“Nice Place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2009

First of all: The Marina Garden Resort offers 2 kinds of accomodation. One with fan the other with fan and aircon. Travellers should only take the (more expensive) aircon-ones, the others are worn-out and really not nice. The aircon-rooms are nice and they lie directly on the beach. Although there is no daily roomservice and the rooms are quite small the location of the relatively buildung outweighs that. Breakfast is included and the small hotel-bar offers beer, drinks and sandwiches. please note that there is no electricity from 8 till 14 o'clock. so aircon and light will not work that time. the marina garden may not be the best hotel you have ever stayed in but it's pretty much ok - and one of the best choices in el nido.

We arrived at El Nido at 1:00PM, very, very hungry. We looked for a place to eat and after which, looked for a nice accommodation. After looking for sometime, we finally settled at Marina Garden Beach Resorts([--], [--], http://marinagardenelnido.multiply.com). The standard room rate is P1,250/ room/ night with free breakfast. It has the basic amenites – aircon, TV, and bathroom and to my standard, this is okay already, maybe the best in so far as the area is concerned. They also offer native cottages fan rooms at P550-750/ night and beachfront aircon rooms at P1,650 up. Electric power in El Nido is from 12 noon to 4PM and then 6PM to 6AM. Haven’t seen any banks, although I spotted some money changers around the area . We strolled along the beach front to unwind and watch the beautiful view of the sunset.

El Nido is considered a first class municipality and has a lot to offer. Magical place, a paradise, as tourists say, well, it really is, from its ageless towering marble cliffs to its white sandy beaches with crystal clear water.

A must try are the island tours which you can arrange at the front desk in Marina Garden Beach Resorts. We paid P3,600 for eight pax for the island tour. Since it will be for the whole day, we took some foods and some drinks. We bought fresh fishes and veggies and have them cooked at Marina for a minimal price. Our island tour includes going to the enchanting small and big lagoon, twin rocks in miniloc island, caves to hidden beaches, secret lagoon, snake island, commando island among others. Whew.... what can I say....it is truly a relaxing and inspiring place. Only in the Philippines... I would surely recommend this trip to everybody.

It's just a basic place to stay, but the location is good and it's clean. I thought it was a little overpriced for what we got, but El Nido accomadation is higher then the rest of Palawan. We didn't have a room with hot water, which usually I wouldn't have minded, but as it rained a lot the outside temperature was cooler then expected. If you want a TV set, it is on a first come first serve basis. The staff are fairly friendly and helpful. There is a basic restaurant/bar that serve snacks and drinks at a good price, but you don't need to look far for places to eat along the beach.

We stayed in a country villa room. Cold shower was no problem beacause of the climate. The townside rooms were similar but with far inferior location.
Plus: Good american breakfast. Comfortable beds.
Minus: Aircon only a few hours a night. The staff was not very helpfull and never smiled.

Great place to sleep, restaurant lack luster but their rooms 1-10 (about 38USD a night) are new and very clean.. Central but slightly noisy location, big karaoke bar 30m away. The cottages are a little too rustic for me but maybe that is cool if you want a real deal at about 15USD a night.

Great jump point for seeing the many near by islands.

Finding Marina Garden Beach Resort’s contact details for booking takes some effort as their website is a blog (http://marinagardenelnido.multiply.com). They also have an e-mail, which they no longer read according to an auto reply I received, but I also received a confirmation on the booking by e-mail only minutes after the auto reply! The e-mail is [-]. You can also book by phoning them on [-].

The hotel is located just on the beach with a short walking distance from the centre of El Nido. The beach was in immaculate condition, you could not find any litter anywhere. I have not stayed in a property which would have been so well located, not at least given the very reasonable room rate we paid (PHP 1650 all inclusive).

The hotel has older native cottages and newer country villas. We stayed in a standard room, which lacks warm water unlike deluxe rooms. It was not a major shortcoming as the water was actually quite warm even though not heated. The coldest showers I have had are still in the UK.

Rooms are fairly basic and the furniture is not luxurious, however perfectly acceptable. There was some sand on the floor when we arrived, however it is not terribly surprising as the property is literally is on the beach. Our room was not cleaned during our four night stay, so leave the sandals outside and make your bed yourself!

The breakfast was the standard treat in the Philippines served in the beach bar: some white bread, rice, egg, juice and coffee. Fresh fruits were also available. The staff was very quick and efficient, however not as friendly and chatty as typically in the Philippines. Not sure why, but never mind – they never were rude or impolite.

This is a cash only place, so make sure your have cash when you arrive to El Nido. In El Nido, there are no ATMs and the only options to get cash with a credit card are Art Café (10 % commission) or petrol station Petron (6 % commission). You don’t need a PIN for a disbursement at Art Café, but be aware that your credit card company may decline these non-PIN transactions. So, it is better to go to Petron, use your PIN and save some money at the same go. The commission may feel a bit stiff, but please remember that you will not be charged the commission you would pay for a cash disbursement at an ATM (or at least I was not for my Petron disbursement).

But, as a summary El Nido and the surrounding archipelago are amazing places to visit. I would not recommend staying at the island resorts as they are more expensive and you will miss the good nightlife of El Nido. Marina Garden Brach resort makes a perfect base for your holiday in El Nido at a very reasonable price. Warmly recommended and I will definitely stay also at next time in El Nido.

Marina Garden was a good budget place to stay in El Nido town. They kept the property super clean and were always sweeping. They are located on the best part of the beach and are within walking distance to all amenities.
Breakfast was included with our room rate and was okay but it was nice to eat at other places once in a while for breakfast.
Some of the downsides for us were:
We read on so many reviews about how friendly the staff is at Marina Garden but that just was not our experience - we found the staff here to be indifferent.
We had them do our laundry and it came back in wrinkled disaster - I have never had laundry come back like that. The next time we just walked down the street to LJ Laundry service and they did the most fabulous job!
The other downside was the resort charged an extra 150 per night for hot water, which is fine if you can get hot water at decent hours. Every other day in El Nido the electricity comes on very late at night, so you had to wait to have a hot shower sometimes until 11:00PM, every other day you could have a hot shower at around 6:30PM. I just think that if a resort is going to charge for hot water then it should be available at a decent hour or else don't charge extra for it. The other thing was sometimes you wouldn't have any water at all. But with that said that is just how it is in El Nido and one just has to be prepared to work around it. There are some hotels that have a water tank on the roof and that would be a good option as the water would be available and would be a fine temperature.
We had a great stay in El Nido and enjoyed the island hopping and the scenery very much!
