“Good location, average service.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

We chose this hotel due to its location and reasonable price. Both are good with many key attractions within an easy taxi ride of the hotel. Our concerns with the hotel were as follows: TV - We travelled with a friend so had adjoining rooms. Both TVs had issues. One the remote would not work, the other we sometimes could not change the TV channel using the remote or the buttons on the tv. We reported this twice a day for three days before a loose wire was identified as the issue on one of the tvs. Nevertheless the fault reappeared within a few hours. Room service - each time we rang there was no answer for up to five minutes then a rude lady making us feel like we had intruded on her time. On the final day we ordered breakfast, whilst the lady we ordered with was pleasant (for a change) it took one hour to arrive. When we chased it for the second time, they answered but hung up straight away. The breakfast arrived a few minutes later. Air con - It was very cold and the temperature could not be changed as the wall thermometer switch was broken.  Even after it was fixed by a handyman the temperature remained too cold for our three month son and therefore we had to turn it off at night so he could sleep.  Check out: this took over half an hour as reception were checking in two groups of five. Eventually a manager had to step in to check us out.

All of the above was reported to the hotel, and the staff tried to repair the TV, air con and apologized for the room service.

The River Terrace restaurant was good and we had an excellent laksa there. The concierge, porters, front of house, waiters were good and attentive.

Dear Daniel,

Thank you for the time to share your feedback on TripAdvisor. Your kind compliments on the staff service and coffee house will further encourage the teams to continue their hard work to enhance our guests’ stay. We are also delighted to hear that you like the hotel’s location and the easy access to key attractions in Singapore, as well as the laksa, which is one of our popular dishes at the coffee house.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the room service and other issues you have mentioned that were not up to your expectations. We greatly appreciate your feedback, which our heads of departments are looking into, as this provides us the opportunity to improve on areas which may need further fine-tuning. We would like to share with you that we always do our best to process the check-out procedure of guests at the fastest possible time with all available resources, including periods of high occupancy when there is a large number of guests checking-in/out at the same time. We would like to assure you that our Front Office Department head is looking into ways of further improving the process.

Many thanks for your comments and we hope to welcome you back to our hotel on your next trip to Singapore.

While on vacation in Singapore, we stayed for three nights at this hotel; then we moved to a cheaper one.

Pros
Quiet, clean rooms, many TV channels, nice view, near scenic river walk with many restaurants (the restaurants were always crowded in the evening, so my guess is that they were very good), helpful staff, good security (you had to use your room key even to go up the elevator), fast elevators.
Cons
Expensive, 20-minute walk to nearest MRT stop (Chinatown), noise of water draining from bathroom above us (I put a towel over the drain in the bathroom, and that stopped the noise), expensive snacks, no free breakfast, no free business center ($5 for 15 minutes of computer use).

Dear Neal,

Many thanks for your feedback and our teams will be delighted to hear your compliments, which will encourage them to strive harder.

Please accept our sincere apology on the concern you have mentioned and rest assured we are looking into it. We would like to share with you that the bus-stop just outside the hotel has frequent public bus services to a number of nearby train stations, including those in the popular Orchard Road shopping belt and the CBD. All the stops are within 4 to 8 bus-stops away. In fact, the nearest train station, Clarke Quay is only 4 bus stops from the hotel and 2 bus services go there. In addition, the buses also go to many places popular with visitors to Singapore, such as Orchard Road, Chinatown, Clarke Quay, Bugis, Little India, as well as Raffles Place and Shenton Way in the CBD. As Singapore is well known for its public transport system, a bus-train connection is a common mode of travel for many, locals and visitors alike. Also, there is a daily free shuttle bus service from the hotel to Orchard Road and Chinatown (near the entrance to Clarke Quay MRT Station) on regular intervals.

We also have a room package available on the Riverview Hotel website that includes breakfast and Internet for guests who prefer to have their first meal of the day in the hotel and need to go online frequently. With regard to the snacks, we are not sure if you are referring to the gift shop at our lobby, which is our tenant who determine their own pricings. As for our F&B pricings, we would like to share that they are comparable to a number of hotels of the same category and in the neighbourhood. In addition, to make it even more attractive for our diners, we run regular promotions, such as the current half price deal for the River Palace Chinese Restaurant’s new a la carte menu.

Once again, thank you for your comments and we look forward to seeing you again on your next visit to Singapore.

The hotel is not located at strategic location. Its not convenient to any MRT Station unless to take bus (which the bus stand is near). This hotel has been many years established in Singapore. Therefore, the internal decoration of the hotel is rather old style. I personally dislike the receptionist counter where there's a big pillar in the centre which blocking the way of queing and allowing others cutting queue. The hotel should offer more sitting places like sofa sitting for guests waiting at the waiting area. Needed to wait for 1-hour prior check-in hotel due to running full house. Waited till 4pm and finally check in. Was told to offer a free upgrade to club room due to request of interconnecting room not available at other floor and therefore requested to wait for 1-hour. Waited but then upgradement room not offer. Kinda disappointing.
Breakfast charges at $30.60 per adult. Bit pricey. The hotel room is comfortable. Full amenities with free parking. The parking bay is provided at no charge and best for Malaysian to drive to Singapore and park at the hotel. The nearest popular place near to the hotel is Clarke Quay Riverside (full of Pubs and Restaurants). Very happening during night time. Should be there if you are 1st timer to Singapore. Walking distance is approx 20 minutes. Preferably take a taxi.
Overall, short stay or driving in Spore, this hotel is recommended and reasonable.

Dear AhKing,

Thank you for recommending our hotel. We are glad that you like the parking and amenities, and found the room comfortable, which will encourage our Housekeeping team to keep up their efforts.

Please accept our sincere apologies on the areas you have commented and your feedback has been forwarded to the respective department heads to look into.

We would like to assure you that we always do our best to assign our guests their preferred room type with all available resources at the time of request, but this is not always possible during high occupancy periods. Also, should the needs arise, our guests can rest at the Jade Lounge that is next to the Front Desk while waiting to check-in.

On the hotel’s interior design, a regional look was selected by the architect for the last hotel renovation in 2008, which may not reflect the contemporary design expected by today’s international travellers. However, as part of our initiatives to enhance guests’ stays, we are pleased to let you know that the carpets on 3 floors have been replaced with a more user and eye-friendly design and other floors will follow soon.

With regard to the buffet breakfast, the price is comparable with many hotels of a similar category here in Singapore. Besides the buffet spread, our restaurant also has an a la carte menu that offers breakfast items from as low as S$7.80++. In addition, we have a room package on the Riverview Hotel website that includes breakfast, as well as Internet, for guests who prefer to have their first meal of the day in the hotel.

As Singapore is well known for its public transport system, a bus-train connection is a common mode of travel for many, locals and visitors alike. In addition, the buses also go to many places popular with visitors to Singapore, such as the Orchard Road shopping belt, Chinatown, Clarke Quay, Bugis, Little India, as well as Raffles Place and Shenton Way in the CBD.

Last but not least, we would like to share with you that, in addition to a stroll, taxi or bus ride, our guests can take a boat from the hotel jetty to Clarke Quay. We have a special room package available on our hotel website that includes free boat tickets for this trip. You can enjoy scenic views of colourful bridges and the unique combination of old warehouses and modern architectures as you start the journey down the Singapore River from Robertson Quay and end at Clarke Quay. Guests who do not book this package can also purchase the boat tickets separately from our Front Desk, with the option to upgrade to a one-day sightseeing pass. This pass includes unlimited bus trips and Singapore River boat cruises (you can even take the boat from Clarke Quay to Marina Bay Sands), as well as free bus transfer and entrance to Sentosa Island.

Once again, many thanks for your comments and we look forward to welcome you back to Riverview Hotel on your next trip.

Booked this hotel for one night. Average hotel with normal decorations but has all the amenities needed for a room: kettle, phone etc. And for this price I think it would be unreasonable to demand fancy decorations.

Check-in was prompt and room was very clean. However, the bedsheets look old and the TV was really blur and buzzy, which was extremely disappointing. Other than that, there wasn't really much to expect since this is not a five-star hotel. Would recommend this for people who do not want to spend too much money staying in five-star hotels but do want a room to sleep in comfortably.

Dear thehuimin,

Thank you for your time to share your comments with us on TripAdvisor. We are glad that you find the room clean and comfortable, and check-in was up to speed.

We apologise for the areas you have mentioned that were not up to your expectation. We would like to share with you that, if you encounter any TV problem on your next stay with us, you can just give our Front Desk a call and we will send our staff to rectify the matter immediately. Our Engineering team is, at the same time, in the process of removing the TV frames, which may be one possible factor affecting the programme reception, on a floor-by-floor basis. Similarly, our Housekeeping team is going through the process of replacing the bed covers with new ones to further enhance the comfort of our guests.

Once again, the teams greatly appreciate your feedback and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to our hotel in the near future.

Hotel is located bit far from orchard, but its just about 10mins bus drive from orchard. There is a bus stop right in front of the hotel and there are few bus going to orchard, suntec city and bugis area. Bus 123/16 was my favorite as it will take you to behind 313 sommerset shopping mall in central orchard.

I have stayed in the roberston quey Furama hotel in summer last year, and found the Riverview is much better.

Got a deluxe room on 12th floor, room was clean, quiet small, comfortable bed, unfortunately the room had a weird smell of cigarette smoke coming from the bathroom. My staff got a superior room on lower floor also experienced the same scent of smell. I think the hotel may need to take a look at this seriously.

Wi-Fi was quick, breakfast was great, and the male reception staff were friendly. Overall I find this hotel service very good and accommodating to your need.

There are few good restaurant / bar available behind the hotel across the river and mostly open afterdark til midnight. There is an indian moslem restaurant around 300m to the right from the hotel, and there is a store in the gas station 100m to the left of the hotel, where you can find snacks and drinks.

Dear kkdoo,

Many thanks for your kind words about your stay and the service you received from our teams. We are very grateful that you give us this opportunity to share your comments with the staff involved and thank them for the good efforts. This will surely encourage them to keep up their good work.

We are glad that you like the hotel location and the shopping options close by. Great World City is another shopping mall near Riverview Hotel that our guests find it convenient to go as it is only around 10 minutes’ walk away.

Please accept our sincere apologies on the area you have mentioned and we are looking into it and take any required necessary steps. We would like to share with you that, while our housekeeping team freshen up all guestrooms with air fresheners daily when they make up the rooms and deploy ionisers (electronic air fresheners) in rooms with smoke smell, unfortunately sometimes the fresh air exchange to all rooms provided through the air conditioning and bathroom exhaust system also allows some smoke smell to travel from our smoking floors to other areas. We are working on this issue and hope to have even better news for you shortly.

Once again, thank you very much for your comments and we hope you have arrived home or at your next destination safely and in comfort by now. Everyone here hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Riverview Hotel on your next trip to Singapore.

It is not worth the money and def no 4Star experience but that seems to be the problem of many hotels in Singapore. Rooms need renovation including the very noisy a/c (even changed our room at 1 am as the noise kept waking us up), staff at reception not very friendly nor service orientated and there is no MRT station close by. Stayed there for 2 nights and paid 270 USD for the double room and this was already called a "Weekend Special Price". Rooms are very small but clean. When paying 80 USD per room per night you would expect such a standard but not for the money we have paid.

Dear Sabsi83,

Many thanks for your feedback on TripAdvisor. Please accept our sincere apologies for the areas you have mentioned that were not up to your expectations. Your comments have been shared with the respective department heads to evaluate and take any relevant actions, if needed.

We would like to share that, with a bus-stop just outside and another opposite the hotel, a number of MRT stations - Clarke Quay, Chinatown, Tiong Bahru, Somerset, Orchard and Dhoby Ghaut - are only around 5 to 10 minutes bus ride (or 4 to 8 bus-stops) away. The affordable public bus services that go to these stations from the bus-stops arrive at frequent intervals and they also go to many popular venues in Singapore, such as the well-known Orchard Road shopping belt, Little India, Chinatown, Raffles Place and Shenton Way. In addition, we have a daily free shuttle bus service that goes to Orchard Road and Clarke Quay (at one of the entrance to Clarke Quay MRT Station)/Chinatown at regular timings.

With regard to the room rate, this is comparable to a similar class hotel in the riverside vicinity. However, we are pleased to add that, if you visit our hotel’s official website, there are several packages with different add-ons for you to choose from.

On the size of the hotel rooms, at around 23-25 square metres, they are actually considered to be above the average room size of 4-star hotels in Singapore. Also, as part of our efforts to enhance the rooms, 3 floors of carpets have been replaced with a more user and eye-friendly design. More floors will follow soon.

Once again, thank you for your comments and we hope to see you again when you are in this part of the region in the future.
