“It's ok!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2014

The best thing about this hotel is the location. It's easy to walk around Chinatown & the Chinatown train station is close by. The staff are super friendly and the interior is really cool. The rooms are great and in good condition except that they are super small. We had a superior double room which I would only recommend if you were solo. The basin isn't in the bathroom but in the bedroom. The hot water also didn't last for me and became cold. That wasn't good considering my partner didn't use the hot water and had a cold shower beforehand. Breakfast is good and again the staff are super nice.

Hi kristyrebecca,

Thank you for staying with us at Hotel 1929!

As shared, we do acknowledge that being housed in a conservative shophouse, Hotel 1929's rooms are relatively compact however it is well located to attractions, restaurants and bars as well as public transport and is a great way to explore Singapore.

Kindly allow us to extend our apologies for the hot water issue during your stay. We will try our best to improve ourselves and our offerings and to continue to provide a personable service at the hotel. Should you be looking for bigger rooms, perhaps you might wish to consider our Junior Suite or Terrace Suite during your next visit. Or alternatively, the New Majestic Hotel which is just 1 street away from Hotel 1929, and has larger rooms with more facilities.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Unlisted Collection group of hotels and do keep an eye out for our sister property - The Old Clare Hotel which will be opening in Sydney in 2015!

Warm regards,
Yan Goh

The hotel rooms in front are a bit better. But considering the price range, this one is very positive. Clean..5 min from MRT (metro). There is a Hindu temple in front, but we did rather hear this funny little birdie (a bit like a djungle bird would sound...didnt see it) then tje temple....service very (!) polite and the breakfast nice. One can have local style breakfast and/ or European style ( small uk breakfast included)....

Hi TravelKater,

Thank you for sharing about your recent stay with us!

Indeed Hotel 1929 is conveniently situated in the heart of Chinatown with public transport and local attractions closely situated. Do give Restaurant Ember a try during your next visit to Singapore as they do lovely set lunches and dinners!

Should you be travelling to London, do check out our sister property - Town Hall Hotel & Apartments and 196 Bishopsgate.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Unlisted Collection group of hotels and wishing you safe travels!

Warm regards,
Yan Goh

I wanted 1929 to be great. I had seen it from the outside and read many reviews.......it looked good.... It was not.
Having stayed in several boutique hotels for business I know to expect compact and creative. 1929 is ridiculously small.
Number 1 problem is that the toilet is under the shower in a cubicle not big enough for the toilet. When you shower you are jammed against the walls and the toilet and everything gets wet, when you use the toilet the shower drips on you.
It's no surprise the tiles and toilet are mouldy.
I thought given it was an old shophouse, my room might be a peculiar one. When I explained to reception, and asked if another was available I was told all superior double rooms were like this.
I'm glad I traveled alone this time with only carry-on bags because the room is so small there is no room for any luggage let alone my girlfriend.
It does have a small balcony but the doors open into the bed and desk, so you have to squeeze through to use it.
It doesn't have a fridge in the room as claimed, but one in the lobby.
I'm surprised by recent reviews complementing the customer service. I have found it basic. This is my second night here, and I haven't heard "hello or how are you" yet from reception staff. The maids are much friendlier.
I could go on.. bad paint job , etc..
With 3 nights left here, I spent today looking in rooms at other hotels so I don't make the same mistake again.

Positives: good air con, good water pressure, great location.

Unfortunately it's a bad attempt at something that it's not. Not boutique, not recommended.

Hi KDubLU,

Thank you for sharing about your recent stay with us at Hotel 1929.

We regret to hear that your stay with us was less than enjoyable. We do acknowledge that being one of the first few boutique hotels to open in Singapore, our rooms are relatively more compact than most others. Nevertheless, we would like to thank you for sharing about your concerns and we have also noted about the service at the reception. We will share your feedback to better improve ourselves and our offering.

Perhaps during your next visit to Singapore you might want to check out our sister hotels - New Majestic Hotel and Wanderlust Hotel where the rooms are bigger with more facilities in each property.

Warm regards,
Yan Goh

I booked hotel 1929 having high expectations, judging from the exterior of the hotel and warm friendly welcome from front desk. Front desk officers were professional, polite and very helpful in customer resolution.

I booked the superior double, even though travelling alone, thinking it wouldn't be as small as i thought it would as they offered a superior single. That i was wrong. I had to nudge through every single corners of the irregular shaped room just to put down my (hardly enough space) luggage. Desk was just in front of the queen sized bed right beside the wall, and the toilet was small beyond abysmal. TV was small too. i remember having to hang my clothes above my study, which hardly made any sense in terms of design and layout.

I called front desk to change rooms, and was offered an upgrade (for S$70++) to their deluxe room. 301.

My room was right beside the chambermaid quarters, where at times i could hear them talk loudly from inside the room. Room was right beside the main road, which was still bearable. In terms of size, much more comfortable. but still underwhelmed, but i have to give credit again to the great CS team that helped me that day.

Free refreshments are provided but is located right smack beside the reception and restaurant. You'd be in the way of restaurant customers if you are not the quick pick and go type of person. Refreshments are basic- drinks and some local traditional snacks. Naumi Liora opposite has the same concept but better spaced - lower priced - newer rooms and bigger (even Naumi's single room is bigger than the double room at 1929)

Front desk (again) yes --were pleasant, if not a joy to be around with. Chambermaids were polite and spoke good english - they guided me to my room and were accommodating to my personal needs.

Would i visit again? No- because of the price and space. Design of the lobby is not what you'd expect of the rooms to be like. Rooms are quaint, and rustic, if not slightly old, and need some minor refurbishments. But all in all, kudos to the front desk team. Thanks for making my stay (somewhat) enjoyable.

Room Tip: Never pick the basic room even if it's for 2 Get the 2nd tier and above

Hi Alfie C,

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your recent stay at Hotel 1929.

We acknowledge that being housed in a conservative shophouse, the rooms are relatively compact. Should you be looking to plan another stay in the Chinatown neighbourhood, perhaps you would like to consider our flagship hotel, the New Majestic Hotel where the rooms are bigger with more facilities such as a swimming pool and gymnasium located within the property and just a street away from Hotel 1929.

With regards to the noise from the housekeeping staff, kindly allow us to extend our apologies and we would definitely take note of it.

Despite the concerns shared we are glad to hear that you found the service personable and that it did make your stay with us a better one. We hope to be able to welcome you back to the Unlisted Collection group of hotels and that perhaps the other properties might interest you.

Warm regards,
Yan Goh

The hotel wasn't hard to find. The exterior of the hotel is very nostalgic. The staff was very courteous, helpful, and accommodating. The hotel is very clean and orderly. It is located near 2 MRT stations (Outram Park and Chinatown) and the bus station. There are a lot of restaurants nearby. It's just a block away from the famous Chinatown Street Food area on Smith Street. The hotel is also within walking distance to Maxwell Food Center. We booked for 2 hotel rooms and both rooms were very clean and organized. We were given rooms with a balcony. However, the rooms were very small. The breakfast buffet was good. They have unlimited supply of snacks and drinks. =) We will definitely come back and stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that has a balcony (Rooms 206 and 208).

Hi pssstpssstpssst,

Thank you for sharing about your recent stay at Hotel 1929!

It is lovely to read that you enjoyed your time with us and indeed there is food aplenty around the hotel's vicinity. Hotel 1929 is housed within conservation shophouses in the culturally rich Chinatown neighbourhood and images from the National Archive adorning our walls showcases Singapore's past.

Indeed Restaurant Ember does serve up delectable food, and do show them your hotel keycard should you be looking to pop by for lunch or dinner to enjoy 10% off your total bill!

Looking forward to welcoming you back to Hotel 1929!

Warm regards,
Yan Goh

* small room ( could be a lor smaller than one can imagine)
* ok service
* ok breakfast
* good location closed to metro ( within 7 min walk from Outram Park, the purple line)
* Bad location in China town (Noisy!!!)
* Bathroom steam could not be evacuated properly which means there could be high chance of having a humid bedroom...

Hi Ollly106,

Greetings from Hotel 1929!

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your recent stay at Hotel 1929. We do acknowledge that being housed in a conservative building our rooms are relatively compact. As the hotel is situated along the streets of one of the city's popular dining hotspots, it can be quite lively on the weekends but is generally quite peaceful on weekday evenings.

Should you be looking at bigger rooms, perhaps you would like to check out our sister hotel, New Majestic Hotel which is just a street away from Hotel 1929 where it is quieter and yet just a stone's throw away from the restaurants and bars and an equally short walking distance to the local train station.

We hope to be able to welcome you back to the Unlisted Collection group of hotels and wishing you safe travels till next time!

Warm regards,
Yan Goh

Well located hotel in China town. Smalls rooms but for the price it is a good deal. I recommend this hotel for business or couples with limited budget.
This is a goos option if you are in Singapore and you will spend time outside of the hotel. Breakfast is limited but enough for the price.
