“Clean but I felt like in prison”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

We went to this hotel in November 2013. The hotel itself is in the main square of Banaue and you can't miss it. The price is quite high both for the Philipino average and for the service offered. The room was clean but was lacking of the power plugs to recharge our stuff. The food served in the restaurant was lower than the good Philippino food that I've got accustomed during my travelling. By the way, the lyophilized soups (asparagus, mushrooms) were badly cooked and they still had chucks of unmolten powder inside. Anyway, the sight is gorgeous and it's nice to see the valley at dawn. About the personnel they were cold and there were lots of people that tried to drag us with their overpriced tours. Sometimes we had fun to pass by the same person 5-6 times and listen all the times the question "What's you plan for today"?. Another weird thing is their curfew. Their kitchen stops working at 20.30 PM, the gate close at 21.00 PM like forcing you to eat there, otherwise, you'll be locked outside. But sometimes, they close the gate even at 20.30 PM. By the way, they even close the door to the balcony, so people are locked-in, like in prison. Time to sleep, turn the lights off and shut up. Old people need to sleep. That's what it sounds like.

Thank you for your review. Allow me to answer some of the issues you pointed out.

1. Power plugs: We had a bad experience with guests bringing in rice cookers, and other heat generating appliances which caused a fire a few years back. Since our lodge is mostly wood, we decided to forego the power plugs in the guest rooms in the upper floor to avoid any similar incident from happening again. I also know that there are some guesthouses that don't have power plugs in their guest rooms.

2. Soup: We have already removed those from our menu.

3. Personnel: I wonder which of the personnel you are referring to as cold. Would you remember? As for those offering you overpriced tours, that must be outside our lodge as we don't allow guides to hang out in the lodge. We only call on a guide when our guests ask for advice or a referral.

4. "Curfew": Yes, the kitchen closes at 8:30PM. If you noticed, we don't have "shifting" so the people who cook and serve breakfast are the same ones who cook and serve lunch and dinner. We also wake up early everyday to prepare for the day ahead. Our staff get tired and need their rest too. We close the front door at 8:30PM to let guests from outside know we are closed. But if you are billeted with us, you may always go out as long as you let us know so we can show you which bell to use should you come in late. We usually assign one person to wait up for guests who go out after dinner. We also close the door to the veranda to keep the lodge secure from break ins, though there are no incidents like this. We just want to keep our guests safe.

Banaue is a sleepy town so night life is basically confined to a few karaoke places around.

We hope that this helped shed light on your issues and that guests who read your review will also know the reasons behind all of the issues.

We appreciate our guests opinion, whether positive or negative. There is always room for improvement - in everything.

Enjoy the rest of your vacation, wherever that may be.

Safe travels!

We came here with TouristDriver who had promised the best room in town and delivered!

Initial impressions were not good - let's just say kerb appeal hasn't even been considered! The room was very large with 2 double beds, a nice bathroom and terrific views over the town to the rice terraces.

The hotel also had a decent (but not great) restaurant with good wifi. The breakfast menu was Filipino cuisine or pancakes - we had the pancakes and they were excellent. The only downside was that service could be very slow (the pancakes took half an hour and we were the only ones having breakfast!) and I think the other rooms are probably not in the same league as the one we stayed in (in fact I think they were mostly dorms).

Thank you for your review.

I'm sorry to hear about your long wait for your order. We have already addressed that issue and hope it won't happen again.

Yes the room you stayed in is one of the newer ones. We also have other rooms, but they are not mostly dorms...we do have other private rooms with ensuite bathrooms in the upper floor.

Safe travels!

Sanafe is a good choice if you are headed to or through Banaue. The rooms are simple, but adequate, and the menu is limited, but very reasonably priced (we were coming from SubicBay). 6 dinners and 5 breakfasts and several snacks set us back about Php 1200. Susan is kind and the staff is friendly and warm.

First off if you are visiting the north of Philippines you are likely more of an adventurous person, It is quite a journey to get to a place such as Banaue. The town is very simplistic and basic, there is no luxoury accommodations anywhere. Sanafe is the best in the region and the price does indeed reflect the quality. That said the staff are extremely helpful and offer the best in Filipino hospitality. The owner of the hotel mingles with her clients and is always on hand to assist with local information or even just idle the time away in chitchat, this is very much a welcome into my home style of hotel lodge. Personally I am used to a higher level of luxoury accommodation and was a little surprised when I first saw our room, however, rough it a little because the location is worth it, but be very prepared to do some hiking to get to the best views.

Would I go again..... hell yes and I plan to next year with a pal of mine from UK when we will rough it on a 4 day hike, can't wait.

Room Tip: Sleep quality I have marked as poor because there are too many dogs nearby barking all hours, then t...

My wife and I stayed for a night at Sanafe. We did not book, and walked here from the bus terminal. We took a double room that had its own bathroom. We didn't view any other places, however from the outside I doubt any would've been remarkably greater quality than Sanafe.
The room was basic and clean, with 2 double beds, AC, hot water and a small window. The shower repeatedly fell from the wall mount, but otherwise the room was fine.
The lodge' restaurant served basic fare, but was all well priced and of good quality if nothing spectacular. The view from the balcony was sensational, and it would be difficult to beat for any price anywhere in the world.
Our return bus did not leave until 7pm, and we were able to extend our checkout until about 6pm for a small fee. This was a godsend after spending the day trekking through Batad, meaning we could shower and relax before our bus ride. Given a typhoon hit mis bus trip, the journey was 32 hours, so enduring this without a shower and clean clothes would've made it infinitely more difficult.

We stayed only one night for a two day tour of Banaue and Sagada. The staff and owner - Miss Susan - know how to treat their guests. If we needed anything, all we had to do was ask and they went out of their way to accommodate. We were also fortunate to have a fantastic guide for our two day tour. He is Denwil Batangog. He is a native of Banaue, still lives there and his family owns a part of the rice terraces. We were only there for two days and he arranged a custom itinerary to fit our schedule. It was fantastic. I highyly recommend Sanafe Lodge and Denwil. His name is unique which makes it easy to find him with a quick search on google.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms offer a full wall of glass overlooking the rice terraces. Beautiful!!

We stayed here a couple of days. We had the best room , a whole wall was a large glass door overlooking the spectacular view. The food is excellent, breakfast, dinner, its all really good. Susan, the owner, is warm, welcoming, and a very classy lady.
