“So much to rave about”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

There are a lot of terrific things to say about this hotel. First among them is the staff who are uniformly polite and helpful. Within hours of checking in I was being greeted by name by people I’d never seen before.

My standard room was almost a suite with a large bathroom, separate lavatory and massive sitting/bedroom. All conceivable amenities are provided and replenished daily. The shower is excellent, bed comfortable and aircon silent and effective. The lighting is quite dark unfortunately which makes working or reading at night difficult.

The restaurants in the hotel are all pleasant but if you are stuck there for a while the options get a bit samey. As you are in one of the busier and wealthier parts of the city getting to other hotels, shopping centers or standalone places is quite easy and taxis are cheap. Walking is not recommended in this area unless you are fond of high-risk jaywalking.

The gym is very good and underutilised even when the hotel seemed quite full. The pool is shallow and warm. Cooling off is easier in the chilly aircon indoors. The biggest criticism I can offer to an otherwise excellent hospitality experience is the presence of pushy prostitutes in the first floor hotel bar.

For around US$200 per night though in a third-world country this is really a terrific bargain.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the lifts face the fountain, which is the best view available

My views echo that of others who have rated this hotel similarly. I travel a lot for work, and this is my first time staying here in Jakarta, and it is disappointing for the price of the hotel room. I shall sum up this review in point form below.

Pros:
1) Service by staff is good, and as expected when you are in Jakarta in a 5-star establishment.
2) Food ordered through Room Service and in Lyon, the French Restaurant was very good. The pasta portion in Room Service was huge, good for 2 persons actually.
3) Central location allows easy access to the big malls just opposite.
4) Room was big and cosy.

Cons:
1) There was no overhead bridge linking the hotel to Grand Indonesia opposite. There are 2 bridges both 200m away from the hotel. So the fastest way to get across to the mall is to jaywalk which I did.
2) The hotel swimming pool is very small, no use for any lap swimming at all. I was frustrated with this, considering this is a 5-star hotel.
3) Noisy actually. I could hear the TV blasting from adjacent rooms, totally unheard of in 5-star hotels elsewhere. And although I was on the 19th floor, the central location meant there was also traffic noise during the peak hours.
4) Small hotel lobby. I know this is unfair to list it down, but it does not give the feel of a high-classed hotel in this sense, and there was not many seats to go around if you have to wait for someone in the lobby.
5) Paying for internet!!! Yes, I'm no member of the MO group, but having to pay USD250++ per night and then topping up for internet after that, this is a rude shock.
6) The rates fluctuate every night that I stayed for the 4 nights? Why so? Due to the USD exchange rate? Then it should be charged in IDR in the first place, and this will make my claim from company much easier.
7) No water dispenser in the gym at all. Totally uncool. This is so environmentally unfriendly. The counter staff at the gym had to top up my bottle in their office.
8) Room was not well-lit enough for reading at night, and there was no bedside LED light. I don't expect this at all from a newly renovated hotel.
9) Pillows were too soft, and totally sank in when you lie your head down. Commonly, there are always 2 types of pillows, the hard and the soft. But there's only one type here.

Things that could be improved:
1) Toiletries set could be swapped for a bigger volume per bottle, and something that allows for the liquid to flow easier.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

We just checked out this morning from Mandarin Oriental Jakarta after spending two nights. I can't recall enjoying a hotel more - and my wife and I travel a lot. The extremely positive experience began after reservation - a couple of days before we were coming, the reservations officer e-mailed to ask if we wanted a private transportation to the hotel and we said yes, choosing the mid-priced limo. But when we got to Soekarno-Hatta from Kuala Namu, we were pleasantly surprised to see that we were upgraded to the Mercedes Benz. The hotel is in the smack-dab center of the Central Jakarta-CBD-Golden Triangle along Sudirman-Thamrin-Barat, the most important north-south road cutting through the city. Most people will consider the rotonda as the true center, fronted by the Mandarin, Kempinski, and Grand Hyatt (former Hotel Indonesia). Two very large malls are just across the street.

The day before we arrived, I had also e-mailed that I wanted a city tour and could they arrange. When we arrived, they already had a brochure ready with the city tour options and all I had to do was choose.

The hotel lobby is spacious. Since we were booked at a deluxe room with club benefits, we were led directly to our room for the check-in procedure, always a nice touch. But they surprised us by upgrading us to a junior suite at no extra cost. The room was - nothing short of fantastic, on the 25th floor. And great touches were everywhere - master light switches in every room, two wall LCD TVs, tub in the center of the bathroom, lots of bath towels, high-class toiletries, walk in wardrobe closet, two-bowl bath sinks, complimentary water bottles everywhere, heavy soundproof sliding doors, front door, and walls, complimentary fruit bowls that they kept refilling, genuine tea set, plush pillows and comforter, and so important to travelers everywhere, electric sockets in a lot of places. When you opened the TV sets, they'd default to channel 1 which showed a 5 minute Mandarin Oriental video showing dreamlike sometime eerie clips and a haunting soundtrack - certainly hard to ignore.

The Exec Lounge was large, with lots of tables, good wide-variety food three times a day, with decent Australian wine. One night, for soup, they had minestrone and the next, tom yum. Of course, the usual selection of sushi-sashimi, cheeses, fruits, international desserts, fried rice, fishes, satays, etc.

The complimentary breakfast was at their coffee shop Cinammon, a pleasant affair that never seemed crowded even if all the tables were full. Variety was very good, even by 5-star hotel standards.

We got to try the fitness floor. I was very impressed with the gym facility. They had top-of-the-line Technogym equipment and they had a wide variety of equipment. They also had a separate flexibility room with mirrors all around that I guess could also be used by guests wanting to practice ballet or ballroom dancing. It also had a unique Technogym station I had never seen before but appreciated trying out. All their equipment - swiss balls, mats - seemed very new. The only criticism I might level is that the weights started from 14k and over - my Fitness First gym at home would start from 6k. They had water and towels. They even had programs and my wife attended the aquaerobics class from 5 to 6 pm. They had 5 high-speed elevators so there was never any waiting.

But what my wife insisted that I point out in this review was the exceptional quality of service and the high level of English skills of all staff. From doormen, to front desk, to coffee shop to fitness room, we were so impressed with the level of English skill. Nice work! But I'm guessing the other 5-star hotels might be almost there as well. What I'm sure they haven't reached yet is the quality of service. Everyone smiles, everyone is polite, everyone is very attentive. At the coffee shop, the waitresses are always so quick to help and serve. I would order eggs and the cook would promise to bring the eggs to my table, in good english. Even the waitresses who pick up the dishes are well-trained. At the Exec Lounge, the two staff who run the place are even more impressive. First, they know all the VIP guests' names. They always ask if they can get you anything, and especially helpful with the wines. The staff at the fitness center and pool were also very service-oriented, looking out for everyone who came in, to check if they needed help with any of the equipment, handing out towels, water, fruits. And they were always smiling and genuinely demonstrating their eagerness to please. Ditto with the front desk. Even as we were leaving, the doorman handed me a slip with info on the limo just in case I had any problems or complaints. That's anticipation.

What a lovely experience we had. Hotels like Mandarin Oriental Jakarta are the best ambassadors for the city and the country. It's number one ranking is truly deserved.

Room Tip: Pay the extra to get club benefits. It's a very good deal.

Just arrived today and it is a beautiful hotel, the staff are very attentive, plenty of security people keeping any unwanted people out. It is a 5 Star and it lives up to the standard. Outdoor and sauna are very good, room service food excellent and the prices aren't high. As someone else has mentioned the WiFi isn't free, this is the only let down.

Room Tip: Mine is 2408 which is a standard but is very spacious and quality furnishings, and an excellent view...

been visiting MO jakarta for about a year now and its getting harder to find faults...agree with prior comments about the ceiling being low, but the decor, room size and value for rupiah make up for it. they have a nifty free shuttle service (i.e. Silverbird cab) to the nearby malls/offices which is a nice touch...some recommendations would be the gym is lovely but dead quiet (time to turn up the bang & olufsen system) and appreciate giving the frequent travelers some thank yous (once in a while room upgrade for continued patronage etc)
not much of a pool to speak of, you're better off at the mulia or shang for a swim.
fabulous breakfast spread is sure to give you food coma for your day ahead...

Room Tip: ask for a corner room.

stayed 1 evening at the mandarin oriental in jakarta. very impressed with the decor, cleanliness, and overall facility. this place definitely is what i expected a 5 star hotel to look like. in addition, the staff were very pleasant, professional, and helpful.

the only slight negative was wifi is not included with the room. come on.....really? at a 5 star hotel where i shell out premium money to stay here and you want to charge me extra for wifi...tacky! previous to our stay at the mandarin oriental, we stayed at the four seasons hotel and wifi was complimentary. for this reason, i would take the four seasons over mandarin oriental. however, good hotel and would recommend this to others.

Stayed in Mandarin Oriental Jakarta on a business trip. Excellent value, centrally located in the CBD, very close to shopping malls. Room is excellent and the breakfast is great. High tea and evening cocktails are excellent too.
