There's a branch of this famous Yogya restaurant in Depok, near the airport on the main road to Solo, and it shouldn't be missed if you're willing to be a little adventurous. It's right next door to the Sheraton Mustika. From the hotel, walk down to the main road, and it's the first place on the left. Gudeg is a traditional food from Central Java, made from young jackfruit, which is boiled with palm sugar, coconut milk and spices for several hours. Teak leaves often add a reddish colour.
This restaurant only serves Gudeg, so everything comes with the jackfruit curry and white rice. You can then choose from meat and vegetarian options. I had chicken liver (including heart and the gizzard which I did not eat), a deep-fried egg and a spicy tofu/tempe combination. It was all delicious. I daringly tried the fried cow skin, expecting it to be crispy, but unfortunately it was soggy, and rather like eating a slightly leathery-tasting sponge. For future visits I would pass on the cow skin, and perhaps try the chicken instead of the chicken liver.
I highly recommend visiting this restaurant for tasty, authentic Yogya food.
