I stayed with my wife and two sons at the Shangri-la while I was taking some training courses in Singapore. We were able to secure a great rate that included breakfast and internet access. These rooms were designated as Horizon Club rooms.
When we arrived, we were a bit surprised at how small our room was. Even though we received a great rate with favorable ammenities, I would have expected a larger room.
Other thoughts on the room:
- Nice bed
- 3 pieces of fruit offered per day - nice touch.
- 2 bottles of water at no charge (will provide more if asked).
- Shower was a bit dated along with the rest of the bathroom. Not a huge deal though.
- Can't turn on the bathroom lights in the evening because there is a fancy glass divider separating the room from the bathroom - hence anyone who is sleep, will be bothered by the light.
- Door to bathroom and shower have awkward entrances. Bathroom door crowds bath area and shower door opens inward when the shower is already cramped enough.
- Nice flat screen tv. Limited channels to watch, but you should be out exploring anyways.
- A/C works very well.
- Wierd lighting system from the different wall mounts that work sometimes and other times drive you crazy.
On to the rest of the hotel. With the rate we received, breakfast was included. We had the choice to either dine at a restaurant called the Line or the Horizon Club lounge/The Blu. Both had excellent breakfast buffets and the attendants/chefs/waiters/etc, were all very helpful and courteous. The difference between the two is that the Line is a larger brunch location with more variety, but has a busier atmosphere compared to the Horizon Club lounge/The Blu where it's a lot quieter and private but a smaller variety of food. I recommend both of them depending on how you feel in the morning. I will say that the Horizon Club/The Blu has a great view from atop of the hotel as you eat.
Some of the other great features of the hotel that we recognized are listed below:
- They have a great gym with various cardio equipment, all in one type weight machines, smith machine, and free weights. I was impressed.
- Pool is excellent for children and adults. Has two child pools that are great for your little ones.
- Always many staff members around to help you at a moment's notice. Very helpful and courteous staff.
On one occasion, we ordered room service and they sent up the wrong order for my wife and my portion. They didn't charge us for our son's meal and corrected the order promptly.
Now, I will remind you that this is a five star hotel so you will run into those who believe they are more important than everyone else and they act accordingly. My wife and I didn't let them get to us and just smiled and kept going. Again, I am talking about hotel guests, not the staff.
As I read before we came, this hotel is near the Orchard shopping area. It's about a ten minute walk, but not a bad walk at all. Before we came, we read about the walk and thought we would be walking a great deal, not the case at all. Its a very good location off the beaten path. Not as central as other hotels, but not a negative either.
So overall, not a bad hotel at all. We enjoyed ourselves and the breakfast brunch will linger in our minds.
