“Sun yat sen in Singapore”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

This museum has a superb record of the visits to China of 'The Father of Modern China'. There are superb photos of Sun Yat Sen (aka Zhong Shan) and the people he associated with in Singapore in their organising to overthrow the ailing Qing dynasty at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is itself worth visiting but the the many photos and historical documents bring the story to life. As both entrance guided tour fees are low, this museum is well worth an hour or so of your time, especially if you are following the heritage trail.

“Very good!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

I hd heard of it and thought..ah yes one day... until I "bumped" into it while visiting the Balestier neighborhood. What a brilliant surprised. beautiful house and garden full of history. the Museum is cheap and the staff lovely. I came 15 minutes before it was going to close but they kept it open for me, and a volunteer who was leaving stayed to take me around. I learned so much! it is really well done, lots of explanations, original pictures. really worth the visit!

“A museum often left out in itineraries but worth going if you are interested in Chinese history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall is a place you probably won't go unless you have either finished touring the rest of the more touristy attractions in Singapore and no longer have places to visit or you are particularly interested in the stories of Sun Yat Sen.

Located in serene premises, the memorial hall is very well maintained and there are two stories of exhibitions. On the day we went, there was an activity held for children, where the children were introduced to history in a fun and interactive manner (albeit with a screaming and some running around).

The manner of the exhibition is diverse. It includes a collection of paintings, calligraphy works, a bronze mural depicting Singapore's history from the 1840s to the 1940s and videos explaining Sun Yat Sen's revolutionary work. Most of the exhibits are in English and Chinese (although some are purely in Chinese).

I think this is one of the museums in Singapore that is easily overlooked because 1) it is not in the city 2) it has an extremely specialised theme. Despite this, I think that this Memorial Hall was very informative and will be interesting for those who have vaguely heard about Sun Yat Sen, who are interested about Chinese history or those who would like to see a different kind of museum.

“Where history remembers Sun Yat Sen in Singapore”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

A good collection of photos & artifacts of local Chinese who supported Dr. Sun and his revolution. Better kept & maintained than that in Penang.

“A unique look at a fascinating time in history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2012

The Sun Yat-San memorial hall is a wonderful look back a a truly people-led time in history when ideals and dreams stood for much. We were fortunate to have an excellent tour guide who was passionate and knowledgable. The tour took about an hour after which we were free to wander the rooms of this magnificent Villa. Take your time here as there is much to look at and ponder over.
