My wife and I stayed here for three nights in July of 2006 as part of a round the world trip, and were largely very happy with our experience.
The lobby was typical of many Shangri-La hotels – huge and marble with lots of comfortable sofas. The staff were beautifully dressed and willing to help in the efficient way in which is typical in Singapore.
Our check-in was swift, and we were offered an upgrade – at a cost – which we turned down. Our room was large and nicely decorated, and both it and the bathroom had all that we required, including an ironing board.
The breakfast buffet was brilliant – selections of food from all around the world. We also enjoyed a drink in both the Lobby Bar and in Blu on the top floor. Note that the drinks are VERY expensive – a beer and a glass of white wine was in excess of US$20. The view from the top floor, and indeed from the room, was not spectacular, and only offered a very limited view of the city skyline in the distance.
My only real gripe is about the location. It is at the top end of Orchard Road, and it is a fifteen minute walk to the MTR station. From here it is another twenty or more minutes to the ‘downtown area’ and Chinatown. Including for buying tickets and waiting on a train, it could take you nearly an hour to make it from your room to, say, the nearest MTR to the Merlion and Raffles Plaza. For that reason, if time was very precious and you only had a couple of days in the city, then I would suggest booking another hotel.
When in Singapore I recommend having a drink and throwing peanut shells on the floor in the Long Bar of Raffles Hotel, spending an evening at the Night Safari, and hitting Chinatown for some satay washed down with an ice cold Tiger beer. If you have a few days to spare and you want some rest and relaxation, then I would suggest heading for the Indonesian island of Bintan, only forty-five minutes from Singapore by catamaran – it really is a tropical paradise. The Angsana Resort & Spa comes highly recommended.
I would recommend the Shangri-La, but simply because of its location, we would more than likely stay closer to the centre on a return visit.
