“Lovely hostel - great service, good location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

Nice atmosphere, convenient location, friendly staff. Beautiful view from the roof top. The only con is the price, but Singapore is expensive, so it's really not that bad. Plus, breakfast is included - you can have all the toast, cereal, tea and coffee you like, all day. Definitely recommendable!

Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review! We agree that Singapore is expensive (especially accommodation) but I'm sure we offered you value for money!

We look forward to hosting you again in future :)

We chose this hostel initially because of the comments on this website, and have no regrets. The staff is helpful and welcoming, rooms are simple and clean with good air cond (Required given the climate) . the location is just perfect, near the subway (5 minutes), and several nice bars (2 minutes). the district is really lively and pleasant (street concerts, bars with terraces on the street and with better prices than clarky the trendy district) . there is a seven eleven right outside the hotel, perfect to buy some beer and enjoy them on the rooftop with other people of the hostel (great memories). I was there at the beginning of May 2013 with a friend, two french in Singapore, and it was an awesome stay.

Hi Antho_tls,

Thanks for the review and letting other guests know about the perks of staying with Shophouse! We enjoy having a beer or two at the rooftop terrace and lounge ourselves! ;)

Even better news, we are opening our own cafe/bar at the ground floor at the end of the year so expect an even greater experience when you come back next time!

Cheers,
Calvin

Amazing hostel with amazing staffs in an amazing area in an amazing country.

Chose this hostel initially because of it's competitive price and wasn't expecting anything much. But it turned out to be a real pleasant surprise

It may sound a little too good to be true but this pretty new hostel is truly a nice place to be if you happen to visit Singapore whether it's with friends, your family or just by yourself.
The owners definitely know what a traveller needs and the hostel is well-designed to meet everything you need and want in a hostel.

The Room:
Air conditioning is good which is especially important in the tropics. Beds are decent and comes with quilts and pillow which allowed me to enjoy a good night's sleep every night. Along with the free ear-plugs given out at the reception, I have never slept better during my travels.
Everyone has their personal locker and the locker is definitely much spacious than most hostels that I have slept in. Though they are spacious, the lockers ain't large enough for your backpacks or luggage. Though they might fit a 40litres backpack, the 60litres one that I used can't possibly fit in. However, the Dorms are spacious enough for you to place your luggage by the bed or by the wall without causing an obstruction to others. Would recommend the 8bed dorms if you're going with friends as it offers more privacy along with some cosiness without burning too huge a hole in your wallet.
All beds come with their own power-point and reading light.

Facilities:
They have got a really nice common area at the rooftop where you get a good view of the surrounding area and gives a pretty interesting view of old style shophouses surrounded by towering buildings Such as the Suntec City and Park Royal Hotel.
They have got a TV at the common area and instead of showing local channels, they have a collection of movies to choose from which really allowed me to catch-up with the movies that I missed while travelling.
Showering facilities are adequate though nothing luxurious. They however, come in three different sizes on the floor I was staying in. The only downside of the toilet was that it's a little warm in it but I guess that's how it is in the tropics unless we want windows in our toilets. Towels can be rented for a mere SGD$2 for the duration of your stay.
The room cost includes an all day breakfast which is really thoughtful as I could have my breakfast even at 1pm or when I'm hungry in the middle of the night. The all day breakfast is a simple fare of Coffee, Tea, Bread and Cereal. One of the most amazing thing they have that I rarely see in other places is the Nutella spread. Do take note that the hostel practises a "wash your own dishes" style. But for an all-day breakfast, that small little effort is definitely nothing.

Location:
The hostel is pretty centrally located in Singapore and just a 5minutes walk from the subway station. So it's actually in a very convenient location. Golden Mile complex where most tour buses depart for Malaysia is just a 15 minutes walk away, not to mention the famous Golden Mile Food Centre which serves up delicious local food at reasonable prices.
It's located right in the middle of a heritage area with restaurants and boutiques just a few steps away.
The convenience store is also just across the road if you ever need anything in the middle of the night.

Service:
The owners and staffs are friendly and helpful, not to mention good-looking, especially the two owners, always trying their best to answer our queries and getting things done for us.

The bad:
The Hostel is so amazing that there really isn't much to complain about. one of it would be their security system. While it definitely made me feel safer and sleep better, it's a little troublesome if you're absent minded like me as they require you to use a security card to access your rooms and I often leave it in the room while I hit the showers. As I mentioned earlier, the showers come in 3 sizes and the smallest of the three is probably a little too cramped. The common area is also 5 stories up, at the roof-top, so some basic fitness is probably required to conquer the stairs.

Conclusion:
Great place for the budget conscious as this place has everything a traveller need though not extravagant. Room rates includes great service, a good night's sleep and all-day breakfast. Amazing value for money.

Helpful and welcoming staff, cool and funny interior design, clean dorm room with great beds (which is the most essential part) and strong air conditioner (bit chilly at night), simple and clean shower rooms, great free breakfast at the social area on the rooftop. The hostel is located in a district with reserved shophouses, and that makes the view from the rooftop (where the lounge is) really awesome: old red shophouse roofs neighboring skyscrapers. It is about 5min walk from Bugis MRT Station, a bit walk but still fine with me. 7-11 is just across the street. Pubs and cafes in this area close really late at night so there's no need to worry about nightlife. I'm truly blessed staying in Shophouse Hostel and I've got to stay here again next time visiting SG.

I stayed here when I was in Singapore this year and I loved it! The staff was so friendly and helped us with everything! It felt like they became our friends. The rooftop is also amazing! So this is definitely the place you should choose if you're going to go to Singapore! Especially if you are a backpacker cause I think they have mostly dorms.

So, a big thank you shophouse, for taking care of me Emilia and Beatrice when we came to Singapore!

In case you're still doubting about whether to book this hostel: do it immediately. You won't regret it!

- The location is just perfect: situated in the Arabic quarter (Arab Street), next to Haji Lane, one of the coolest streets of Singapore (with bars, restaurants and unique shops).
The other main attractions are on walking distance or easy to reach by public transport.

- Biggest plus is the roof terrace. I couldn't stop taking pictures during the night time. The view on the city is incredible. It's also a nice place to meet other travellers since you can eat the (free and all day available) breakfast on the roof terrace. There are power plugs (and wifi) too so in case you and your laptop are inseparable, you can stick together while enjoying the view.

- Staff: friendly and helpful. When I came in for the first time, they already knew my name. I felt welcome immediately.

- Rooms: big, clean and beautiful. Good matrasses, uniquely decorated, lockers with a key, clean bathrooms, etc. etc.

It's all in the details and the owners of the hostel are very well aware of that. The names of the different rooms are art on itself (No Mans Land for the female dorms, etc.), there are recipes on the wall of the kitchen with typical food from Singapore, you'll see funny pictures of the cleaning ladies who ask you to wash your own dishes, and when you check out, they will take a picture of you to put on their "wall of fame" (pictures with all the guests, standing in front of the reception),

Go, go go, before they are fully booked!

We are the rugby team of 45ppl from hong kong, this time came to Singapore for a rugby training and friendly match with the local famous rugby team.
This hostel is really awesome, not only the location is very nice, but also the hostel atmosphere, the rooftop is really really attractive and comfortable.
Also the room and bed is comfortable, wifi is really good.
And the all day breakfast is really suitable for our group of player ;,)
One more things that we are really appreciate, as we are the large group of team, it is very difficult for us to find a place to settle, shophouses provide full of support that help us to arrange the beds and the rooms. Also, kelvin, mustaffa and all the staffs are really helpful, and willing to support us. That's made our team had a really fantastic and awesome trip in Singapore for 5days, thank you so much ;D
