“Top notch Italian restaurant in Jakarta”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

Il Mare is in top 5 restaurants in Jakarta. The service is consistently excellent, flavours are fragrant, and atmosphere is welcoming.

I have visited Il Mare at least five times last year - for business and in private, for lunch, brunch, and dinner. And I haven't been disappointed. Come in for Saturday lunch and you will get the restaurant for yourself - nice and quite. Come in for Sunday brunch and you will get buzz, business, and a terrific valued branch (c 50 USD inc. drinks). Come in for a business dinner and you get a big table in cul-de-sac and attentive service. Come in for a private dinner and you get a cosy booth.

A la cart expect to pay $100 per person inc. a glass of wine. Well worth it though. Wine list is not too bad, but quite often the wine you'd like is not in stock or only 1-2 bottles available.

“The King?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

If this restaurant were located in New York City there would be no review of it in the Times because it’s just classic Italian food done pretty good and that’s served at a million other places there. So how come a meal at Il Mare Jakarta costs as much as the 3-or-4-course prix fixe menus at Le Bernardin, Daniel and Colicchio and Sons? (Let’s not kid ourselves and think that maybe the food at Il Mare is comparable).

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty at Il Mare that's good. The problem is that the chef’s cooking takes a backseat to the cost of making it available. The panzanella starter ($16) was accompanied by some very nice shrimp, the rigatoni with smoked lamb ragout ($22) was light and had a wonderfully deep but subtle flavor, and the veal saltimbocca ($42) capped off this progression finely. Wines by the glass were split into ‘premium’ ($18/glass) and ‘regular’ ($13/glass) house wines, or you could go with bottles that start at around $55. Rounding off the evening my companion and I had an apple tart (though strictly speaking it was not a tart) and the tiramisu, both $7 and nicely done. With a couple bottles of water, a couple cups of coffee and a $3 fee for sharing the dishes our bill came to $180.

Currently Il Mare is deemed by the TripAdvisor community to be the #1 ranked restaurant in Jakarta. That raises a few obvious questions: is this really the best restaurant in the entire city, or is it simply one that actually does what all restaurants are supposed to do, which is to deliver good food? If it's the latter, then does it really deserve 5 stars and the #1 spot? Personally I think this restaurant is rated so highly merely because Jakarta diners have become jaded from getting so little in return for our money time and again at supposedly 'good' restaurants in Jakarta.

In a different review I attributed the insanity of restaurant prices in Jakarta to simple economics. But after thinking it over some more, it seems more appropriate to say that we are completely blind and Il Mare has become king, at least for now, by managing to keep one eye open.

“Outstanding meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

The food was outstanding - had a lobster that was perfectly cooked. The salads were excellent but the caprese was a little overpriced for the amount of food

“Beautiful meat and pasta”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2012

Beautiful meat and pasta.

Quite small and smokey compared to other Sunday brunch places. Probably not the best place to take kids.
