I am not a zoo person. So when my family wanted to try the Singapore Zoo, I was skeptical. I really hate seeing animals in cages, and pacing miserably back and forth in inhumane conditions, and I have avoided zoos like the plague. I don't even go to animal movies and will not watch Animal Planet. Ever.

I relented, and went to the zoo on the recommendation of friends. I am glad I did. You cannot see the fences and the animals are happy. The monkeys (some of them) are free range and can roam the confines of the zoo. There is a wonderful tram that gives you a break from the heat and mercifully takes you from stop to stop for a small fee. The zoo is thoughtfully plotted and planned to each small detail, Including feeding times of the animals. They have token feedings where you can participate in feeding some of the animals. Don't miss the baboons!! Plan your day around their token feeding. Bring cash and prepare to have a blast.

The Singapore Zoo is something different. The layout of the zoo allows guests to roam around the zoo, being close to many animals and their environment. There are many different animals you can see here ranging from the tropical animals to the down-under, and the arctic penguins. The zoo offers a tram that takes you around the zoo. I would suggest not spending the S$5 for the tram rides as it is better to walk around. My recommended spending time at the zoo is about 5 hours. You can see the whole zoo in about 3 hours but you also want to see the shows and the animal feeding.

My recommended itinerary:
1pm to 6:30pm Singapore Zoo (6pm is when the zoo closes)
6:30pm to 7:30pm dinner time at the food court or the buffet
7:30 to night visit the Night Safari

My wife and i were on a a layover and decided to go to the zoo. It rained but we bought some umberllas at the gift shop and walked around anyway. Even with the rain it was the best experince. Some animals went in but many stayed out. We wished we could of stayed for the night safari but we had to go make our flight. This layover made us want to come back we are planning to go to Singapore and stay at least two weeks

A great zoo. Easy to get around. Great for photographers. Easy to get close to the animals. Friendly tram drivers. Nice gift shop.
