“Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

Excellent hotel; very good value; get a room over looking the swimming pool with balcony. We found the staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet is very good; good meals available in restaurant for lunch/dinner. Rooms over looking pool are spacious. As another reviewer mentioned, there is a very good inexpensive laundry just a half block to the left of hotel. Very comfortable bed.

Room Tip: Pool balcony; use outside cheap laundry just to left of hotel when you exit the hotel

We stayed for 3 nights at the Phoenix, and loved it. The common areas are lovely, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was also excellent, as was the bar in the evening, where there was live music. There are also some nice restaurants in the vicinity - we ate at "Tiga Nyonya" (just across the road - but I suggest walking up and crossing at the traffic lights if you want to get there safely), which is fairly up-scale, and for something "cheap and cheerful", there is a very good, clean Nasi Campur place (buffet style) around the corner where you can eat well for about $2.

While not right in the centre, the main shopping strip of Yogyakarta is a 15 minute walk away, and the Kraton (Sultan's palace) is a further 20 minutes or so. Of course you can also take a taxi or bus, but the walk was fun.

The only negative thing we can say is that our standard room was a bit small. However we thought that the Phoenix was still great value - especially the 3-night rate including breakfast which came to less than $70 per night.

Room Tip: The standard rooms are a little small

The hotel is very unique and artistic. The lobby, room, swimming pool, restaurant, and other facilities are satisfying. The staffs were really helpful and hostile. The location is strategic, I only spent less than 30 minutes to the airport and 5 minutes to Malioboro. The food was also great and various. They served Indonesian food, western, Asian, etc, so many such that could gain your weight :). If you go there and the budget is available you may want to try the Executive / Suite, the room was great and facing to the swimming pool.

Through the glass doors and into the world of yesteryear....... This hotel is majestic, historic and romantic. A small sitting room invites you to relax and explore. The courtyard functions as the restaurant with both outdoor and indoor seating. The bar seems a bit more contemporary with a nice seating area and a fun place for billiards. The bartenders were wonderfully friendly and had time to chat. (We love conversing with the locals. There's always some much to learn and share.) Our room was very comfortable with a nice decor, a balcony facing the courtyard pool and a very comfy bed. We found the food to be excellent and plentiful.

This hotel is a lovely example of a colonial hotel in excellent condition. The beautiful decorations and attention to detail makes it a perfect setting for a quite wonderful experience. Staff are friendly and the food is excellent. I found the hotel was the ideal place to kick back and relax after a day sight seeing.

From the moment you enter the Phoenix, you will be taken aback by its modest exterior compared to what lies behind the walls. This magnificently preserved colonial building has been renovated to world class standard, whilst retaining its heritage.

It is beautifully appointed, with tasteful decor, excellent facilities ( spa, sauna, pool, gym, restaurants and bars), fabulous staff and attention to guests, excellent cuisine, and there is truly no comparison to any modern 5 star hotel you will find in Yogya, or for that matter in many other cities throughout Asia, and in fact even Europe.

Every moment at the Phoenix is a constant imprint in the mind that you are in a city steeped in history. I have been travelling to Yogya since on a 5 yearly basis since 1974, have stayed in Losmens to mid range hotels, budget accomodations and many modern hotel chains. i will not go past The Phoenix again.

It is value for money, sure a tad upmarket pricewise, and most internal items purchased can be purchased outside at a lot less, however for accomodation, service and overall comfort, I believe it can't be beat. my initial stay was for 2 days, however I was so impressed I extended an additional 3 nights and cancelled an alternative hotel booking arrangement.

My congratulations to the management and staff. i sincerely hope my next stay, (which might I add will be much sooner than the 5 yearly (as i travel to Indonesia a few times annually) as i previously mentioned.

I will certainly be recommending The Phoenix to my friends when I arrive home. It is just a pity Accor has no more than the 2 hotels available in Indonesia.

Fabulous!!!!

Hassle-free online booking for my travel party of 7 adults. Emailed queries and requests for an extra bed were replied to speedily. Smooth check-in, well-appointed rooms. Regular rooms are small-ish. The smell of a dead rodent steadily increased in one room of ours the longer the air conditioning was kept on, so we were transferred to a suite at no extra charge. Two thumbs up for the free upgrade to a bigger and better room.

Room Tip: Ask if they have rooms that overlooks the small courtyard that has a fountain. Rooms overlooking th...
