, it was the only one available with a window. The other all female, 8 bed dorm, slightly resembled a dark cupboard. The beds have their own lockers, lights and power sockets. The bunk beds were cute, but not at all sturdy. They shook when someone moved to the higher bunk, they shook when either person shifted in their sleep, they shook when either person sat up, etc. An easy addition to this style of bunks would be curtains, so as to block out unwanted light and provide some privacy when necessary. Maybe something for them to consider. Also, while the two air conditioning units were great, the second flooded the room for an entire week. It made it difficult to store luggage, a bit unsanitary and the fact it took them so long to organise a technician really didn't reflect well on them.

The bathrooms had fast hot water. They are combined toilet/showers, constantly wet and about the same size as a public toilet cubicle. No aircon in this part of the building. Only 2/3 had a mirror.

The rooftop bar and lounge were nice, if a bit dirty and run down. It feels like they attempted to do the whole eclectic vintage thing but fell a bit short. Instead of looking old, but with character and charm, it was a bit more like someone just donated a bunch of their old furniture that was on the verge of falling apart. E.g. the flaking door table. Maybe sand it back and varnish it?

The kitchen was limited, with possibly the tiniest fridge I have ever seen. Like, calling it a bar fridge would be generous. I am really not sure what you could fit in there. The breakfast was great but occasionally people would forget to stock it.

As for being a 'social hostel', while the rooftop bar does allow for socialising, it just isn't on par with other, more established hostels, who frequently organise fun/cheap/free things to do around the city with other travellers. The most this hostel offered in the week I was there was a pub crawl hosted by an external company that cost $25.

I know this sounds like a lot of negatives, but I did enjoy my stay here and the people here were warm and lovely. It's just that this hostel has so much potential, with its great cafe and location. It just fell frustratingly short of the mark. That said, it looks superior to a lot of other Singaporean hostels, and the price was very reasonable.

Room Tip: Try to get a bed away from the door.

Hi biancayh thanks for the review, we are glad that overall you enjoyed your stay and we welcome you to return on your next visit to Singapore to enjoy some of the changes we have made! We have made a big effort on the rooftop with some new tables, a swing seat and a bit of a redesign. We are still a new hostel and so we are always interested in what improvements our guests think we can implement to further enhance their visits.

Cheers,
Basirah

I stayed here with a friend on a quick trip through Singapore. The location is very handy for the subway (which goes straight to the airport) and there are plenty of restaurants and bars in the adjacent streets... the 12 bed dorm is an L shaped room meaning it feels more like 2 sets of 6 bed dorms. There is also a lovely rooftop which we enjoyed breakfast in the mornings and drinks in the evenings... Throughout of 3 night stay there were 2really nice and helpful girls on reception who would give us advice on where to go and chat about our plans for the day! The oy minor downside was there are 3 toilets/showers on the ladies floor meaning there is often a wait... This is a great little hostel an I would stAy there again!

Room Tip: We stayed in the cheapest 12 bed female dorm and the shape of the room made it feel.more like 2 sets...
