What I really like about Ancol is that the Indonesian cultures are well maintained throughout the whole area and facilities. From the choice of names for each facilities to the style of decorations represent the culture of Indonesia. However I'm a bit disappointed the new mall that is being built at the far end of the eastern beach, which is not eco friendly, considering the progressive sea abration that kept cutting the Ancol coast line.
Ancol has a wide variety of amusement theme, at which the Dunia Fantasi, the Sea World, and Atlantis waterpark are the highlights of Ancol.
There is also a good restaurant called Bandar Jakarta, which is a must try on a visit to Ancol. The Segara resto at the eastern beach is also an interesting place to visit, especially for romantic occasion. Prices are higher though but worth the visit.
The public beach is a disappointment, because the beach is not properly maintained and full of litters along the shore.
Staying on the hotels in Ancol are not recommended. I've stayed in two hotels in Ancol, and really bothered with yellowish color of the water. Better stay in the surrounding hotels outside Ancol.
