“Excellent - the best coffee in Singapore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2012

As soon as I get off the plane, I head to the plain!! This is a great cafe - it has a nice vibe, the staff are lovely and the coffee is a lot better than some I've had in Melbourne. It is a bit annoying they don't have WIFI, but the place does get so busy at lunchtime I can see it could become a bit of a problem. But, actually, it was kinda nice not to be wired in for half an hour or so - read the paper and watch the world go by.

“Tries to be like a Melbourne cafe, and fails.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2012

Plain lives up to its name admirably. The place is supposed to be modelled on a Melbourne Cafe and even has Melbourne papers there. However, it fails to live up to that promise, which is a shame.

They don't have wifi and most disappointingly of all they have a completely ridiculous and rather pointless policy of not allowing customers to connect digital devices to their power sockets. To me this served as a road block and ensured that not only did I drink up and leave quickly, but that I will never return.

I work remotely and therefore often use my laptop in cafes. I am a considerate laptop user and make sure that I don't spread or sit there for hours drinking one drink. I completely appreciate the burden inconsiderate laptop users can be on a cafe, but to be fair EVERY cafe worth anything in Melbourne deals with this so I'm quite sure Plain could find a way to deal with it to.

The staff are friendly, the coffee is good, but the place doesn't have an 'edge' to it and sadly therefore does indeed feel rather plain.

“Best espresso coffee in Singapore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2012

Without a doubt this laid back cafe serves the best coffee in Singapore. It also has a great selection of ciabatta and cakes. If you start to crave a decent espresso coffee whilst travelling through Singapore this is a MUST!

“Simply Over-rated...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2012

Boast as the "Melbourne Cafe in Singapore", The Plain offers any day breakfast.  The menu selection is very simple and focuses on a limited few choices.  Eg, Toasted Ciabatta with ham, cheese, tomato and poached egg, toasted ciabatta with vegemite, cheese and poached egg.

Price wise, $6.90 gets you one toasted ciabatta with above toppings and $12 gets you two servings of toasted ciabatta.  The pricing is definitely not on the value for money radar, a decent two person large serving meal would set you back at minimum $30 for breakfast.  This also includes coffee, which we found to be probably the most decent thing out of the whole experience.

Staff service was friendly and attentive.  Although, an aspect we were terribly disappointed in was the way staff handling of food. At a minimum, food tongs would be appropriate when selecting/ handling food from pre-prepared food from display shelves.

In addition, staff suffering from severe conjunctivitis should be refrain from handling and serving food without gloves!  This is fundamental health and safety issue.

On overall, if you are looking for appetising full breakfast that is value for money,we would not recommend this cafe ...
