“A superb stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2006

My wife and I stayed here for three nights in July of 2006 as part of a round the world trip, and were largely very happy with our experience.

The lobby was typical of many Shangri-La hotels – huge and marble with lots of comfortable sofas. The staff were beautifully dressed and willing to help in the efficient way in which is typical in Singapore.

Our check-in was swift, and we were offered an upgrade – at a cost – which we turned down. Our room was large and nicely decorated, and both it and the bathroom had all that we required, including an ironing board.

The breakfast buffet was brilliant – selections of food from all around the world. We also enjoyed a drink in both the Lobby Bar and in Blu on the top floor. Note that the drinks are VERY expensive – a beer and a glass of white wine was in excess of US$20. The view from the top floor, and indeed from the room, was not spectacular, and only offered a very limited view of the city skyline in the distance.

My only real gripe is about the location. It is at the top end of Orchard Road, and it is a fifteen minute walk to the MTR station. From here it is another twenty or more minutes to the ‘downtown area’ and Chinatown. Including for buying tickets and waiting on a train, it could take you nearly an hour to make it from your room to, say, the nearest MTR to the Merlion and Raffles Plaza. For that reason, if time was very precious and you only had a couple of days in the city, then I would suggest booking another hotel.

When in Singapore I recommend having a drink and throwing peanut shells on the floor in the Long Bar of Raffles Hotel, spending an evening at the Night Safari, and hitting Chinatown for some satay washed down with an ice cold Tiger beer. If you have a few days to spare and you want some rest and relaxation, then I would suggest heading for the Indonesian island of Bintan, only forty-five minutes from Singapore by catamaran – it really is a tropical paradise. The Angsana Resort & Spa comes highly recommended.

I would recommend the Shangri-La, but simply because of its location, we would more than likely stay closer to the centre on a return visit.

Fantastic Hotel You must stay here. Just going on to Bali now after 4 days at the Shangri La and we do not want to leave. The staff are superb and will really go out of their way to make your stay as smooth as possible. We upgraded to the Tower Wing for an Extra $65 per night and it is worth it. Five Star Hotel all round. Try the buffet lunch at the Lime you will not be disapointed !

My husband booked the Shangri-la for my birthday. My first impression of the hotel was "wow". As we checked in they were already aware it was my birthday and couldnt do enough to help. We were offered a upgrade to the Valley wing for £40. This was a bargain as it included free snacks, tea, coffee and champagne all day and breakfast.

We were lucky enough to be given one of the only rooms with a balcony which gave us a stunning view of singapare and the pool area. Our room was massive with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. The best part of the room was the rainfall shower, it was absolutely amazing.

As we upgraded to the Valley Wing we were given snacks all day, this was really worth it, we sat in the lobby most afternoon and enjoyed the delicious snack which kept being refilled. Breakfast was also a fantastic experience, each table had a personal waiter who brought you anything you requested. They were also very knowledgable about singapore and gave some great advice on sightseeing.

The hotel was very close to Orchard Road and you could walk there quite easily.

Overall, i have to say this is one of the best hotels I have stayed in, I have been to the Four Seasons and Shangri-la wins hands down!

I stayed at Shangri La this August with my husband. The hotel is really beautiful. We stayed in the Garden Wing which has a tropical theme, all the rooms come with a balcony, ours was over looking immaculate gardens and the pool, we were given a corner suite which had an extended balcony which was worth it as it was big enough for the sun loungers and had small dining area which would be ideal for a in room service meal. We were celebrating our first wedding anniversary and the friendly reception staff noticed from my passport that it was also my birthday, the following morning the hotel sent up a birthday card, a box of complimentary chocolates and wine, in addition to the complimentary fruit basket we already had, I thought that was a really nice touch.

Our breakfast was included which was served at The Line Restaurant in a buffet style, which is truly amazing. Their lunch and dinner choices were fantastic too. They had every type of cuisine imaginable.

The main shopping area of Orchard Road is about a 15mins walk away, however if it is too hot to walk the Hotel offers a complimentary bus shuttle service every hour which takes you straight to one of the main shopping malls on Orchard Road.

There is a really nice piano bar serving drinks to the sound of a live mellow singer and there is a Blu Restaurant on the 25th floor which has an amazing panoramic view of the Singapore skyline- both well worth a visit.

The only criticism was that that Hotel did not appear to have an ATM, the nearest ones were on orchard Road.

Overall we had a fantastic stay, the hotel staff are really friendly and cannot do enough, the hotel is very luxurious and well worth a visit.

This hotel was wonderfull and worth every penny!! Unbelievable service, rooms were spacios and a lot of luxury things (like TV in the bathroom so that You can take a bath and watch TV at the same time...). There was even a complementary champagnebar in the luxurious lobby. You could get champagne and other drinks for free throughout the day! They served also snacs and canapes during the afternoon and evening. Live harp music every night etc. This hotel is truly worth the name Shangri La! We stayed in the Valley Wing which is more luxurious than the Garden or Tower Wing. In the inner court there were a green area with palmtrees etc. in the middle of which there was an enourmous pool and a jacuzzi for about 6-8 people. And the breakfast was unbelievable, the coffee and juices best I've ever tasted. There was also a huge table full of all kinds of fruits; most of which I didn't even know by name. Delicious! You also got to choose a warm plate of scrambled eggs, french toast, japanese breakfast etc. Even the location was good, quite near the Orchard Road but still by a quiet side street so that the traffic didn't disturbe. Recommend especially to honeymooners or couples looking for a luxurious and relaxing stay in Singapore.

We had free stop-over on our honeymoon and decided to stay here at the Shangri-La
Service:
Very friendly staff and extremely attentive.
Rooms:
Good size suites with a view overlooking the city.
Location:
Good. Rather misleading as you not actually on Orchard Road itself. You would need to get the courtesy bus in or go by back (10mins)
Breakfast:
The choice is incredible. We ate in the club lounge for the first morning and then decided to boycott it in preference to the great atmosphere and vast selection of cuisine in the main restaurant below.

Hi,

Had four night stay in July, and were bowled over by the opulence, style, service and friendliness of the hotel. It was my wifes birthday whilst we were there, and we returned from a trip to find wine, chocolates and fruit i the room with a letter/card from guest relations.

Breakfasts awesome......a superb yoghurt bar being a highlight.

Love to return
