“Pleasantly suprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2010

This hotel started off well for me. I had not requested a room for an early occupancy, but they made one available for me anyway. I really appreciated this as i had just got off a long flight from dubai and was tired and needed a shower and 40 winks. The hotel obliged with a nice cool room which was quite big, well appointed and very quiet and comfortable. The hotel is not awash with facilities but it is pleasant and was convenient for where i was going. I liked it. It is quite old now, but up to scratch in most respects. While it was probably a tall building in the 1970s, it is now diminutive compared to the glass edifices all around it. Having said that it is near shopping malls and has some nice shop houses and restaurants in the area. Not a bad spot at all

Having stayed at numerous 5 * hotels in Singapore we were generally disappointed with our first impression of the hotel. The hotel looks and feels like it needs a revamp to bring it up to the standard of other 5 star hotels.

Location: Again we were not happy with the location as it’s too far away from Orchard Road and the shops. We took cabs everywhere as we didn’t feel like catching trains.

Check in- Everything went accordingly to plan and the staff were efficient and friendly.

Room – Our room was very spacious similar size to a suite. The room had a large king size bed, lounge suite and dining table. We were highly impressed with the size of the room. The bathroom was again roomy with a separate walk in shower and bath. However, we thought it did need an urgent revamp to give it a more modern feel.

We had problems with the hot water and had to wait at least 10mins before it would heat up.

Facilities – The pool is just okay and not very welcoming again work needs to be done around the swimming pool area to make it more attractive. There is a good size gym and spa facility.

Dining – We thought the breakfast to be average compared to other hotels and were disappointed with the choices on offer. We also dined in the Cantonese restaurant which we found to be okay.

Overall : The staff were very helpful and friendly but overall we thought the InterContinental Hotel to be just average regarding the standard of the rooms to the price we paid and the location poor.

Dear Ellemay,

Thank you for drawing our attention to your recent stay with us.
Whilst your overall stay experience had some positive aspects of a smooth check-in, spacious room and friendliness of our staff, we take serious note of your recommendations and will most certainly review them for continuous improvements. At the same time we would like to mention that we do have plans to begin refurbishment of our popular Shop-house rooms by the end of this year.

We truly appreciate the time that you have invested in providing us with constructive comments.

This is a fanatasic hotel if you have very deep pockets. I only stayed here for 1 night so the financial pain was bearable. The rooms are large, luxurious and super clean - i note joking to mate that i could eat my dinner off the floor! The concierge was very helpful directing us to great eateries and finding me a public golf course on short notice (esp given it was Chinese New Year which is equal to xmas for Singaporeans!). The only negative i have was its location. Its a good 20 min walk to Orchard Road which can be uncomfortable in the heat.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2010

We just stayed in Singapore for 3 nights at intercontinental on our way back from the Maldives.
The location of the hotel is fantastic as it is attached to the Bugis junction shopping mall and has acccess to Bugis MRT station. We booked a kingsize shophouse room and were allocated a room on level 3. The shophouse room cost more than some and we expected it to be a good standard.
We found the room size to be adequate. The bed was extremely comfortable and we had great nights sleep.
On the down side the Shophouse room was very noisy. Every morning there was drilling noise from 0900-1100 from the shopping centre. One night there was hammering and construction noise well after midnight. People noise is also very evident until about 2300 every night (there is a cafe/restaurant directly below rooms).
On the first day we rang down to reception to express concern about the noise and asked whether they had a quieter room on a higher level. We were told that someone would ring back in 5 min. 40 min later we had not received a call so went down to reception to speak with them in person. We said that we were happy to pay to upgrade to another room. The woman at front reception was quite indifferent and offered a room on higher level which would have been equal to downgrade. Since we had prepaid for accomodation we decided that this was not an acceptable option and stayed where we were. We understand that the hotel has no control over upgrades/construction work carried out by the shopping centre but believe that guests should be informed that this can occur at any time.
We dealt with Eugene at concierge almost every morning and he was very helpful in tips for getting around and restaurant recommendations!! We thought that he offered exceptional service as compared to front desk.
We enjoyed buffet breakfast every morning and found the staff in restaurant very efficient. There was a wide variety of food to enjoy and the coffee was good.
Overall - hotel great location. Service was a bit hit and miss. If you stay I don't recommend shophouse rooms. We would definitely try another hotel next time.

Dear Cintrus,

Thank you for the feedback on your recent stay with us received via Tripadvisor.

We are delighted that your overall stay experience with us was good and appreciate your constructive comments on improvements.

The shop-house rooms are in fact part of the original Bugis street establishment in the early 1960s.The manner in which these original shop-houses are connected to the main hotel is via the shopping mall make them an authentic experience but noisy during the day as the shops in the mall open up. All the tenants in the mall are private owners of the business therein and at times not particularly sensitive to the hotel. However, we do continue to work with the management of the mall requesting them to keep noise generation at the lowest. Thank you for understanding that the hotel has no control at all on their plans of drilling/construction and we are at times taken by complete surprise.

At the same time please allow me to apologize for the insensitivity presented by our Front desk staff on your request to move to a higher floor in a quieter part of the hotel. This was partly due to the fact that the hotel was running a full house and locating a quiet room was a challenge.

We thank you once again for your constructive comments and will continue improving the service provided by our team. We hope that you will return to stay with us again in the future. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly at +65-6338 7600 for assistance.

With best wishes and kind regards,

We stayed here with our 2yo son and parents in a separate room directly accross the hall. Plenty of space for roll out bed and was able to be a bit separate from the King bed. We stayed in a club room which enabled us plenty of space.
The staff were excellent and very very friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. Thanks Anna and Emmanuel. Everyone loved our son and spent time talking to him. Plastic cutlery was arranged as well as a highchair.
The lounge was great for relaxing in and spending time together outside our room(s). It More comfortable than 5 of us in a room and wonderful food.
I highly reccommend this hotel for families. Especially the club rooms. The MRT is close by as is a cold storage for any extra snacks.
The pool area is basic but still very nice. More for lounging by than children playing but it is ok. There is a childrens pool .
We will be back

We stayed here before and were excited to stay again if only for one stopover night. Location is excellent and the bedrooms are gorgeous - the beds have those undersheet duvet things that exude luxury. Buffet is full of options and the pool lovely with the most beautiful day beds to lie on. Staff friendly and helpful. Just love the guys who open the main door and call the taxis.
