“Gem of a hostel (and owner!)...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Happy Snail just before Xmas 2012. The hostel is in an apartment building but good security. Location wise, it’s not as central as some other hostels but there are endless buses running from just outside and China town is 30 minute walk. The nearest metro is 15 min walk.

The hostel is more like a large flat and reminded me of being at university but without the mess. There are only 3 or 4 rooms in the hostel. We stayed in the 8 bed dorm which is smaller than some, but you get your own locker. There are two showers and two toilets which is still plenty.

Very good value, incredibly clean and good free wifi with a free computer to use as well. Huge plasma TV with comfy bean bags to chill out on.

24 hour kitchen with endless supply of tea, coffee, bread, peanut butter and nutella, and the local food hall next door sells great food at local prices.

This is very much a community hostel as it is small, so if you are a traveler that likes to keep themselves to themselves, you might prefer somewhere that's easier to disappear amongst the masses… You can’t go wrong staying here if you're after a more homely hostel, unusual for a city like Singapore.

The icing on the cake for this hostel is the owner – Mike! One of the most helpful, friendliest owners we have come across. He will bend over backwards to accommodate you and help you out, books tickets all sorts of tickets at a discount etc etc.

On the first night we were in seperate bunks but when people moved out, he made a new bed and asked if I’d like to switch. We also shipped some stuff back to the UK and he went out of his was to find boxes for us sourced packing tape and all of his advice was spot on.

We can’t recommend either The Happy Snail (or Mike!) enough… 6 stars!!!

I stayed at this hostel for two nights. It is probably one of Singapore’s least expensive accommodations options (i.e., approximately $18 USD/night). The hostel is located in an apartment building in a suburban area of the city, fairly close to a subway stop and various bus lines. A small mall with inexpensive, casual eating establishments (some offered seating; others offered take-out) and convenience stores was located steps away from the hostel. Despite the management’s explicit directions, I had difficulty finding the hostel, and late on the night of my arrival, found myself knocking on a neighbor’s door to ask where the hostel was located. The hostel’s kitchen and baths were shiny and new, and the hostel was spotlessly clean. A washer and dryer were available for guests’ use. Breakfast was adequate (e.g., cereal, fruit, nutrition bars, coffee, tea, and juice), and guests could use the kitchen and access food at any time. The owner/manager was friendly and eager to assist travelers with planning their stays. My dissatisfaction with the hostel was due to the crowded conditions. I stayed in a 6-bed dorm room, which was extremely cramped. There were two to three other dorm rooms in the hostel, each of which appeared to have four to six beds. The other issue was that there were only two single bathrooms to accommodate everyone. The common seating area, which offered computers for guest use, was also quite small. Overall, this hostel has some positive qualities, but in my opinion, warrants a less than average rating due to the overcrowded quarters.

I stayed here for 3 weeks, and I had an excellent stay. I can't fault the place in any respects. The place was very clean, Mike, the owner is very friendly, and helpful. Some basic food is available throughout the day free of charge, and a wide selection of soft drinks can be bought. There are good facilities for washing your stuff, and yourself.

There is a hawker centre about 10 metres away for cheap food, and further afield both Mt Faber and Chinatown are only a short walk.

The atmosphere is generally relaxed, calm and friendly. I can't recommend it more.

We stayed here our whole time in singapore and is probably one of the most comfortable and cleanest hostels we've stayed at!
The owner mike and his family are so friendly. His wife cleans the place everyday and sometimes brings their little son, you can tell the hostel and its guests are important to them!
The reception is not open 24 hours, but Mike leaves his contact details for anyone to use, and is there for the vast majority of the daytime. When he isn't here mike trusts the guests which encourages a really laid back experience. I can't really stress just how welcoming and hospitable the place is.
Tea, coffee and toast is available all day, and free! There's a computer, wifi, cheap laundry, heavily discounted attraction tickets...
It is a small place, but it's easy to talk to people. The location is within reasonable walking distance of most of the city centre. There's a low budget cafeteria 30 seconds away, Marina Bay is around 40 minutes walk, or about 3 stops on the MTR. China town is a small walk away as well! Definitely take a visit to Maxwell cafeteria on the way to Chinatown!

I stayed here with 3 friends for 3 days and 2 nights last month.

As a first-timer in a backpacker hostel, I could say that Happy Snail represented that genre very well. It's only about 30 minutes from the airport by MRT and bus, and you can go anywhere from there easily by bus and MRT.

The place itself is very clean and cozy. It was good because being in a group of 4, we got to take the room with 2 double deck beds, so no need to share a room with other travelers. We were met by the wife of the owner, and she was just so accommodating! Ask her for directions, recommendations, and she'd answer adequately and truthfully, which is even better. The rooms all have AC and beds had clean sheets and comforters. Breakfast food is available all day for FREE: tons of different kinds of loaf bread and Nutella and other spreads, bananas, oranges, tea, coffee - just the essentials but enough to start the day. You also get to interact with other backpackers if you have some time to hang out in the living room, which I think is the best part about this hostel. They have a rule where non-travelers can't check in, which means you can expect some nice conversations here with people from different countries.

I'd stay here again when I get another chance to visit SG!

When we arrived it was very late but we got checked in easily! The owners were not even there but it didn't matter, they just left us instructions and we dealt with it all in the morning, happy days!

The dorms were clean, the whole hostel was, they clean it everyday, top to toe!

The couple who own it are great, very helpful and enthusiastic! They gave us lots of advice with regards to places to go and things to see, they even gave us free Segway tickets at sentosa!

Mike, the guy knows everything! We needed a new camera and told us exactly where to go do we didn't get ripped off which was really nice! He knows buses, times you name it! A very good person to have around as a traveller! He loves what he does clearly!

The facilities are great, wifi is fast and free tea, coffee and toast all day can only be a good point! This was also the cheapest place we could find!

The hostel is set a little way from places but not so far it becomes bad and hey a 15 minute walk never hurt anyone right!

All in all it's just a great little hostel!!!
