I love those old colonial hotels, such as the Oriental in Bangkok, The Peninsula in Hong Kong and the E and O in Penang. I had been to Raffles many moons ago so thought it worth another try.
The bar is nice enough in itself but the staff were not only uncaring but had to be hailed a number of times. If they had even pretended, that would have been something. Took ages to seat us, even though there was no line and plenty of available seating. My wife felt a bad omen in how they ignored us, and everybody.
I had wondered where all the Europeans/Americans were were in Singapore, given how few one sees generally, and concluded they are all at the Long Bar. Barely an Asian to be seen. Certainly a major tourist trap with few redeeming features.
The SS was pretty mediocre. Very sweet run-of-the-mill. I hope it was premixed because I would hate to think anybody at such a leading hotel was so incompetent with their signature drink.
A bad ripped off feeling over all--at over $SG 30 all in for the SS, it left me with a bad taste in my mouth!
