“Overall pleasant..except for ants ;)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

I have stayed here for 3 nights.

Good about this hotel:
- Location..very very near to MRT station, imagine after a long day walking and you just feel like getting back to the hotel with the shortest route..this hotel location does help :) moreover, you wont get lost finding way back to your hotel or to the MRT station...it wasn't very hard to catch a cab outside the hotel too as I was able to catch one to the airport :)
- Food: lots of good food stalls or no worries on getting food...do try out the level 2 Yumcha...chinese dim sum
- Souvenirs: Lots of good bargains...good price souvenirs..
- Breakfast: I would say it was good continental breakfast..you get toast bread (DIY), eggs, sausages, baked beans, ham, fruits, orange juice, tea & coffee..although staying 3 nights with continuously same breakfast for three days still acceptable :) be prepare with the crowd but you will still be able to get a place to sit in or outside the cafe..
- Friendly..especially to uncle and auntie (elderly) serving breakfast in Cafe25 (Hotel Lai Chuen Yuen)..they are very kind, patient, helpful and friendly people..those aunties working in YumCha (level 2, Hotel Chinatown) are very nice people too...thumbs up for them!
- free wifi..good one :)

Not so good:
- cleanliness..there are ants in the room..guess likely due to the location? not one or two ants..but few at different location..
- small room..but wasn't really a big deal for me...imagine just nice for a double bed, a clothes hanging stand and a small side rectangular table..for a bigger room..get the deluxe room with slightly paying more..
- only one lift..you have to wait slight a lil longer for the lift...

and one thing about the noise...I'm a sensitive person towards noise and surprisingly I managed to sleep because the room does not face the main street and I am not very sure with the deluxe room condition..since the room is so small that you might hear your neighbor talking or the water pressure pumping..i didn't spend much time in the room..glad i barely hear them talking :)

do book with agoda or online, much cheaper than walking in..

Still I am quite happy with the hotel.its the ants that more bothering us and hope the hotel can improve in their cleanliness :)

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your great review. We are delighted to know that you have enjoyed your stay with us. We will definitely share your positive feedback with the team and your valuable compliment on our Bar 25 staffs.

As regards of ants issue, most likely due to the location as is near the food street and hawker stalls. However, all our hotels are contracted with a pest control company to safeguard and maintain the quality of the environment, and we have since stepped up the pest control activities. It is through such feedback like yours that we can continue to improve and serve our guests with a high standard of service and hygiene.

Once again, thank you for your sharing your experience with us on TripAdvisor. We look forward to have you back with us soon!

Regards,
Hotel Management Team

The doorbell of the room next door rang at regular intervals until 5am on our first night. That and the noise of the door opening and closing was very disruptive to our sleep. We noted during the following days that the "lady" in the room was regularly receiving guests. I would be interested to know if the hotel has a policy regarding the entry of non guests into it's premises, particularly late at night. Apart from this issue, our deluxe double room was adequately comfortable.

Room Tip: Other guests comment on room size, but we found a deluxe double room to be adequately comfortable.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your valuable feedback. We sincerely apologise regarding the difficulties that you experienced during your stay with us. We take our guest feedback seriously and your feedback has attracted our top management's attention.

We understand it must have been extremely frustrating that the neighbour door bell periodically ringing during midnight. We do have a policy of visiting hours for our guest's visitor due to that our guest comfort and safety is important to us. However, we have counselled our front line staff making remarks on that. As well, we have taken action and adjusted the sound volume of the door bell.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and we look forward to an opportunity to welcome you to stay with us again.

The room pictures shown on the Agoda site were obviously of the newer and neighbouring Santa Grand Chinatown, with more spacious modern rooms. Our experience in the older rooms was "different", with one of the rooms barely big enough for a double bed and having NO window at all.We had to ask for housekeeping to come and vacuum the floor of one room as there was a large amount of hair left by the previous visitors, on the carpet on the side of the bed where the hairdryer was anchored ( no, it wasn't in the bathroom).
The rooms and the guest lounge were decorated in an unusual fashion which had a certain charm.
The late discovery of the Yum Cha restaurant was a pleasant surprise as it was not advertised as well as it might be. It was certainly superior to the very basic "free" breakfast provided in the adjoining Santa Grand.
Location was excellent as we stepped outside to the heart of the Chinatown markets and food street. Getting to other tourist areas of Singapore was easily done from there.
Reception and housekeeping staff helpful and prompt with requests.

Room Tip: Make sure you book at the higher quality neighbouring Santa Grand!

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking the time write us a review. We are glad that you like the hotel’s location and convenience in Chinatown.

We do have two Santa Grand Hotels located in the heart of Chinatown and both hotels are just within a minute walking distance. However, Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen is converted from an opera theatre to a modern and unique opera-style designed hotel. While Santa Grand Hotel Chinatown is featuring relaxed and open "Hacienda Personality" of the Spanish countryside. Both hotels have a very different character in order to meet the diverse need of customers and you may consider our Deluxe Room for your next visit, which is more spacious in size.

Once again, thank you for sharing your experience with us on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.

We are stay there for 2 nights, it's more like a hostel then a hotel, mainly decoration was using carpets, and that make me felt very uncomfortable. Rooms are very small, but its location
is very good if you like to stay at the china town. MRT just 3 min. away. The American
cont. breakfast is good too. But, i won't stay there again.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking the time write us a review. We are glad that you like the hotel’s location and convenience in Chinatown.

We recognize that the size of the rooms are small especially Standard Room type and may be a bit inconvenient for some travellers like you which we are sorry to hear about. If a spacious room is a guest's preference, the Deluxe room type would be our recommendation.

However, this hotel may not be preferred by all the travallers. We do have other Santa Grand hotels in our chain, like Santa Grand Hotel Lai Chun Yuen just a minute walk from Santa Grand Hotel Chinatown, Santa Grand Hotel Bugis or Santa Grand Hotel East Coast to meet the diverse need of customers.

Once again, thank you for sharing with us on TripAdvisor. We hope to have a chance to host you again.

The single room was definitely the smallest room I ever had in Asia. It is so small that I could not open my suitcase. It is also difficult to store your luggage while in the room. It was kind of blocking the entrance. The bathroom is also very small and one has to sit sideways on the toilet because the sink is in the way.
The bed was comfortable though and the TV selection was good. Breakfast is offered at a hotel across the street.
The whole design of the Hotel, which is just on the 3rd floor of the building is in dark red and will take some time to get used to it. There are couches and seats available as a lounge, since the room is really to small to spend any time in. The staff was friendly, but typically did not look up when entering the lobby. The walls of the room showed lots of stains and some mold. The location is great. Right in the middle of Chinatown, next to lots of restaurants, bars and shopping stalls.

Room Tip: It is best to have a look at the room before confirming it. While I had a small combined toilet-show...

Small rooms but comfortable, unless you're over 6 feet tall the beds are perfectly comfortable...
Quiet and restful place.
Great staff (Irene and Penny), accommodating and spoke good enough English.
Great location! You're in the center of everything and the MRT is just a block or 2 away!
Be sure to book the deluxe rooms = value for money!

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 3031 and it was great! Not much cable TV but who cares, we're here to travel n...
