Affandi is a well known artistic icon in Yogyakarta.
Although we arrived before opening time, we were permitted to enter, so it was nice to be able to view the paintings in tranquility. There is an entrance fee that differs dependent on whether you are Indonesian or not. I jokingly said (in Bahasa Indonesia) I was Indonesian (though quite clearly I am not!), and I was granted 2 for 1 entrance! Good PR!
We enjoyed viewing Affandi's artistic works in the three galleries. The day we visited, staff were getting ready for an evening opening exhibition for Affandi's grand daughter, also an artist. We were able to view her work, too.
It was good to see young artists being encouraged, as they have an area where they are taught the finer points, and some of their work on display certainly shows promise.
Disappointing the pool still suffers from the damage of an earthquake, purely for aesthetic reasons, though without water, Affandi's design can be seen clearly.
A visit to the cafe for a drink was a pleasant way to end our time here. I think the cafe and the souvenir area could be combined.
Not a brilliant tribute to Affandi's work, but interesting and worth a visit, none the less.
