“Very Good Budget Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

Budget and location-wise, Strand Hotel is a very good and convenient hotel. Had a good 3D2N stay with friends. The hotel is surprisingly very quiet despite the construction is taking place just outside of the hotel.

Location:
Not a lot of tourist attraction but Bras Basah and Dhoby Ghaut MRT station and bus stop is on a walking distance. Excellent!

There is Bencoolen station construction so it may be inconvenient for some of the guests. But it is not as dusty as you expected. The construction workers clean the mess and even mop the sidewalks (at least that is what I saw).

711 is right across the street. There is also kopitiam next to it with reasonably-priced and good varieties of foods. You may consider to have a breakfast here should you on a long stay at Strand.
Coffee Bean is also nearby if you want to grab some coffee and chilling up.

A health clinic is located beside the hotel.

For muslims, there is masjid just 50 meters away from the hotel and halal food stall nearby.

If you a vegetarian, there is a lot of vegetarian restaurant at Fortune Center. Just a walking distance away.

Staffs:
Front desk was very helpful but all of the staffs are unfriendly. What's wrong with smiling? It is not hotel Transylvania.

Rooms:
Room is not that spacious but very clean. The bed is fine, the pillow could be better. Air conditioning is working fine. TV placement is questionable, why did they place it between the pillars? We ended up not touching that big nice TV. But hey, who is watching TV while on a vacation?

The room has a decent sound proof materials as we didn't have in issue with construction just below our window.

Bathroom is rather small but again is very clean with good amenities and separate toilet, great for group stay I must say :D
Shower is nice and has great water pressure. Never had an issue with the hot water.

Breakfast:
Strand offers very basic and tasteless menu of breakfast:
2 chicken sausages, 2 ham bacons, sunny side up / scrambled egg and hash brown / red bean.

There is also a small buffet of:
- Coffee / Tea (both are poor).
- Cheap cereals and milk.
- Cheap toast/pancake.
- Bland fried Noodles (better mix it with sambal provided for a better taste).
- Orange / apple juice.

I suggest you to have a breakfast at Kopitiam across the street for a better taste and mood.

Wi-fi:
We have a complimentary wi-fi during our stay. Speed is reasonably quick but signal strength is kinda poor in our room.

Overall Experience:
We were not stay in the hotel most of the time, but I have to say we had a comfortable and decent stay.

If you're a on a group vacation and on a budget, you night consider Strand Hotel.

Room Tip: Choose room away from construction site if you wish.

BOOKING
This hotel does not have online registration anywhere. You simply fill in the forms from their website. Submit it then the hotel staff will reply your email.
You will need to provide your credit card Information to secure the bookings. First of all, this may seem unsecure sending credit card informations over the email. But I have no problem.
Your credit Card will not be charged at the time of booking, and will be charged upon check-in, or if a no show, then hotel will charge your credit card for 1 night.
You may also prefer to pay in cash.

LOCATION
the location is superb!, close to bus stops at rendezvous hotel just 50 metres away, and the other is at Prinsep St. you will have to walk pass Rendezvous hotel at the back of Strand Hotel (there is a shortcut)
Also VERY close to Bras Basah MRT (Exit D).
Also near:
- 7-eleven right accross the street
- Kopi Tiam (24 hours food hall)
- Coffee Bean Coffee shop

there is a construction right in front of the hotel, but will halt after around 9pm.
make sure you get the room facing the rear.
We got room 601 right at the end of the hotel, facing Rendezvous Hotel which is very nice view

This Hotel also in progress of renovations, They are currently renovating 2nd and 3rd floor

ROOM/AMENITIES
Our room was at renovated 6th floor, so it's quite clean, bathroom also updated but no electricity outlets, clean and comfy bed with extra pillow, LCD TV, an empty refrigerator but working cool, and a very cold AC.. *lol*
Hot water is running fine.

WIFI
We get a complimentary Wifi, which we did not have the chance to try it out, but nice to have that option

BREAKFAST
The dining area is.. well.. from my view looked like a vintage old Diner.. haha

Breakfast was very very basic, you will have a portion of:
2 pcs of Bacon + 2 pcs of sausages + Sunny Side up + 1 Hash Brown
which is enough to start the day
the next day, the breakfast vary a bit:
2 pcs of Bacons + 2 pcs of sausages + scrambled egg + red beans

there are also a small buffet of:
- Cofee / Tea (coffee is really bad... )
- Cereals (corn flakes and milk)
- Toast / French Toast or Pancakes
- Fried Noodles
- orange juice

which you can help yourself

If you get bored with this breakfast, you can just hop to Kopi Tiam.

STAFFS
staffs are great and friendly (well except those at the restaurant a.k.a diner)

OTHERS
There is an Internet Kiosk at the lobby which you can use for S$1 per 15 minutes, using a dollar coin.

Overall, We had a good sleep here. we got the Double Room for S$140, there are options of Family Rooms for S$240 and S$280 up to 5 person staying per room.

Very easy getting around from this hotel (Bus and MRT) you can also ask the reception to call a taxi for you.

Room Tip: Choose a far left room to get a good view.. x01 room...

Overall this hotel meets expectations. The front desk was very helpful and spoke English well (like most of Singapore). Conveniently located near the subway station and as of February 2013, Bencoolen station is under construction so you would need to go around the construction area to get to the hotel. Probably once the construction is done, the subway is just right outside the hotel. Kopitiam is nearby and is open 24 hours if you need to get your foodie fix. Not a lot of tourist attractions to go to on foot, everything is a train ride away.

Would recommend this if you will be out most of the time.

This hotel is very basic. The room was large an clean with comfortable bed and large TV. Well airconditioned and had good powerful shower. Reception staff were helpful and friendly. We Had B&B and I have to say the breakffast was poor. It was in a cafe attached to the reception area and there were cereals, toast and noodles available on the buffet. You also had a cooked "English" breakfast which was not cooked to order. It came out a soon as you sat down and was cold!! Another downside is that ther is constuction work directly outside the front door. Although we were never bothered by the noise, it made the area dusty and dirty and pick ups awkward. At the present time I would not revisit.

I was so confused which hotel to go as trip advisors has all kinds of review.i will give thumps up for Strand hotel. Its a good three star experience if you take deluxe room and ask for room which has behind road view.

Its perfect location for MRT, Bus station and food options. Also, there is a Seven eleven opposited of this hotel. That makes it easy for u. Dhobby ghaut is walkable from there

Great value for money. i dont think you have any such option in Singapore....Just go for it

Room Tip: Choose room away from the MRT construction

We stayed a week and the price was reasonable, the room offer cheap polyester quality pillow and bedsheets and the room was poorly lighted. The location just opposite a a Seven Eleven store for cheaper beer and drinks to bring back to your room. A large dinning area Food Court called Kopitiam. You could eat cheaply and all sort of Asian fares cooked in front of you and reasonably cheap, the coffee was better there too.. We had two unsmiling old looking and unfriendly bell boys from check-in-and-checkout time. The noise level was not acceptable because the subway construction below our room windows. If you want to sleep late, forget it, the housekeeping staff talk loud and make all sort of noises while pushing laundry trolleys and vacuum cleaners as early as 8 am.. we complained but every day was the same and that forced us to wake up. Breakfast was include but really silly offer, the food is quickly cooked and tasteless and the buffet displays was with cheap bread, cheap marmalade and margarine. The cereals were the cheapest you could find in supper markets and honestly, the coffeehouse look clinical and so uninviting, with plastic chairs, fake leather sofa and the coffee, you would not even touch it. When we asked for quality freshly brood breakfast coffee, they charged us the same price as a five star hotel, even when we told them we would not eat the breakfast, just to quality cups of coffee, disgusting! The only people who were friendly were the old ladies at the front desk. The price was very reasonable and location is perfect as it is walking distance to Orchard Road and Raffles City. beware that at night, there are lots of Filipino lady Boys (Transvestite) looking for sex and the occasional china prostitute who will accost you at the entrance of seven eleven. they are petty thefts, so don't even think of bringing them to your room. also some Indian men, coming to you and saying 'You are a Lucky Man' beware, they are conman and want to tell your for and ask for money, they are not from Singapore and are petty thief as well. By the time you look for help, they are long gone and in Singapore, you don't see a single policemen ion the street which at night is frustrating if you are in trouble. The Strand Hotel allows China prostitutes to use the hotel and they are making too much noise in the wee hours of the morning, shouting in the corridors and smoking in non smoking floor.. so cheap but with the problems of a non star hotel.

Room Tip: ask for corner room away from the noice facing the hotel with subway constructions.

Simply love the spacious room like old time, able to run around so to speak. Its an old hotel, hence a liftups for the room will be great. Great location for almost everything, like sightseeing, shopping and looking for food. MRT Bras Basah is just 2min away, Dhoby Ghaut is some walking distance, buses are everywhere on Orchard Road..

Room Tip: Its just right place to stay for a family setting. Location is just at where you want to be.. Shoppi...
