“Shake Rattle and Roll”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2014 via mobile

On a busy holiday weekend we were very fortunate to walk in and get the last jeep at 9am. The one hour tour was plenty. Our guides English was poor but we had clear views, rocky terrain to navigate and enough detail in the description by the guide to connect the dots.
Excellent for photo opportunities, glimpses of how the community live off the land and to see the lava beds.

“Be wary of dodgy guides!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2014

Everyone in Indonesia seems to be related to everyone so when we stayed in Yogya, the owner immediately offered a range of tours - of course provided by his "cousin". What we in fact got was an odd drive up to the base of the mountain and a cup of tea in someone's front room. A local farmer then walked us to the top, overnight, in poor visibility, in an electric storm in what is actually quite a challenging trek for anyone not used to it. At one point, he knelt down in his holed trainers and prayed for directions - attempting to blow away the fog. Not a soul around and he then admitted he'd never been up at night/fog and that most tourists turned around by now.

We couldn't see anything due to the cloud. This was in Feb 2013. Take a decent torch and waterproofs and expect a day of proper mountain trekking - not a jolly. Looking back, our near death experience with our "guide" was a great story to tell afterwards but a bit touch and go at the time!

“Very peaceful, active volcano”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

This volcano is in Yogyakarta in the middle of the island of Java, Indonesia. It is very beautiful with a great quiet ride to the top especially if you can take a motorbike instead of a car/bus. The people in the villages to the top are friendly however do not speak much English. I would highly recommend Merapi to anyone visiting Jogja.

“Merapi Sunrise Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

Start at 04.00 fom yogya, going to rental Jeep at Kinahrejo village. Start at 4.30, about 30 minutes open jeep journey in the dark, cold wind and guncangan began. Interesting, with driver that truly hospitable, always smiling and never stop explain. First destination was bunker that had drawn on sand when Merapi erupting. Lucky of us it’s moonlit so we walk with moonlight from jeep parking to bunker. With merapi silhoutte as our background, its really unforgettable moment.
After that, while waiting for sunrise, we drank ginger that include in jeep tour package. Our backgorund is mount Merapi that clear, no clouds, look vivid. That truly amazing scenery. On front of us, dark sand outspread and if you throw a stone, there will sound like very big empty space below our feet. Little bit scary for me, realized that I am so little in this huge nature. In some place sand still hot, after erupted many years ago. Distant Yogya seen small. Really, no many place like here.
Passed sunrise, journey starts again to Alien stone, ‘exhibition’ stuffs that melted because lava and to river that cold lava through.
Suggest : come early when sun will rise and if enable at moonlit. The scenery will clear, not so many visitors, so quietly and you can enjoy the beautiful nature with perfect. And don’t forget book jeep a day before because sunrise journey with reservation only

“Stunning Views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

Merapi Volcano tour is exist since the Erupted in 2010, many people come eager to know how great the erupted, and visit the "Mbah Maridjan" house (Merapi's spiritual guardian) who died when Merapi erupted.

This place is interesting, we could see how great the eruption of Merapi which is the most active volcano in Indonesia. We could enjoy mountain view and also fresh air. 4 years a go, hot clouds of volcanic gas and ash has destroyed house, people and plants, but now the plants are started to grow, green already. we could visit Mbah Maridjan's house, Opak river, small museum, bunker, and see many things that were destroyed by eruption. For those who want to drive off-road, there are Jeep and Trail motorcycle for rent. Also try some snacks such jadah tempe.

Don't forget to try Kopi Merapi in Petung Village, 10 minute from parking lot. Available with robusta and arabica coffee. while enjoying a cup of coffee for Rp. 5.000, we could enjoy the beautiful Merapi.
