“Good experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

Stayed 3 nights to attend a convention, there is easy access to many restaurants and shopping areas nearby, Bugis MRT about 6-8 minutes walk. We had to travel to Marina Sands Convention center on all 3 days, there is a bus stop just next to hotel with direct link on Route #133, very convenient and an option if you do not want the walk to the MRT or to take a cab.
Staff very helpful and friendly, always ready to give assistance and information when requested.
Hotel room we booked was a twin since I had to travel with another colleague, we arrived early and as a room was ready we were checked in immediately. The room we got was without a window, we requested a room change and was offered one on the next day. Received the room change on 2nd day, although the space was smaller at least we had a window. We had a maintenance issue with couple of the lights not working due to a defective switch in the 2nd room, there was no maintenance person to attend to this in the night, it was repaired only the next day.
On 3rd day our room was not serviced, on informing the Reception they told us that we had been on DND, however this was not correct since we were out of the hotel for meetings the whole morning and afternoon.
Breakfast was included and was varied on each day and we enjoyed it.
Hotel provides free Wi-Fi in rooms as well as cable internet connections in the room we stayed in, connection was good although the speed tends to drop in the evenings.
Overall we had a very good experience and would use this hotel again in the future.

The hotel was good. I got a upgraded room, but it was closed to the lobby, therefore a little noisy.
The room are clean and well-arranged. It can be a little small for 2 people. However, still enough to sleep and relax.

The location is wonderful, 5-7 minutes from BUGIS MRT Station.

Room Tip: 101 Room which I stayed is not good at all.

The Pros:
- Close to MRT. Get out of Bugis MRT Exit B, turn right and keep walking straight till you pass Raffles Hospital on your right. Cross the road and still continue walking till you reach "Chemistry Bar" on your right. Keep walking till you reach arab street. You will see Santa Grand on your right hand side.

-Breakfast included. Very basic, repetitive menu, but still; breakfast inclusive is a bonus.

- Clean rooms, clean linen.

- Safe place if you want a basic hotel just to dump your bags and you're gonna be out all the time.

- Walking distance from Haji Lane (must visit), Arab Street, Bugis Village and other such shopping streets. Good eateries around.

- DO VISIT SYMMETRY BANG OPPOSITE. The best hot chocolate in the area.

The Cons:
- Very bad lighting in rooms. (Ours was the more expensive deluxe room with the road facing view).
- Only 4 English channels on tv (Though since we were out most of the time it didn't matter).
- Small swimming pool.
- Expensive for the very basic amenities offered. Maybe for Singapore standards its average price.
- Would recommend the ABC BACKPACKERS which is right opposite (20 mtrs away).

I check in on the 15th - 19th October. The hotel is a nice boutique Hotel, the staff is pleasant and friendly , real hospitality. The room is small, not spacious but acceptable. I was in Singapore to attend the ITB Asia and one evening on 17 October about 8pm I was in my room and my bathroom lights was flickering, I called the reception to have somebody in my room to replace another bulb.

The response time was good less than 5 minutes, after the guy saw the lights was flickering he told me that he can only have the bulb change the next morning. I asked why? And he said that he is not the maintenance staff, he is housekeeping staff. He told me that there are no
maintenance staff on duty.

I told him that I can't take a shower with the lights flickering . After about 15 minutes the lights stop flickering, however when I off the lights and switch on again it start to flicker again and it stop after a while again. In the end I decide to leave the bathroom lights on for the night until the next morning.

The question is why the hotel management don't have a maintenance guy on duty to service the guests. I don't blame the staff for not being able to change the bulb as they were worried of being electrocuted which I totally understand.

The problem here is not staff , it's the Manager / Management leadership.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are glad that you liked our hotel and noted some positive comments on the hotel. However, we are sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience during your stay with us and regret for any inconvenience caused.

We appreciate your feedback on maintenance of the hotel. We do in fact have off-site maintenance staff on standby after working hours, and before they end their daily duties, they would check that all facilities are in working condition. The flickering light could be an isolated breakdown and we apologize for the inconvenience caused. We have taken your feedback onboard for consideration as we continue to improve our hotel operations.

Once again, thank you for sharing with us on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.

Our room was fairly allright. It could use a good cleaning, and we even had a cocroach in our room. But the bed was good and breakfast was allright. Our room was in the basement, so our bathroom had quite some mold.

Pros:
- close to Bugis (3 blocks away, 5min walk)
- welcoming, professional staff
- affordable and reasonable room rate
- room had a TV, multi-national power points (accepts euro, UK, AUS etc. power plugs)
- bed was large and comfy
- room was tidy and neat, shower was clean, daily fresh towels etc.
- breakfast was nice
- my room had a good view
- they stored my backpack and suitcase for an entire day for free on my day of departure

Cons:
- A/C kept resetting itself to 16C when I was out of the room which was irritating but easily fixed
- their Singapore only power point didn't seem to like my AU-UK adapter, despite Singapore having the same power points as the UK (and HK)- see picture #3. Multi national power points weren't located near the bed which was kinda annoying (they are next to the TV)

I didn't use the pool so I can't comment on it.
I will definitely look at booking with this hotel again the next time I visit Singapore.

Room Tip: Get a deluxe room- well worth the extra expense.

+ Seems fairly good priced compared to other Singapore hotels
+ The room was ok in size for two persons and it was clean

+/- The location is between two stops on the metro (green line - Bugis and Lavender) so expect to walk about 500 meters. We found the location good, but it's not in the middle of everything
+/- The pool area was nice, but small and not well equipped (no cushions on the chairs, few chairs, no shower, etc.)

- We asked for a room away from the street, they said "Sure" and still gave us a room facing the main road. Maybe a misunderstanding, and the noise wasn't that bad anyway, but still...
- Breakfast was poor and crowded
- The safety box in our room wasn't attached to anything, which means you can take it with you and deal with the opening procedure later. Kind of pointless...

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your valuable feedback and noted the positive points about Santa Grand Hotel Bugis.

We are sorry to hear our breakfast did not meet your expectation during your stay. Our breakfast serves basically local food to cater for a wide preference of our guests and your feedback will serve as a good basis for us to work on improving the offer. Apart from that, we recognized the space of De Grand Restaurant is small and we will be increasing the seating capacity for breakfast to cater for its popularity, and will consider adding the opening hours should there be a need.

Meanwhile, the streets along Bugis tend to be a little noisy at night due to its ambience and food outlets in this Malay heritage area, and it can be troubling for some travellers like you. Our practice is to offer our guest a change of room that is not facing the streets which we did but with regret that our front desk misunderstood your request. As regards our safety box and roof top swimming pool, we appreciate your feedback and will make the improvement.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and sharing your experience with us on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.

Regards,
Hotel Management Team
