“Great hotel to stay on business trips”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

Great hotel. Huge lobby. Very friendly staff, always smiling and helpful and very efficient, like most of Singapore. I reached early and they offered the use of the Health Club while I waited for my room. That was a great way to freshen up after the flight from Mumbai. Free wi-fi which worked really well ... every day I could connect to my office using Facetime. I ate in the room and at the restaurant below lobby level and always found the food good. Its an expensive hotel but worth every dollar.

Room Tip: My experience was great. Just ask the staff for what you want they will most likely surprise you.

Walking in to the hotel reception from steamy Singapore for the first time was like walking into a chilled Aladdin's Cave.

Checking in was swift and it opened up the door to a well equipped room, restaurants that serve Michelin starred food morning noon and night from all corners of the world to match the wide range of nationalities that choose to stay at the hotel.

Despite being set in crowded Singapore, once you leave the confines of the cool hotel building and enter the outdoor pool area, it is as though you have moved into the local countryside with birds flying in and out of the trees and bushes and the squirrels jumping from branch to branch. Yet 7 minutes walk from the hotel main entrance is one of the main arterial roads of Singapore lined with air conditioned shopping malls for which Singapore is famed.

More important than the buildings was the staff, all of whom spoke excellent English and I suspect many other languages. Without exception all members staff we met went out of their way to make our stay trouble free and enjoyable

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the pool area

This place is like home for me in Singapore. After trying many different hotels, I have now standardised on the Shang. The rooms might be a little dated, but always comfortable and then that's what homes are supposed to feel like right? The service is par excellence and you are always made to feel extremely welcome. The staff at the executive lounge take things to another level altogether!

Room Tip: Horizon Club room, preferably a Premier

My partner and I are Shangri-la fans. This was our 5th different hotel in the chain and the 6th stay at a Shangri-la. As the first of the chain's hotels one expects a true "Flagship" experience. Not so much...

We booked a room in the Valley Wing so as to ensure a slightly quieter and more discreet experience. The V.W. doesn't come close to the sheer perfection of the Krung Thep wing at the Shangri-la in Bangkok!
The staff really tries very hard and they're obviously very good but there are shortcomings. Having to search through drawers for napkins and/or cutlery due to a shortage during service is NOT what one would expect. Not being able to find someone in a position to help, even more so.
The Valley Wing is also in dire need of its own pool. The hotel pool is a bit of a free for all and very much a watery crêche. Great fun to watch the little kiddies getting up to all sorts of crazy stuff but it gets old very quickly. A chap likes a bit of peace and quiet when on holiday.
There is a totally pointless and unused golfing area in front of the Valley Wing. Didn't see anyone using it once during our 4 day stay. I suggest digging a hole and building a dedicated quiet pool area for the V.W.
Afternoon tea is adequate, not the best. The canapés are a little wishy washy. The Moët flows enough to take one's attention off the meagre selection of eats on display in the Summit Room, though.
Breakfasts are wonderful, the rooms in the V.W. are wonderful and the staff's willingness to be of assistance is also very pleasing. Still, the experience lacks a bit of polish and (the V.W. in particular) needs to offer a bit more to make it what people expect.
Would I suggest staying in the V.W? Yes!
Is it the best product on offer within the Shangri-la group? No. For that you need to travel to HK or Bangkok.

the hospitality is great, the service is amazing the rooms are awesome! The location is hard to beat and I can't really say enough good things about it. You get a warm pot of tea as a gift and fresh fruit everyday delivered to the room. I stayed in the tower that has a balcony and the view was killer. For the cost I can see how some might be wary but the price in Singapore is going up, up up! This was cheaper than Marina Bay Sands and I think the hotel and service is much better. I strongly recommend

Room Tip: Always ask if they have upgrades.
