“an enjoyable new year”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2008

Better than we expected based on the reviews on here. We'd booked the cheapest room from the hotel website and got a very good sized room and bathroom with separate shower and bath etc.
Overall service was rather good, an army of students from the hotel school next door as far as we could tell, but very keen and willing to please.
Food in the hotel is rather good, Thai restaurant Thanying lives up to its longstanding branch in the city, and a New Year's day brunch at Shutters was very civilised, although we probably benefited from a lack of other customers....
For service enthusiasm the boy at reception who ran up to Shutters to enquire about the brunch when he couldn't get through on the phone gets full marks(!)
Negatives bath wouldn't drain and first time we asked no-one came to fix it - although on 2nd call was done promptly.
Oh and for a spa resort with no spa is a bit odd...
However, nice room, nice setting and good location, generally good service so gets our vote

We stayed here 27-29 Dec 2007. Staff service terrible. Started with no hotel record of our reservation at check in (fortunately I had a copy of the email confirmation) . No apology offered. The second day, despite contacting room service once, I had to call again at 5.00 pm to have our room made up. Service at the main pool virtually non existant. Bar man gave us towels after we requested them having been at the pool for 25 minutes (no one else there) and then we had to request water later. This 'service' was the same on our second visit there. I was bitten by mosquitos alot by the pool, but no repellant available. No childrens menus in the restaurants - including the main, "Shutters' restaurant although we were told we could have fries and fish or pasta with tomato sauce. Choose to dine at the Beaufort for our main evening meal thereafter.
The resort is set in a lovely landscaped setting and the rooms aren't too bad, but bath mats, a hair dryer and more than one bar of soap would have been appreciated. Also, recylced hotel slippers should at least have the dryed mud removed from the soles.
This was all a very disappointing experience.

Resort has some potential, but definitely not there. Seems to be a bit falling apart after only one year and seems to be missing that special something that could make it a top class resort.

Biggest disappointment were the pools- the sky pool on the top floor is supposed to be for adults only, but every time we went up there there were tons kids there, even when there was a big sign saying "Adults only". My wife and I tried to go to the pool several times, but every time it was packed solid. Kids aren't a big deal, but the resort really advertises that the sky pool is for adults only, then the staff lets kids run wild up there. Similar with the other pool- not enough seats and we were never able to frequent the pool the entire stay because it was booked solid every time we went.

Breakfast was okay, nothing great. Service was tough- we had to end up getting our own coffee as we were never offered any.

Not a bad place, but at S$300+, you expect more and you can get more from other hotels. At S$150 it would have been fine and I would have been happy, but felt like it was too expensive for what you got.

We paid S$260/night to stay at this property....For this price, I could have stayed at many other great Singapore properties such as the Ritz (S$220)....I SOOOO regret my decision to stay at Amara.

The hotel is nothing to write home about. Previously read that this property was built less than a year ago, but I can tell yout that the hotel is showing significant wear-and-tear. My room came with a double and a seating area but it was all crammed together because the rooms were small. Seals around tub, shower, sink all worn out. The tiles look uneven in places. The tub nobs stuck so unable to drain water.

The service is way below par for a high end, luxury property. I stayed 4 days and can attest that I did not see a single senior person/manager on duty the whole time. Quality of service needed a lot of work.

Had breakfast buffet each morning and it was so-so...lacked assortment, but the food was okay. The waffles were the best! Very fresh and very well made.

Everything is far away from this hotel. Cab rides cost about S$15-20 one way to/from hotel into town. One day while in town, it was raining and it was impossible to hail a cab. Called several cab companies and it took nearly 2.5 hours to get a cab to pick me up to go back to hotel. This is obviously not the hotel fault, but I could have had the option to walk to the hotel had it been located in town.

Recreational facititlies also very dismal. Pool on 4th floor overlooking the waters. Good view, but pool area not very desirable and not too clean. The workout room has 4 stationary threadmill, bike, etc. Again, not sure where/how they added "Sanctuary" when recreational facilities are so poor. Also, they do not have the spa open so no access to sauna or whirlpool.

If I had to do it over, i would skip Amara. If you are passionate about staying in Sentosa, wait till the casinos are built!

Sorry, but this hotel is recommendable. Nice room and reception in contemporary style, but that's about it. Very bad maintenance around the pools. Only one restaurant (for breakfast, lunch and dinner) plus one Chinese (not my taste). Two or three more to "open soon" ?? (No sign of them.) I checked out after 4 hours...

We stayed at a suite in this hotel for one night. Architecturally, it's a really beautiful hotel, blending modern, clean lines of stainless steel, green glass and cool marble cladding with historically interesting British army barracks, dating from the second World War. Our suite consisted of a small room dominated by a large, beautiful bed, and a little private "garden" with a bubbling jacuzzi pool and its own outdoor shower. On first impression, it was a very pleasant hotel. The toilets covered in beige travertine and relaxing hot water flowing endlessly from the rain shower.

There are three things that we did not like about it, but the hotel can definitely fix them if they make the effort. Over time, this could be a great place to stay once the teething problems are gone.

The first thing we did not like was the prevalence of worms - millipedes, centipedes and other creepy crawlies all over the garden paths, and one or two in the toilet too. We tried to hang out in our beautiful little private garden in the evening, but had to escape within because of the worms and hungry mosquitoes.

The second thing was the lack of hooks in the bathroom. I know this sounds trivial but just wait until you're wet after a bath with no where to hang your damp clothes and towel at all!

The third thing was the service. The staff are polite and very friendly, but they are new, so very slow and a little clueless. The restaurant staff (Shutters) were particularly confused and you could hear them panicking and arguing among themselves.

  • Liked — It is a very beautiful place.
  • Disliked — Worms, no toilet hooks, not very efficient service

We just stayed one night on a very short stopover between Europe and Sydney. We got a great price on the hotel web site (promotional offer) - a deluse room for $S 220 pn. The room was great - not at all small by international hotel standards (39 sq m) - the bathroom excellent. Even thought we had the cheapest room it had a night outlook - water views.

A few notes however - the resort is still not completely finished - the grounds and not all bars/restaurants are ready. Service was not very polished but there were plenty of staff and they were all extremely friendly and helpful.

The ongoing construction all over Sentosa is a bit of a distraction but that is not the fault of the resort.

We had dinner at Shutters (the main restaurant) - it was very nice however it tries too hard to offer a variety of cusine. We ate outside as it was a nice evening but other than one other table the restaurant was totally empty - I presume this will change as both the resort and Sentosa are finished.

  • Liked — Great rrom for the price
  • Disliked — Resort not completely finished - main restaurant was empty at dinner
