“Simple and clean hotel in a good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

Me and my wife stayed there this November 2012.
The hotel is exactly what we've expected based on the reviews and the Internet photos. It's very nice, simple and clean, it's tight but I guess you cannot expect something else in Chinatown. We had a Deluxe room and it was still tight so I can imagine what the standard rooms could be.
Other than that: very helpful staff, speak good English and do smile (something very important I can say).
Our room had an Air-con, a LCD TV, nice bathroom design and a small security box in the wardrobe. Also if you need they can store your bags down in the lobby.
The breakfast was simple but delicious.
Yes, Chinatown: noisy people down on the street till about 2 am, but when you're tired from the long sightseeing, you don't really pay attention to that:)
The location is great, very close to a MRT station and you could say it's fairly a walking distance from the downtown (Fulerton hotel, Marina Bay).
I would definitely recommend it to fellow travelers, young families (no kids for sure) and people who are in Singapore for the city, not for the hotel:)

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your great review. We are glad to know that you have enjoyed your stay with us. Indeed, it's easily accessible with MRT, shopping malls, Clark Quey and no doubt that Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen has a perfect location for leisure travellers.

However, we do have others Santa Grand hotels in chain like Santa Grand Hotel Bugis or Santa Grand Hotel East Coast situated in other heritage area of Singapore to meet the diverse need of our customers. You may want to consider it for your next visit.

Once again, thank you for sharing your experience with us on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

This hotel has a fascinating story being the old Chinese Opera house, whilst lying in my ridiculously tiny room i couldn't help wondering what was going on there 100 years before! There wasn't even enough space to put our bags down without tripping up or being able to open the door. The wardrobe was none existent with just a couple of hooks on the wall. For the size of the room the doorbell was as loud a church bell.

However, the location really was perfect for us, right in the heart of Chinatown - in my opinion the only part of Singapore left with any atmosphere or soul. The MRT was 5 minutes walk away and delicious food right outside the door.

One more thing...i really think the escalator salesman had a good day when he visited this hotel as there is a needless one plonked right in the middle of the hotel which is only barely wide enough to fit a suitcase on and is really noisy. What's wrong with a lift?

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your review. We are glad to know that you appreciated our interior deisgned and liked the hotel's location. Indeed, Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen has 100 over years history and is converted from an opera theatre to a modern and unique opera-style designed hotel.

We recognize that the hotel room size is small, and to increase guest comfort, we would encourage guests to use the lobby and stage area which are very quiet and conducive, and full day complimentary coffee and tea and free wifi service. However, we have taken your feedback and adjusted the sound volume of the door bell.

As regards of escalator in the building, it is part of the architectural conservation. As you know that Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen is a historical building and with the conservation guideline, all original structural and architectural elements shall be retained and restored. We hope for guest understanding and appreciation of the architecture and structure of this traditional buildings.

Once again, thank you for sharing your experience with us on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.

The hotel is strategically located in the heart of Chinatown with less than 200m walking to the Chinatown MRT. Design and decoration of the hotel are very nice, giving a feeling of inside a Beijing Opera theatre. My room is small, but I think is is adequate for a solo traveler like me. The only unsatisfactory point of this hotel is its in-room wifi, not work. However, wifi at the lobby, with a lot of sofas to sit, is very good.

Room was tiny, without a window and the flood flooded with water when you took a shower. Breakfast simple without much choice and balancing on bar stools is not comfortable. The location is perfect though.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your review. We are glad to know that you liked the hotel's location and the convenient. It is a perfect location for leisure travellers and easily accessible with MRT, shopping malls, Clark Quey.

In this historical building, we recognize that the room is small. However, if a spacious room with window is a guest prefrence, Deluxe room type would be our recommendation. In order to increase our guest comfort, we would also encourage our guest to enjoy full day complimentary coffee, tea and internet at our cosy lobby.

I went there with my husband and stayed there for 2 consecutive nights.

What i liked:
1. Have to say that their location is great, right in the center of China town.
2. Short walking distance to MRT station. Very convenient.
3. They provide free wifi, free breakfast, and free coffee/tea
4. Very helpful and friendly staffs.

What i dont enjoy:
1. The room is too small.
2. The bathroom is even worst. Once you are in there you can not move around much.
3. The windows in the room are not noise proof. I can hear the sound of people walking by, chit chatting down stair. Very annoying. I can't hardly get a good night sleep because of those noises.

Staffs are friendly. Breakfast was simple but acceptable for me. The standard room is really small, u hardly have space to move.. It was quite noisy as the hotel is located right beside one of the busiest street in the area. Love the lobby, nicely decorated.

There are two Santa grand on the same street so beware!!
Overall it's ok. Rooms and beds are really small, so share only with someone you care about.
Bathrooms a disaster, no edges for the shower so water everywhere all the time.
Internet did not workin the room for 2 days out of the three we where there. The guy at reception was very useful (not) trying to offer me a cable rather than checking wifi.

Room key never seemed to work, had to go down to reception every time.

Breakfast was VERY basic and if you go too late they run out of eggs.

They do not offer airport transport but are really close to MTR.

Area is eclectic and buzzing during weekends, with lots of eateries and lounges.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We are glad to know that generally you had a pleasant stay.

Indeed, we do have two Santa Grand Hotels located in the heart of Chinatown and both hotels are just within a minute walking distance. However, Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen is converted from an opera theatre to a modern and unique opera-style designed hotel. While Santa Grand Hotel Chinatown is featuring relaxed and open "Hacienda Personality" of the Spanish countryside. Both hotels have a very different character in order to meet the diverse need of customers and you may consider our Deluxe Room for your next visit, which is more spacious in size.

We appreciate your feedback about the Wifi and room key, we have since rectified it and take into a consideration of upgrading the system as well. It is through such feedback like yours that we can continue to improve ourselves and serve our guests with a high standard of service.

Once again, thank you for your valuable feedback and sharing your experience with us on Tripadvisor. We look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.
