“Overall Good!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

1st day reached the hostel, the staff (orang putih) was very friendly and kind enough to tell us where to find food and entertainment near this hostel.

we booked the quad-room which I think was good due to privacy for group travelling.

MRT (Lavender) very near, easy to travel.

other than that, the bad one was other staffs were not as friendly and kind. we called to ask for help to start the jacuzzi but they didn't show up til we manage to start it ourselves.

and our room is on high floor with just stairs... abit tiring walk up.

Room Tip: ask for lower floors room if you don't want to walk all the way up to your room!

The reception was terrible no one gave us some smile on their face... but if u are looking for clean, good room for budjet hotel I think this hostel os good enough!

It was really a disaster! We booked our room for 4 pax 1 month before our stay there. They charged the initial deposit to our credit card. When we arrived in that place, the frontdesk informed us that we have no room and our booking was overbooked! How come did that happened? We booked 1 month prior our stay! So we insisted to find a way and tell him that we badly needed a room! The frontdesk said he is not sure if he can give us room.We are so irritated! They did not even inform us in advance regarding the problem. We asked him to find another hostel for us but he can not find any vacant room near in the area. So we search in the internet and found cozycorner in bugis. We asked him to call that hostel and inquire if there is still room available and thank god there is. So we informed him that we will refund our initial deposit and he agreed.

When we returned to our country we found out that mercury charged us the full amount of our room (3D 2N)! They did not give us room and then they charged us?! What the heck! For everyone who is planning to stay there, please dont. MERCURY BACKPACKERS HOSTEL IS NOT GOOD!!

We made a booking for a room for 3 person (even with proof of booking) back in May 2013 for the first weekend of October 2013 only to be informed an hour before boarding our plane that our booking was not capture. Upon arrival at Mercury Backpackers and meeting up with Jake, he promised to give all 3 of us a complimentary stay on our next visit in December 2013. We trusted him and had to travel to others places to find accommodation for the 3 of us. We trusted him but only to find out 2 days later that we were almost charged 1 night for a no-show. Returned to meet Jake for clarification but he was not around and hence spoke to him over the phone. He mentioned that we won't be charged and we trusted him again. And to make sure the complimentary room he promised us in December 2013 is fulfilled, we made a booking on the spot. He mentioned that his system is down and will e-mail us once it is up.

Now we are back home, we e-mailed him for a follow-up only to be told that his system is still undergoing maintenance. Few days later to our horror, he took back his words saying only complimentary stay for 1 person for 1 single night.

We trusted Jake but now we found out that he only wanted to get rid of us and to save himself for any problem during our meet-up. All empty promises and causes us extra money in travelling, extra effort which almost caused us to sleep on the streets? Mercury Backpackers, just beyond awful your customer service is. Highly not recommended especially when the person is Jake!

Awful service! We booked more than a week in advance. One day before arrival, we sent them an email to remind them of our late check-in. They answered that they made a mistake in the booking process and that they don't have a room for us now. It was the Grand Prix weekend and we had so much trouble finding another affordable hostel. They didn't even offer us to help to find another place to stay. After urging them a lot, they finally booked us into another hostel. When we arrived there, the next surprise was waiting: they only booked us in for 1 night instead of 2! So we had to walk from hostel to hostel the next day, trying to find a place to sleep. Thanks for ruining our trip to Singapore, Mercury!

Knowing that we would be travelling over the F1 weekend in end-Sept, we booked 2 nights at Mercury more than 2 months in advance so that we could secure the promo deal. One week prior to our departure to Singapore, we sent multiple emails to the hotel to confirm the booking, but no reply was received!

Once we arrived, there were 2 staff at the counter, one was attending to another customer, while another staff just stood there idle, as if we were invisible. While waiting, we overheard the conversation between the customer & the staff. The staff told the customer rudely that they couldn't accommodate him because all rooms were taken, even though the customer had already made full payment via Agoda. The customer furiously demanded the hotel to call Agoda for explanation, but the hotel refused to do so & said that it was none of the hotel's business & the issue should be settled between the customer & Agoda.

At that time, we already had a bad feeling. Finally when it was our turn to check in, as expected no room was reserved for us. Mercury referred us to another hostel closeby & promised that same room type & rate would be available, but we would have to call Agoda ourselves for refund. We were so tired from the travelling, so we accepted the offer. To our disappointment, there were only dorm beds available at the recommended hostel & the rate was double what we have paid via Agoda.

Due to the F1 weekend, it was tremendously difficult for us to find a decent room within our budget at such last minute. Luckily we have friends in the city who kindly put us up in their home for the short trip.

After the trip, we called Agoda to demand for refund. Agoda promised to process the refund within 7-10 days after their clarification with the hotel & would send an email for refund notification. However no words were heard in the next 7 days, we made another call & Agoda's response was no records of our previous refund request were found. So they went through another clarification with Mercury, and Mercury said they did check us in for that 2 nights!

Now Agoda promised a further investigation, we are still waiting for an answer! Looks to us Mercury is pushing all responsibilities to Agoda. Most likely they sold their rooms to other guests who paid regular price, while we who paid promo price were just shoo-ed away.

The customer service & professionalism of the management is very questionable!
