We went here for oue honeymoon over the christmas period and I can safely say we had an absolutley amazing time. We requested a beach villa with a good view and lucky enough we got one of the best. Only about 4 beach villas have good views of the neighbouring island and sunset and these are situated just North of the Beach club so make sure to ask.
We booked directly through the Aman resorts reservation line and everything was done for us and we had no problems getting to the island via the inter-island flight. Every villa (or Casita) has their own golf buggy so it makes exploring the island that much more fun.
The villas themselves are large with half given over for the bathroom. I wouldn't say that they are the most modern ones in terms of having Plasmas and all the latest gizmos, but I personally loved them and I don't you need to have all of that as you are there for the island, environment and the service. They also have direct access to your own bit of pure white beach and there is a hammock to fall asleep in.
Activity wise, there is a fair amount to do, particularly for the sea lover. We did a bit of fishing and it was great fun (price for your reference is about US$160 an hour). The water was crystal clear and the snorkling was fantastic (we even saw a few sharks) They also have tennis courts, mountain bikes, massage sala and a well stocked library and DVD collection.
The hotel also has a very nice pool situated at the clubhouse and when it was a bit too windy down at the beach this was a great option and the staff were extremely attentive, handing out water, free drinks and some ice cream throughout the day. Also everywhere you go there is free insect repellant and sun cream so you don't need to bring a whole load with you. I know people have mentioned the sand flies in past reviews, but we didn't find these to be a problem. My wife was bitten once and it was quite unpleasant, but if you show some common sense and put the repellant on then you will be fine.
The food throughout the trip was good, I wouldn't say great but the chef did make us some special requests as after a few days we didn't want to have too much rich food. I would definitely recommend taking out the meal plan as the food is expensive, although I would say that if anyone goes to one of these resorts and moans about prices etc etc once they return then they really didn't do their research properly.
Overall I would give Amanpulo top marks, we only had a few quibbles and these were easily forgotten about once you take everything into consideration. The staff do their absolute best to help you and we did feel sympathetic as some of the guests were unbelievably difficult and I thought rather rude, but hey I think thats life.
Finally, the manager and assistant manager were always present and they were extremely friendly and helpful. Everynight we would return to our room and find small gifts and nibbles and this was always an end to what was always a perfect day.
I would fully recommend that anyone should go here for a relaxing break, it is expensive but 100% worth it. If you are living in the far east, forget about the Maldives or Seychelles as they take a long time to get to and instead make your way to Amanpulo. Enjoy.
