“Perfect Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2012

I enjoyed two great nights at this hotel in mid April. As is the case with most hotels in Singapore it is only about 20 mins from the airport and pretty much right downtown. My room was right beside reception and had a magnificent view down the Padang with the cities tallest buildings beyond. The room was very spacious with a large comfortable bed and an equally large bathroom. All the amenities were great. The only issue I had was with the power; when turning off the tv you need to be careful as it also knocked off the power to anything else plugged in to the power points beside it if you used the bedside switch. I thought initially my iron had died so called for a replacement which also seemed to have failed. It was pointed out to me by the maintenance guy to take care when turning the tv on and off. Strange. Another guest was caught out by the hot water heater isolation switch being amongst the light switches when you walk into the room. Make sure you turn off the right ones there or a cold shower will greet you the next morning.
The staff were very friendly with free internet at a desk beside reception. The restaurant is located in the basement area beside the gym and pool with a good selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurts and cooked options for breakfast. I had a late flight out of Singapore and was able to leave my bags after check out and have a shower in the gym changing rooms before heading out to the airport which is always great.
The location is exceptional with the City Hall MRT station just two minutes away beside Raffles City shopping centre from where you can easily get to anywhere on the island. Alternatively, the waterfront with the Merlion etc is a mere five to ten minutes away by foot.
All in all a great place to stay!

Nice staff, traditional old building with nice features, great swimming pool, gym etc.

Be warned you are expected to wear long trousers and a polo shirt as a minimum in the common areas. It's quite a smart place!

On our recent visit to Singapore, which was also our first time staying in Singapore, we chose to stay at The Residence because it looked like it was in a good central position. This turned out to be exactly the case. We arrived from the airport by train and found our accommodation just across the road. We walked to many of the places we wanted to see and the train was an easy option for those places a little further away. The staff at The Residence were all friendly and helpful and the other facilities at the club made for a really enjoyable stay. We would definitely stay here again on any future trips.

Haven't been back to Singapore for several years, I stayed for 2 weeks at SRC located next to the Padang which brought fond memories to me. My girlfriend explained the background how SRC had converted the 3rd floor which used to be their admin office into a residence so I was a bit skeptical of the services and facilities for the price I paid but I was wrong. Their rooms and bathroom were new, wide and spacious and I am surprised the room I had was a split level room providing a good view of the padang. Toiletries were provided generously including shoe bags! SRC is conveniently located and it is a 5 minute walk to Raffles City where I had my dinner daily. I had no problems walking to SMU which is also within walking distance. However, buffet breakfast choice is limited and would advise you to have your breakfast elsewhere. If you are hungry at midnight, there is always the Esplanade for the local alfresco dining, also within walking distance.
Reasonably priced with four star service right in the smack of town!

We were welcomed with a smile at the entrance to the recreation club. The Residence is on the 3rd floor of the club. Its a smart move to make use of the well located building and facilities. The room is well equiped. There were a couple of steps down into the bedroom from the entrance and so if you are not too mobile ask for one without. As previous visitors have said rooms with a view of the cricket green are a good choice. We had no problem with our room overlooking the Swisshotel. Breakfast is at the cafe attached to the indoor pool area and is more than adequate.
The main advantages are the location across the street from the MRT and Rafffles Shopping Centre and the value for money. The Singapore hotel prices are at the higher end and this property offers quality rooms at a good price.

I had been recommended plenty of other 4-5 star hotels to stay in but felt that price wise they were not really value for money. They might have had plenty of fancy facilities but my husband and I wanted something that would be reasonably priced and in a good location. We happened to chance on The Residence on tripadvisor and, due to the many favourable reviews, booked a weeks stay in May. I have to say we were extremely happy with the hotel. Its not flashy or luxurious but really comfortable, just like home. The staff were really helpful and happy to help out with requests and our check in and check out was quick and smooth. It was a nice surprise to find we had been upgraded to the Presidents room which afforded us more room and access to a balcony which overlooked the padang. Many evenings were spent looking out over the padang on the terrace with a drink and watching all the various sports being played. The terrace is a shared facility with all hotel guests but we found we were the only ones who pretty much used it so it felt like our own private terrace. We liked the fact that there is history attached to this place and the surrounding buildings. The location was excellent, so central to everything. We walked everwhere from here- The Marina area, The Singapore Flyer, Boat Quay and Clarke Quay with the famed Raffles hotel just up the road.. There is Raffles City shops across the road with a supermarket and food places and the best thing was the MRT station across the road. If we didnt walk we caught the train. The buses also pass by the hotel on Connaught Drive so catching buses were not a problem. The staff was so friendly and we always felt so welcomed, we especially liked our room service lady and the young Indian chap at the front door- always smiling! We found the bed really comfortable and the bathroom shower had decent pressure and was always well stocked with plenty of towels and toiletries. The bathroom walls and shower area initially felt weird, being built out of frosted glass which meant the person showering would be silhouetted to whoever was in the room, but this was remedied with pull down blinds. We were welcomed to use any of the facilities of the club during our stay which included the gym, pool and even the bowling alley. Access to free wifi is a bonus as is the full buffet breakfast that is included. On our last day we checked out and did a full days sightseeing at the Singapore Zoo. We asked if our bags could be stored before our departure later that day and not only was our luggage stored but we were also offered the chance to use the shower facilities in the club downstairs so that we could freshen up before we left for our filght. We thought this was a really nice gesture on the hotel's part as we thought we would be boarding the flight home pretty smelly. As it was, it was fantastic to be able to do this as we were both in need of a good shower when we got back! This is a sign of a hotel that really cares about its guests. The only downside to our stay was the walls seemed to be a little thin. I could hear our neighbour talking, not loudly but enough. One night I retired to bed early as I was not feeling well and there were a couple of rooms of guests who seemed to not care that anybody else was staying there and were yelling and banging doors from 10.30-12midnight. I did wonder where reception was then but when we spoke to reception in the morning they were apologetic and assured us they would fix the situation which they seemed to do as there were no further problems. This is an isolated incident and can happen anywhere. The air conditioning in the room can also can be a little bit on the cold side, I found myself going out on the balcony a few times to warm up. But overall these are minor things and I would definitely stay at the Residence again and would highly recommend it to anyone

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the padang - you will have open uninterrupted views over green playing fi...

The Residence was located in a great location and we were able to walk nearly everywhere we wanted to see in the 36 hour whirlwind visit to Singapore. The room was clean, nice, and in good order (with the exception of the mini fridge which was non functional). After being awoken to music, announcements, and mild chaos located outside our window starting at three AM, we later noticed that we had received a flier notifying us that there was going to be a Fun Run starting before the sun rose.
