“Location the only reason anyone should stay here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2012

Stayed for the second time in December 2011 for two nights. The two-bedroom apartment booking was made via an internet booking site. No hassle.

Travelled will family of 5 (including myself). Since we don't have any maid, the maid-room mattress actually utilised for the fifth person. No need to ask for additional bed/mattress.

The complaints would be the breakfast and the bathroom/toilet. Breakfast is really really basic. Nothing to shout about. Sufficient as temporary before you go to have better breakfast at the adjacent shopping mall (Grand Indonesia in front, and Thamrin City behind the building). Also, if you are a fan of nasi padang, there is the famous Nasi Padang Sederhana across the road.

Bathroom - stinky! Something wrong with its sewerage I guess. No point to complaint since my previous stay couple of years back, I have complained and until now, still experiencing it. So I guess no action was taken.

As my review titl suggest, location is the only reason if you want to stay at Ascott Jakarta.

Room Tip: Get the higher floor.

This hotel is absolutely terrible and what makes it worse is that they have used airbrushed or fake photos on their website and misleading descriptions of the facilities to make it seem much better than what it really is. They also don't respect non-smokers and provide smoking rooms when a non-smoking room is booked. If I had known what this hotel was really like I would have gone elsewhere.

The hotel is in poor condition, it is also gloomy and mosquito infested. There is a washing machine in the room but infuriatingly the dryer doesn't work properly so you have to hang your clothes in the bathroom. There are a lot of little maintenance issues that do not get attended to like broken cupboards and lights.

The staff are friendly but useless. The maid service is very inconsistent and if you don't put the 'Do not disturb' sign on they will knock on your door at 8:30am. Sometimes they ask you if there is anything else you want them to do and then they mostly ignore the requests, probably because they didn't understand what you said.

The free buffet breakfast is terrible and not worth bothering with. All they provide is cereal, toast, fruit, eggs and some dodgy hot food. There is no restaurant or bar in this hotel but rooms do have stoves & fridges so you can cook your own food. There are 3 supermarkets nearby but the Thamrin City Hypermarket is hard to find and has limited western food while the 2 inside the Grand Indonesian mall have imported western food but are very expensive. You can buy beer in all the supermarkets though.

The "complimentary" wireless internet only works in the lobby and not in the room. The in-room broadband is supposed to be charged but if you complain about the lack of promised complimentary wireless they might waive this charge. Alternatively if you are on the front side of the hotel you might be able to access the unsecured free wireless from the Kempinski Hotel (which incidentally is a beautiful hotel with a very nice (& expensive) upmarket restaurant).

The gym & swimming are not as good as the pictures. The pool is quite small and the gym has old equipment. The treadmills shudder if you run on them and the trainers are not interested in putting equipment away or helping the guests.

The only good thing about this hotel is the location beside the Grand Indonesian mall which is a huge 8 level mall with many nice shops. But you have to risk your life crossing the road and there are many other much better hotels beside this mall (& other fancy malls...).

Room Tip: The Studio rooms are terrible. The one bedroom apartments are better. If you do get a Studio complai...

I stayed at Ascott for two months, and would definitely stay there again for a long-term visit. First, the positives:

The rooms are very spacious and have pretty much everything you need, except a coffeemaker. The kitchen is fully equipped, and the apartments are furnished, if dated. The bathrooms are gorgeous and really large.

The location can't be beat. It's next to two giant malls: Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia, which you can walk to for restaurants, shopping, groceries, movie theaters, and pretty much everything else you need. Though I love to cook, I barely used my kitchen at Ascott, because there were so many other convenient and good options next door. In Jakarta, most people will drive even just to cross a major road, so it's really a big deal to have a location that's easily walkable to two shopping centers.

The staff are very nice and will always know your name and room number and are eager to help. Although some were more competent than others in helping with whatever issues I had, all of them were really nice.

The gym was fine. Machines were very old, but they were great about maintaining them, and it was spotlessly clean.

For long term stays, the price is very cheap compared to a regular hotel, but still high compared to comparable apartments in the area.

But the negatives were also numerous:

The breakfast buffet was good in that it existed and was free, but the food was really bad. The hot foods section always had bizarre dinner foods like lasagna, Chinese stir-fry, and other really really non-breakfasty foods. Even the coffee was bad. Most days, I fixed my own breakfast in my room.

Housekeeping was really hit or miss. I take this to mean that they don't really train their housekeeping staff, and that it's up to the individual maid to determine how much they clean. They did a great job the first few weeks, but after that, they did a very lazy job and wouldn't even put my dishes away. Even when I was out of town for several days, they left the room a mess.

I had a dress pressed once because of a complicated pleat that I couldn't iron myself, and they completely ironed out the pleats, defeating the purpose of me paying for the dress to be pressed. However, when I complained to management, they did have it fixed at no cost, and the laundry services are cheap compared to other hotels.

I liked that they had a washer in the room for laundry, but it was by far the worst I've ever used in my life. The manual provided was for a different type, and had I not found the Electrolux manual online on a Malaysian website, I would never have figured out how to use that thing. It's not intuitive at all, and even when used properly, it does a terrible job and will not dry your clothes no matter what. For some reason, the machine sprays more water on your clothes and heats them when you want to dry them, which results in hot clothes that are wetter than they started out. Don't waste your time; just use the machine to wash and then hang your clothes up in the bathroom.

The shower was broken when I got there, but I was able to fix the problem myself. Once fixed, the water pressure was still a bit low, but the temperature was fine. The amenities include mini shampoos, soap, etc., which are of high quality, but as others have mentioned, you only get those things once! They don't replenish them at all, so if you're staying for more than a few days, you'll have to bring your own or buy them.

The lights throughout the apartment are very very yellow and have a cheap feel to them, which makes for a pretty dreary existence when the sun goes down. Also, the bedroom only has a small window about two feet wide, so it felt really dark and cramped in there.

Despite all my complaints, the positives are major ones, and the Ascott did feel like home after a few weeks. I would definitely stay again for a long visit.

The location is the best thing that the Ascott has going for it, being within two minutes walk of an entrance to Grand Indonesia. Staff were friendly but the rooms are a little dated and despite being marketed as a hotel when I asked for a change of bed linen was advised that this only occurs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Couple of glitches with the room, including a mouldy shower curtain which was only replaced after 3 requests. The restaurant for breakfast was pleasant and standard of food reasonable for breakfast given that this is a serviced apartment. On balance good value and would stay there again but could be a lot better with some more focus

The rooms space were generous. There is also a maids' room if you intend to bring your maid. Its shopper's paradise and food lover's paradise. Conveniently located. You can go shopping without worries. Security is tight. The service was excellent. Definitely coming back next year. Theres children playground and swimming pool. But its pretty small.

Always been a fan of Ascott while traveling with family and The Ascott Jakarta is probably my worst Ascott experience. But if u come here with low expectation instead of your usual Ascott experience, you'll probably enjoy ur stay more. Check in was easy but as the check in staff did not read my check in voucher properly, I was almost charged a more expensive rate than the website quotation. The 2 bedroom apartment is huge and but furnishing is a little dated and old. There's 2 toilet and 2 in room bath. But was only given 1 towel upon check in? Don't they know it's a 2 bedroom unit? Not bathmat is given, only 1 tooth brush per room. I gotta say the housekeeping is really very poor. And the shower doesn't work properly and makes alot of noise. Requested for extra bed, but it came with a mattress protector as a quilt!! Maybe they ran out of duvet or the housekeeping doesn't know what a duvet is.

Breakfast is sufficient but forgettable. Limited variety and food is low in quality. Do not have expectations on other hotels. Pool is small and uninviting with all the spoilt suntanning deck. Some even have birds pooh on it. All dried up. I've got 3 single bed in total, all 3 different mattress softness (age). 1 even without mattress pad! (probably ended on my extra bed as duvet.) The kithchen have everything u need. But u'll have no where to plug ur water kettle or toaster. Socket on wall is 2 pin. Electrical appliances are 3 pin. We gotta boil our water in our room.

But all that was expected as I've read others travelers review before I book the hotel. So I'm not too affected by all the negative point. But this is Indonesia. Quality only comes in Ritz Carlton, Hilton, Four Seasons, Shangri-la or Oriental. The good point, strong aircond, strong water pressure in room, L'occitaine toiletries and of cos, SUPERB LOCATION. Smack right in between Grand Indonesia and Thamrin City. It is even a slow 20mins walk to Tanah Abang or less than 10k ride away. So I save myself from lotsa traffic jam. Late at nights, lots of food stalls sprout out at the roundabout between grand indo and plaza indo. Most food are delicious and super cheap. I had 10sate, 2 fried noodles, 1 fried rice, 2 bakso, 1 soto, serves good as supper for 5 and cost me 50k only. Overall, I paid for location and convenience. Not for a quality stay or services. Ascott is charging 5 star, but in fact, it is worth only 3.5 star.

Stayed over the weekend with 3 other ladies. Great location as others said, all friendly staff. Really spacious for a two room apartment with full serviced baths and showers in each room. Plus another 2 extra WCs. Value for money. Only complaint was the room smelled of the previous tenants who must have used scents which we are not used to. Also shower taps need to be replaced soon. And the breakfast is quite basic for a 4star.
