“Singapore Mandarin not a good advert for a great chain”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013 via mobile

Received a nice upgrade to a harbour-view room, with a lovely view from the Fullerton to the Marina Bay Sands with its crazy "ark" boat on the roof But... room-service breakfast 20 mins later than promised two days in a row, promised airport taxi never arrives and a general less-than-stellar service attitude pervades. Spectacular atrium but the gloss cannot hide a dated interior design. Other 5-stars in Singapore preferred.

Our transfer from the airport to the hotel was delayed as we were given a BMW instead of the shuttle bus so when we arrived the reception staff were very apologetic that our room had to be changed and we were upgraded to a suite! We couldn't believe it - flowers, fruit bowl, sitting room, balcony and the biggest bathtub with a range of bath luxuries to indulge in. We looked toward the Marina Bay Sands which is architecturally impossible to believe and probably familiar to many by now. Our view also included the bay with the ships at anchor and the many skyscrapers across the harbour. The $20 entrance to the viewing deck is well worth it and provides a good overview of the adjacent "gardens". The elevated walkway from the Mandarin side of the harbour to the Marina Bay Sands was designed by an Australian and the shopping centre within the complex includes a gondola and canal! with very high end shopping. The new garden with its steel trees is well worth a visit, the MRT is immaculate, on time an arrives just where you want to go. China Town was preparing for Luna New Year an everyone was happy, the street decorations outstanding depicting the Year of the Snake winding overhead. High Tea at Raffles, nearby to the Mandarin is memorable even for those not into history and tradition. The pool at the Mandarin only ever had 6 people at the most so a day lounging in the curtained cabanas with a club sandwich for lunch was a day well spent. We began the river boat trip at Clark Key and covered the whole bay, up close to the Marina Bay Sands and the history commentary explained the buildings lining the river. There is also a bus tour of what remains of the historic parts of Singapore which haven't been demolished.
The Mandarin has several restaurants - we ate at La Dolce Vita beside the pool and although the bill was a big surprise it still the one we remember for the magic of the food and surroundings. The breakfasts are by far the classiest in town. We needed to send a fax and the business centre staff took care of everything for very little cost.

We will return to the Mandarin as soon as we can

I stay in Singapore 75+ nights a year and tried most of the hotels. I decided to try the MO to see if it was really all that. Check in was fine, I booked a club room facing the harbor. The room itself was average I'd say, nothing to rave about. The bathroom not all that big. The shower is tiny. The bed was comfortable but the A/C was not that good. I don't know, I was expecting this WOW factor for the room but it did not have it.

Now the club lounge is one of the best I have seen in the world. No question it was fantastic and well worth the money spent. My advice get club access. The pool area is very nice and you have great views of downtown Singapore.

Overall its a nice hotel.

Room Tip: Get club access, its probably one of the best lounges in the world.

I usually love staying in Mandarin Oriental Hotels for the amazing service and ambience. This one had good service but the building is dated and pretty awful. It really does detract from a 5 Star experience. I would urge the group to move (easier said than done). The rate was reasonable though and probably reflects this.

Room Tip: Go for a high floor

This hotel overlooks the bay and I had a front room that gave a panoramic view. Standard rooms are also good, spacious and well furnished. The service was fantastic - staff were unbelievable helping me sort out problems with a delayed flight home. The hotel has 3 restaurants but the italian was first class. Prices were high, especially wine, but this was at least Michelin Star standard. There is a roof pool next to the restaurant which looked divine although I did not get time to sample it.

The hotel is within walking distance of the gardens on the Bay and Raffles ( just).

Room Tip: Go for an upgrade to get a room overlooking the bay if you can possibly afford it

Made a reservation at a rate of over 600S$ a night for Chinese New Year in club Floor, but it went from bad to worse within hours of our arrival.
Over 1h to check-in, being ignored by the front office supervisor, manager was no-where to be seen, requested to talk to the resident manager and GM but request was ignored.
Finally after repeated request Front Office manager came and was given us an horrible impression of Mandarin hotel. Since when a guest is asked what can the hotel do to make it better? When is a manager is taught to ignore my fiancée while she is talking to him? We finally reach our rooms almost two hours after we arrived, the rooms had not been checked by anyone. TV was not working, when call the office to have it fix they send a Duty Manager who did not even apologized, had to ask AGAIN to talk to the GM to get the acting resident manager to call FINALLY...
Discussed the issue with him, he did handled it better, made sure our service in the breakfast every morning would be great and it was, but shouldn't it be a regular service?
Overall, not a great stay, only a good manager there and he left few days later... Don't think I would go back to Mandarin unless I heard that drastic changes and improvement were made.

We spent 5 nights in the Suite (Harbor Facing), and we were delighted to be accommodated on the highest level.

The only set-back was perhaps due to the housekeeping's management. We had to request for bath amenities even when they were supposed to be there, but not there...on a daily basis.

The place was neat and clean, but perhaps management should spend time reviewing the status of the furniture and such. It does give visitors a 'wow' feeling upon entering, but then when you stumble upon details, it is not that nice with wardrobe doors not closing properly, side bed tables with cracks along the adjoining wall...

But still the experience was okay as the personnel over at the front desk area were very helpful.

Overall, traveling with young children, this hotel does some good with a variety of children TV programs. More suited for traveling adults, business, etc.

Room Tip: Harbor facing meant that you get to have a straight good view of the floating platform, at '2pm...
