Visited Tangkahan during Moslem holiday. Mega of Mega Inn arranged car to pick us up at Medan. It took around 3 hours to reach Tangkahan. The last section of the road to Tangkahan [around 16 km] was not yet asphalted, a rough oil-palm plantation road only, so the ride was quite bumpy. The driver Ren was very considerate, drove slowly on this section.
Arriving at Tangkahan parking lot, Mega assigned his brother Fren, and another guy Putra, to take care of our need. To get to Mega Inn from the parking lot, had to cross a wide river Buluh through a hanging bridge.
Had Sukawana room with river view. The hut was very basic. Bed was equipped with mosquito nest. Toilet had some open air space and very simple setup. Had to charge phone at the restaurant. Electricity was off after 10 p.m. In the evening, small kerosene lamp was provided so as not to be in total darkness. Surprisingly, this basic facility was relaxing, with non-stop running river and crickets sound when the sun set. Time just stopped there! Slept soundly through the night. There was additional entertainment from the local boys, singing with guitar, by the river in the afternoon, and at Mega’s restaurant in the evening.
Attractions offered in Tangkahan apart from rainforest trekking, were elephant ride/feeding/ bathing, hot water spring, bathing/swimming/tubing in the river. But only did trekking, since it rained heavily a while on the day we arrived, and didn’t feel like doing any of those, except to relax in terrace, and soft walk along the river.
Next morning, sky was clear. After crossing the river, we hiked into the forest. Despite the clear sky outside, it was quite dark once inside the rainforest, heavy foliage trees; lots of leeches on the ground and fallen logs/leaves, after heavy rain the day before. They put some insect repellant covering our feet and shoes to repel, but still, some leeches found their way to the ‘food’ :)) The trek path at some parts were unclear. Fren kept slashing branches and roots to make way. Really enjoyed the fresh air, the flora, chirping birds, monkeys’ calling, and the natural-raw feel of it. Amazing! Unfortunately, didn’t spot any bird or monkey in close range, probably because of the still quite dark forest atmosphere. Fren showed us many shrub and tree kinds, ones that we normally just heard the name, but never seen in real. The whole trek took around 3 hours, then we were back at the inn, getting ready to leave for Bukit Lawang.
Love Tangkahan and Mega Inn, amazing rainforest, relaxing place, helpful people.
