“Tiny rooms.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

The hotel was easy to find, just down the road from the MRT and the street names are clearly marked. Check in was fast but the bell hop hung around in our room awkwardly, I believe he was waiting to be tipped.
We had Scholar room, 233, not a good place if you require natural light to keep your body clock in check as theres no windows. The room is small, its hard to move around with two suitcases always in the way. Not enough room to stretch out your arms.
The shower flooded the whole bathroom, which stayed wet the whole time.
The sleep quality was good, with a comfortable bed and free fast wifi in the room.
The breakfast is your typical cheap and nasty feed of powerded eggs and spam bacon, the OJ was good though!
Check out was quick and easy.
Overall it was an average stay, saved by the fact of the free wifi. If you dont need much space or daylight (perfect for a single traveller) this place in the heart of China town is good for you ... on the other hand, it isnt very family friendly.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your feedback and noted some postive points about Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen.

We recognize that some of our rooms are small and to increase guest comfort, we would encourage guests to use the lobby and stage area which are very quiet and conducive, and enjoy our full day complimentary coffee, tea and wi-fi service. However, we do have others Santa Grand hotels in chain like Santa Grand Hotel Bugis or Santa Grand Hotel East Coast situated in other heritage area of Singapore to meet the diverse need of our customers. You may want to consider it for your next visit and we will be pleased to recommend different room category which is more spacious.

Once again, thank you for sharing with us on TripAdvisor. We looking forward to welcoming you back soon.

Regards,
Hotel Managment Team

This hotel is situated in the china town district of Singapore and offered amazing value for money, the building is extremely cool, it was once an Chinese opera house. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the shopping nearby is good. The rooms are quiet small but cerficiant for whats needed, they are very clean, quite modern and had a small couch, wardrobe and safe, if you only want to stay in your room they are probably too small but if you are going to site see they are fine. We had a 3rd floor room (top floor) with a window, (was called a "superior double") we also had a small balcony, there was a little noise at night but nothing that you wouldn't sleep through, they were setting up for chinese new year while we were there, cutting and grinding but we still slept fine. The beds were a little on the hard side but once again we slept fine, the linen we good. The rooms also have a switch to preheat the hot water and you need to remember to turn this on 5 minutes prior to wanting a shower. The air conditioning was great in the hot humid weather.

Room Tip: Get a 3rd floor room so your above the noise

I booked this room on Asiarooms. Ok, it was cheap (S$120 for a superior room with a 50% discount). But, really, it is super small. When you sit on the toilets, the shower rose is just above your head.

I though I was lucky to get a room with a balcony, but it ended up to be super noisy as it was on the street where people go and eat at any time of the day or the night.

Jeremy (the front desk manager) was super friendly and accommodating (thank you!).

Overall, it seems that the architects have put all their efforts on the lobby (an old Chinese opera; What a beautiful room) but bot on thé bedrooms.

Scarlet hotel (which is 2 blocks away on Erskine road) is so much more confortable for the same rate (if you did not get the discount)

Dear Valued Guest,

First of all, thank you for your patronage at Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen and thank you for your compliment on our staff-Jimmy. Your valuable compliments on him have been passed on to the top management to recognize his effort. We are sure that he will be even more motivated in maintaining a high level of customer service.

We recognize that some of our hotel rooms are small and situated in the heart of Chinatown, it can be troubling for some travellers but it reflect the heritage ambience of this area. However, this hotel may not be preferred by all travellers, we do hava other Santa Grand hotels in chain like Santa Grand Hotel Bugis or Santa Grand Hotel East Coast to meet the diverse needs of customers.

Thank you again for sharing your experience with us on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you back again in the near future.

The hotel is located right in Chinatown and there are a lot little stores and food stalls as soon as you walk out. But also so central we slept good, comfortable and quiet. The room was very tiny, there was no space to put luggage, just a small wardrobe. The Hotel self is very special, with red carpet an special lightning. I think, because the Hotel was in early times the Chinese Theater the rooms are so organized and it's a rare feeling to stay there. You just should enjoy it

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights with 8 year old twins. besides the shower being directly over the toilet, which for an 8 year old boy is genious, I have nothing negative to say about this place. Sure it is a bit noisy at night but that is all part of the charm. Situated right in the heart of China Town you can stand out on the balcony and people watch. The hotel is seeped in history and has such old world charm without being musty or smelly. Clean rooms and very helpful staff. Breakfast is simple but tasty.A wonderful stay all round!

Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen was very soulful and charming nicely renovated hotel that use d to be a chinese theater. Rooms were small but clean and new, staff very polite and friendly. Breakfast bouffét was included and acceptable. Location by the MRT station was great.

I'd love to stay at this place again if it wasn't so noisy. The hotel must do something about the isolation towards the chinatown alleys. My second floor french doors with windows offered no protection from any of the street noise; Laughter and street noises from carbage collectors at 1.30 AM, cars starting, people yelling, motorbikes were all incredibly loud. I had to laugh when they emptied a whole load of empty glass bottles to some kind of truck with metal container. The might as well thrown some large fire crackers under my bed. I think I only got some sleep 3AM-6AM and I was pretty exhausted the day after.

I'd give this hotel a 4, 4,5 if it wasnt for the noise. Now even a 3 seems generous. One must be able to get some sleep at a hotel.

We have had a wonderfull time in this hotel. The rooms are small and clean!!! The breakfast is simple and good.
The hotel in in the middle of the crowded Chinatown, which is a haven for food lovers, nearby the Metro.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a vieuw, because rhey have also rooms without windows.
