“A long way from Penang”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2014

If you have a sudden insatiable crave for Penang hawker food at Changi, this place might help appease it. Otherwise, even with all the added spices and chili, it lacks flavour. There are far better eateries serving Penang food in Singapore (like Princess Terrace Kitchen at Copthorne King's hotel, or the more modest Penang Kitchen on Coronation Road). Prices look reasonable, until you realise the portions are minuscule! Once you have a seat (which might take a while at peak times) and have paid for your food, it comes fairly quickly.

“Good hawker style food, loved the prawn noodles”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2014 via mobile

I had prawn noodles (they only serve the soup version), and it's so good. The stock is awesome and the prawns are quite big.

The balonglong (?) drink tasted funny to me, not to my liking.

The desserts were good, enjoyed it.

Though it's a little pricey for hawker style food, I think it's worth spending!

“Crowded for Saturday night dinner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2014

The food is pretty good and close to what you expect to get in Penang. "Close" but good enough. The price is reasonable but the thing that put you off is the long wait for seats. Then again, this is a common problem in Singapore. The service is acceptable despite the crowd. The items we ordered did not takes too long to prepare. If you really want to enjoy the food, try it at a less busy time.

“Ok food, quick and cheap for an airport- but not Penang level”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2014

Changi Airport is just too good to be true, and this includes the food choices. Whilst it would be excessive to say that it is a food destination by itself, it definitely offers a much better range and level overall than most airports I have aver visited, and i have visited over 40 so far. So when i say Gurney Drive is "OK", this is an "OK" for a place where food tends to be pretty good.
We went there just before 9 PM on a weekday, it was busy but orderly and we were sat promptly. The system where you write down your order and pay at the cashier, although not posh, is quite functional and minimises errors, especially as the place doesn't have too many staff people. We chose pretty straightforward options: assam curry noodles, BBQ stingray, lor bak (stuffed beancurd skin with pork and tofu) and some vegetables. The drink we wanted was sold out..
Food was generally OK, although the flavours were quite flat compared to the real Penang stuff. The lor bak was particularly flavourful, whilst the BBQ stingray was...just not barbecued in any way, which felt like a bit of a cheat.
The staff was prompt and kind and overall it wasn't an unpleasant dining experience especially for the price (less that SGD 40).

“Not quite Penang standard or price but this is Singapore.....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014

What do you do if you want Penang food in Singapore? Well, there are only a few places that do a reasonable job of Penang food in Singapore. Is Gurney Drive one of them. The answer is YES, but it only does an average job by Penang standards

1) Satay - Below Average - US$8 for 10 rather slim sticks and def not chargrilled
2) Chicken curry with rice - US$6 for 4 small pieces of chicken is really expensive
3) Char Kuay Teow US$ 6+ - taste was good but portion could be bigger
4) Lobak US$6 - Not too bad but not really authentic as the rolls were large more like Singapore ngoh hiang
5) Belachan rice US$8 - you don't get very much at all although the taste was Ok
6) Nasi lemak US6 - rice was really nice but all you really get apart from the side condiments is one chicken wing.

Overall it costs us US$15 each without drinks for what you could have had for a quarter the price in Penang, but this is Singapore ...... and for an airport place, you could argue the prices are actually good, no more expensive than the horrendously expensive restaurants at KLIA.
