We stayed in Surfside for 4 nights during the low season. The rooms were so-so but the beds were fairly comfortable though maybe a bit firm. There's a tiny TV as well as a mini-bar but I was surprised there was no free bottled water since the area's water is not that safe to drink. We stayed in a room in the back in the shade which would really be the place to stay during the warmest months in Boracay. It stayed cool even without the air conditioner.
The attached cafe was nice, breakfast was included in our room rate booked through agoda. Food was pretty good though breakfast options were a bit limited. I wanted pancakes but would have to pay for them (even though they were cheaper than the set menu). But, the coffee was constantly flowing and it is a good place to hang out and enjoy the wonderful view. We also had drinks there one night and while you can certainly get cheaper drinks on the island, I actually got the strongest poured drinks in my life at the hotel cafe. Pretty good value.
The attached spa is also a great value. Hotel guests get discounts on the services so the massage I got was only 500php. Manicure was 30% off.
I wish they offered hair treatments but they had a combination technique massages, mani-pedis, vidro massages, and jacuzzi/sauna services. All are really reasonably priced. Facilities could use some updating but it was still a good experience.
As for the beach, it is located on a quiet end. However, the whole time I was there, there was kite boarding lessons going on right on the strip of beach located in front of the hotel. It made swimming inconvenient and dangerous so we had to walk a ways down or up away from the hotel to go swimming. You also have to be very careful which loungers you use. We used the ones closer to the swimming area and had all of our things removed from the loungers and put in the sand. When I asked why, they told me that those loungers did not belong to the hotel. I was confused since it was about 20 feet away from where we had been sitting previous days, so it might be best to check with the hotel before putting your stuff somewhere.
Location is far from boat station 2. I didn't mind the walk at all but those with children or elderly people may want to avoid this area. During off-season, it would honestly be fine to just book a hotel at station 2 because no area of the beach is that heavily populated. But, this is definitely the place to go for off-season. The hotel is very close to Red Pirates Pub (an expat favorite) and a restaurant called Cowboy Cocina. I definitely recommend stopping by Cowboy Cocina on Monday's for their Trivia night. I had a ton of fun.
