“Closed and Deserted, What A Shame”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2010

This place has gorgeous scenery but looks like it has been deserted for ages. There were cobwebs in the public toilets. We had booked online months before only to find no one there but a lady nursing a baby who was related to the owner but couldn't give us our pre-booked room. We finally walked down to the beach and ended up at Green Verde Lodge which had nice cabins opposite the beach. There is a massage concession on the beach for really cheap prices, less than $15 per hour!

When we arrived in Bambua it was after the long winding road from Puerto Princessa very interesting to see the countryside. We were greeted and shown our cottage. Nice, clean, and firm beds. We had an ant colony right outside our door, which we swept repeatedly, and no food entered the building for sure! The food was great and Mark was a true ambassador for this establishment, working very hard and always a smile on his face! We swam everyday at the beach and snorkeled with Andre, saw the underground river and Mangrove trees..So when we returned to Puerto Princessa and were wrong in our days..Andre took care of us, not only finding us a place to stay, eat but also hiring a driver for a tour for the day..all in the course of 1/2 hour!!! Very thankful to them and their assistance and care. Yes go to Bambua but be prepared for animals everywhere, and the whole jungle noisiness, great hosts, great food, lots of animals

I expected to like Bambua, but I left disgusted. Little nagging instances of poor service and shoddy management added up during our three-day stay. For instance, each day we had to request several times that our electricity be turned on for the appointed “lights on” period. The staff gave us the impression that 1 drink each was included in our half-board dinner, when that wasn’t the case. It all started to make sense when we requested to pay the bill. The owner, whom we had not yet met, emerged and treated us with such pure rudeness that I was in shock. Without introducing himself--even after my husband made a point of doing so!--he sarcastically remarked about our polite request to have a 6 a.m. breakfast followed by a 1-kilometer ride to the jeepney stop, even though his staff had already told us that the place opens at 6. He didn’t just insinuate that we were unreasonable and demanding; he literally called us "strange people." His behavior was so unjustified, inexcusable, non-classy, and unbefitting a business owner that I would have been embarrassed for him had I not been seething. At once I knew why I had a bad feeling at Bambua from moment one: I had sensed the lack of hospitality that comes from a terrible host.

People who visit Sabang for the Underground River during a day trip miss a lot. There is the mangrove river forest tour and the many caves to explore. I particularly enjoyed the climb to see the Daylight Hole Cave. I appreciated that the management and staff were very attentive to our needs and interests. Bambua is a nature retreat with a rustic ambience. Expect to hear a gecko or a lizard nearby. Expect to see nature face to face. I gave high ratings based on my need to connect with nature. I went to Bambua to escape from modern life for a few days.

We started off with a welcome drink in a sort of art house before we travelled to Sabang. That was already impressive. After a seemingly endless trip in unpaved roads, from Puerto Princesa city proper to Sabang, Bambua welcomed us with subdued lights and noise of night animals and insects, as we climb up to the reception area of the resort. We knew we were up to a unique and wonderful experience. Monkeys sort of 'welcomed' us in our first night, making noises, throwing stones from cottage to cottage. They serve vegetarian food if you have a companion who does not eat any kind of meat. Nothing fantastic, but it wasn't bad. Reasonable rates, too. Do not expect posh hotel and resort services like all night lights and air-conditioned rooms. The light turns off at 12 midnight. It's like a jungle camping experience with decent amenities and comfortable sleeping place. The resort and the whole Sabang experience are worth remembering. The kind of vacation, you will always refer to. I admire the concept of this resort. Kudoz to Andre and Rosalie.

We stayed at Bambua for six nights total. For about $20 we got a room with bed, bathroom, and it was as clean as you can expect from jungle accomodations. The staff were very friendly and the dinner each night was excellent. Definitely the best food in Sabang!

Pros- Affordable, friendly staff, beautiful jungle setting within an easy walk of the stunning beaches and the trails that lead to the underground river, great home cooked food, amazing morning wake-up call from the jungle sounds!

Cons- No power after midnight, it's in the jungle so insect repellent is vital

We checked out all other accomodation in Sabang and for the money, this can't be beat!
