The Meritus Mandarin is centrally located along Orchard Road. The lobby is quite busy but you get attended to quickly. Receptionists were attentive - they made sure everyone was attended to at the soonest possible moment. The concierge was very helpful - we made a reservation through them and they helped us get to the restaurant which was located nearby but in an area which was confusing to get to. (Tip: if you're going some place, ask your concierge to print a map or indicate on a map how to get there - especially if it's nearby. Our destination was 3-5 minutes from the hotel but the cab brought us around and around so we ended up paying more than we should have.)
The rooms are very spacious. We booked a deluxe room through our travel agent. We had a 1yr 8mo baby with us and there was enough room for a crib, our 2 luggages and space for our baby to run around. There were 2 sinks, a bathtub - it was a spacious bathroom. Lights were controlled digitally with the press of a button. There were blackout curtains to block out the sunlight.
Try the chicken rice from chatterbox - the hotel's restaurant. They claim that it's an award-winning dish and I totally agree! Even my little picky eater loved it. (Tip: If you order room service from chatterbox, they charge an extra SD15 or so per dish. If you mind the additional SD15 per dish, order it from the room and then go pick it up yourself and you can eat it in the room. They provide disposable tupperware and utensils.)
Our room was between our brother's room and our aunt's room. Our baby would cry now and then in the middle night and we asked them if they heard anything. They said they didn't hear anything at all. I guess that means their rooms are sound-proofed well enough.
Renovations are going on but I think they're doing their best to keep the noise level at a minimum. I was once awakened by a banging noise around 8-ish in the morning but it didn't last long. This is probably the best time to book with them since they probably can't demand a full price yet considering the construction and what a deterent that is to most travellers. But seriously, it isn't bad at all.
