Most business hotels (alright, I'll say it - most hotels) in Singapore suffer from the same dreary, beige-on-beige rooms and corporate-looking, non-offensive/nondescript design. Not so with the Parkroyal on Pickering, which is as refreshing and original as its competition isn't. The radical architecture and design looks as good in person as it does in the photos - a dramatic sky-garden in the heart of the city, with sleek interiors that could double as a B&B Italia showroom. It's a hip and stylish place that somehow still manages to toe the line as a well-run business hotel.
The rooms are modern yet comfortable and cozy at the same time. We loved the open bathroom concept and floor-to-ceiling windows in our deluxe room, which made it feel so much bigger than it actually was (if I had one minor suggestion to make, it would be that the toiletries smelt overpoweringly of an old man's cologne). The central lighting system was also a bit confusing - you could pick from four different lighting moods/schemes, but there is no way to turn on or off individual lights - a bit frustrating when you just want to switch off the bathroom lights! However, these are just minor suggestions, and in no way detract from one of the most beautifully-designed rooms in Singapore.
We stayed on the Orchid Club floor, which was definitely one of the nicest premium lounges I have ever visited. You could help yourself to open-kitchen style snacks and feel like you were relaxing in your millionaire friend's penthouse with a spectacular city view. The servers were also super-friendly and attentive, plying us with Singapore slings and margaritas until the room started to spin! ;) The infinity pool was nice if a bit on the small side and tended to get rather crowded. We had breakfast downstairs in the hotel restaurant, which was decent but fairly standard. If I had one wish it would be for a rooftop bar, which is strangely missing from such a hip hotel. There is a bar/lounge extension in the restaurant and a small bar next to check-in, but both felt like an afterthought; not really anywhere you'd want to spend time in. I'm just pointing out opportunities however, as this in no way detracted from our enjoyment of the beautiful grounds.
Excellent: a short walking distance from the nightlife activities in Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and food in the Chinatown area (hot tip: make a left onto New Bridge Road and walk down about 10 mins until you reach Keong Saik Road, which currently has some of Singapore's best bars and restaurants!).
Overall, we had an eye-opening stay and a welcome break from the usual Singapore corporate fare. Parkroyal on Pickering is definitely one of the best business hotels in the country and a must-stay for yuppies or anyone who appreciates good design. Time for the competition to pick up their game.
